Ram Review: Ten different Cornell wrestlers won matches as the No. 16 Rams captured two of three at the Northwestern Duals on Nov. 12 in Evanston, Ill. Led by junior Chris Heilman (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s), who was 3-0 at 125 pounds, Cornell defeated the University of Chicago 20-15 and Cumberland (Tenn.) 33-15 before falling to Division II University of Indianapolis 23-18. “We wrestled a lot of different people and some of our younger guys competed very well,” Cornell Coach Mike Duroe said. “We competed well for our first competition of the year. This gives us a starting point.”
Sophomore Aaron Bingham (Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan) was 2-0 at 141. Two other Rams — freshman Nick Nothern (Salina, Kan./Salina) at 133 and sophomore Kyle Kehrli (Winthrop/East Buchanan) at 174 — were 2-1.
“Nothern definitely had the best performance of the weekend,” Duroe said.
The Rams won four bouts against Indianapolis, which is rated No. 7 in NCAA Division II. Cornell led 18-17 heading into the final match of the dual.
“To win against an NAIA school like Cumberland and then to be ahead of Indianapolis after nine matches was very encouraging,” Duroe said. “We made a lot of basic technical errors that put us in compromising positions.”

3rd news release-Ram Review: No. 16 Cornell crowned two champions and had nine placewinners at the Turkey Open on Nov. 18 hosted by Coe at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids. Winning titles for the Rams were junior Chris Heilman (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s) at 125 pounds and sophomore Aron Kindelsperger (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) at 149. For the season, Heilman improved to 7-0 and Kindelsperger is 5-1.
“I was pleased with the fact that we had 15 guys compete and nine were placewinners,” Cornell Coach Mike Duroe said. “We received a good individual performance from Heilman, and Kindelsperger won a pretty tough weight class.”
Other placewinners for the Rams were junior Pat McAuley (Austin, Texas/Lanier), who was runner-up at 157; freshman Nick Nothern (Salina, Kan./Salina), third at 133; sophomore David Boussios (Hillsboro, Ore./Century), fourth at 141; freshman Alex Riniker (Winthrop/East Buchanan), fourth at 149; sophomore Drew Vickers (Coal City, Ill./Coal City), fifth at 165; sophomore Andrew Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s), fifth at 184; and sophomore Aaron Bingham (Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan), sixth at 141. The Rams won 30 of 55 bouts at the Turkey Open and had 82 near-fall points to 51 by their opponents.
“This was a good, competitive event,” Duroe said. “It gave a lot of our athletes a chance to compete and see where they are on an individual basis. We found out that we still need to get a better.”
Cornell improved to 3-1 in duals (1-0 in the Iowa Conference) with a 23-15 win at the University of Dubuque on Nov. 15. Heilman, Nothern, McAuley, Smith and sophomores Christian Coffey (Houston, Texas/Westside) and Kyle Kehrli (Winthrop/East Buchanan) were all winners. McAuley won by fall and Heilman by technical fall.
“I thought our guys competed really well,” Duroe said. “The close wins by Nothern, Coffey and Smith were pivotal matches and allowed us to win.”

Ram Review: No. 16 Cornell (5-2 overall) turned in one of its most dominant performances in years with a 41-9 thumping of Augustana on Dec. 14 in Rock Island, Ill. The Rams won five of 10 matches by fall and another by technical fall. They had the first takedown in 9 of 10 bouts and held huge advantages in nearfall points (48-5) and total match points (95-34).
“Our guys got themselves ready to compete and we were very aggressive on our feet,” Cornell Coach Mike Duroe said. “Sometimes when you go on the road your focus is better. We didn’t have any distractions and I was pleased with our performance.”
The win snapped a seven-match losing streak to the Vikings. Winning by fall for the Rams were juniors Chris Heilman (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s) at 125 pounds and Pat McAuley (Austin, Texas/Lanier) at 157, sophomore David Boussios (Hillsboro, Ore./Century) at 141, and freshmen Nick Nothern (Salina, Kan./Salina South) at 133 and Jason Edlund (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) at 285. Sophomore Aron Kindelsperger (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) won by technical fall at 149.
“Our aggressiveness resulted in a lot of first takedowns, nearfall points and falls,” Duroe said.
The Rams bolted to an 11-3 lead after three bouts, but couldn’t keep the momentum going during a 25-14 loss to No. 9 North Central on Dec. 16 in Mount Vernon. Heilman opened the dual with a fall in 2-minutes, 13-seconds. Nothern trailed 4-2 after the first period before hustling back and nearly knocking off No. 2 Adam Johnson at 133. A riding time point gave Johnson a 6-5 victory. At 141, Boussios destroyed North Central’s Ed Domich with a 17-2 technical fall in 6:19. Boussios compiled 12 nearfall points.
North Central scored the next 22 points before Edlund stopped the skid with a 7-2 win at 285 pounds over the Cardinals’ Jim Looper.
“We let an opportunity to beat a top 10 team in front of our home crowd slip away, and that was disappointing,” Duroe said. “We’re still learning to step it up when things get tough in a match. We’re still improving our mental toughness.”
