You have a lot in your post and I would just like to address one thing now the freestyle issue which is something Donnie also mentions.
When do you think is the best age for a kid to start freestyle? Last year we tried to start my son with East Kansas as a 6th grader. He decided not to pursue it last year after two weeks and to concentrate on track & field instead. Last year he was a little burned out after the State tournament and he was not comfortable that it was mainly high schoolers participating at his size. So now he will be facing the same decision soon. Is it too early for him to start this as a 7th grader and what do you think is the ideal age to start freestyle?
