In the fnals at Liberal, I thought that it was obvious that Cook and Shields came out of the same room last year and knew each other well. I thought that both were pretty cautious and never really opened up. I could be wrong, but that was my impression.
I think that the OW could come out of 215, but how many times do you hear the announcer asking for ballots well before the bigger guys step on the mat? If everyone shows up, it is a loaded weight class. The only real stud missing from western Kansas is Bach from Liberal. He would be the favorite.

Shields did not wrestle in the Colby/Goodland dual last night. They said he wasn't wrestling at Hays this weekend. He has an injury of some kind.

Good tournament. I've seen years that it's been a lot tougher but there were some quality kids. Really liked what Jace Campbell of Oakley did to Zach Ceman of Pburg at 112. Zahorsky of Pburg won an ot decision over Jay Sanders of Hays at 25. Hudgines at 152 looked great against an unbeaten Gienger. Malay of Trego is cat quick and could be poised for an unbeaten season. 215 was my favorite match - two bulls going at it in Whitehill of McPherson and Racette of Oakley with Whitehill winning a narrow decision. Goodland easily won the team title without the Shields kid. They wrestled well!

Racette vs. Whitehill was one hell of a match! Racette almost got a reverse at the end and it ended up close. Congrats to Whitehill for gettin OW at such a tough tourney!

I think they could have either had an extra mat on Friday or started the tournament earlier....we wrapped up on Friday night at 11:30. That is a little ridiculous!!! Just my opinion....everything else seemed to go quite well and there was some excellent matches to watch.

Seemed like a lot of INJ Defaults on the brackets. What is the deal with these kids. Did teams leave early or did that many kids get hurt. I noticed some really notable kids defaulted out like some Oakley kids and Landeros from Ulysses and Juby from Buhler. I hope these kids are ok?? Anyone know??

As far as the Oakley boys, we had 2 default out to 6th place. Steve Samuelson (119)was battling kidney stones and went as far as he could. Caleb Baalman (135) was returned to the mat hard (but very legally) in in cons. semi-final match. He had had a back injury in the last football game of the year and he reaggravated it. He had already beaten the guy he was going to have for fifth and we didn't see a point in taking a chance with his health with league, regionals, and state on the horizon. Both should be back in the near future and we look for good things from them.

Steve Samuelson (119)was battling kidney stones . If that kid was wrestling with kidney stones, then he is now the toughest individual I have ever known. Kudos to him for gutting one out for the team. I have had those before and they made me weep like a little child.

Landeros was injured against Whitehill in the semi finals. It is most likely season ending. He is getting a MRI today.

Wrestled with kidney stones? All I could do was curl up in the corner and wait for the morphine to kick in.
