3rd news release-Ram Review: No. 16 Cornell crowned two champions and had nine placewinners at the Turkey Open on Nov. 18 hosted by Coe at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids. Winning titles for the Rams were junior Chris Heilman (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s) at 125 pounds and sophomore Aron Kindelsperger (Port Byron, Ill./Riverdale) at 149. For the season, Heilman improved to 7-0 and Kindelsperger is 5-1.

“I was pleased with the fact that we had 15 guys compete and nine were placewinners,” Cornell Coach Mike Duroe said. “We received a good individual performance from Heilman, and Kindelsperger won a pretty tough weight class.”

Other placewinners for the Rams were junior Pat McAuley (Austin, Texas/Lanier), who was runner-up at 157; freshman Nick Nothern (Salina, Kan./Salina), third at 133; sophomore David Boussios (Hillsboro, Ore./Century), fourth at 141; freshman Alex Riniker (Winthrop/East Buchanan), fourth at 149; sophomore Drew Vickers (Coal City, Ill./Coal City), fifth at 165; sophomore Andrew Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./St. Mary’s), fifth at 184; and sophomore Aaron Bingham (Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan), sixth at 141.
The Rams won 30 of 55 bouts at the Turkey Open and had 82 near-fall points to 51 by their opponents.

“This was a good, competitive event,” Duroe said. “It gave a lot of our athletes a chance to compete and see where they are on an individual basis. We found out that we still need to get a better.”

Cornell improved to 3-1 in duals (1-0 in the Iowa Conference) with a 23-15 win at the University of Dubuque on Nov. 15. Heilman, Nothern, McAuley, Smith and sophomores Christian Coffey (Houston, Texas/Westside) and Kyle Kehrli (Winthrop/East Buchanan) were all winners. McAuley won by fall and Heilman by technical fall.

“I thought our guys competed really well,” Duroe said. “The close wins by Nothern, Coffey and Smith were pivotal matches and allowed us to win.”
