I never wrestled as a kid, only High school level. My concern is my kid is a first year wrestler and wants to go and wrestle all he can. That being said he has not been all that successful this season he's won 3 matches and a couple of medals. I usually see him in the C brackets at opens etc... So I can only assume his age/weight will have only one bracket at sub district, Is this correct? If so are the #1 seeds going to wrestle the worst or lowest seeds round one? This kind of has me concerned as I want him to get out and wrestle as much as he wants too but I don't want him to get annihilated by some state placer in round one and go out for a whole off season down on himself about how the year ended.

There is a seeding meeting where all the coaches throw the names and records around to gain the seeds. I have heard arguements in the meeting from so and so beat this guy, but this guy beat this guy head to head and so on. People who follow the results thru the year know who the better wrestlers are and it all just falls into place. I believe after the top 4 or 8 it just fills in randomly, not sure though.
I assumed something like that happened which is fine. But say its a 16 man bracket does the 16 get paired with the #1 15 with #2 etc ? I will probably bring him anyway and wouldn't allow his record or letter rating to inflated to bump him up. I'm kinda more just wondering what to expect and hope he can see what level he will have to wrestle at in the future if he wants to get to the top.

I have been to many (8 or 10) sub district seeding meetings. Yes usually 16 vs 1, 15 vs 2, and so on. If you're concerned, you should probably wait until next year. Your gut instinct is usually right.
Most if not all sub-districts will seed all the kids in case of scratches. You are correct, in a 16 man bracket 16 vs 1.

Good luck as we get prepared for the post season!

The kids get seede based on records, state qualifier, state placer, state champ, etc., They generally only seed out 4 to 8 places and then draw in the other kids.

Example:

1 seed) Tim 25-0 2 time state champ
2 seed )Tom 23-2 2 time state placer
3 seed )Jim 23-6 State Qualifier
4 seed ) Joe 20-8 State Qualifier
drawn in) Bill 18-19
drawn in) Sam 18-19
drawn in) Pete 18-19
drawn in) Ralph 18-19

This could be different seeding if Jim gave Tom his 2 losses on the year. Anyway, everybody has a list of all the kids and their records going into the meeting. I hope this helps

District 1 only seeds the 1/2 of the wrestlers. The remaining competitors and byes are put in randomly. District 3, I believe, seeds all of the wrestlers who enter subs. Not sure about 4 and 2.
I would be in Distric 2

Cokeley,
Would a State placer in another state from last year that moved to Kansas this year have any merit to the seeding process??

Hopefully that state placer would have wrestled in KS this year to give him some seeded criteria locally. That would be the first question asked is "Ok great for placing in XX last year, where has he wrestled this year". If this wrestler has a similiar record this year with similiar levels of competition to another and no common opponents he would probably get the nod for whatever seed was being discussed.

24/7,
Thanks...He's a freshman and been wrestling varsity all year..We start kids meets this weekend & next before districs..He still is in that 14 & under age bracket so we wouldn't have much "common opponents" due to he's been wrestling mostly soph, juniors & seniors..I would think that would be a factor vs. a 8th grader but maybe not..??..

Freshman will normally get the nod over 8th graders especially if it's varsity records.

District 4 South usually only seeds top 6-8 kids and draws the rest in. One thing for the 6U kids who are trying to qualify at 8U, 8U records take precedent over 8U. For the 14U High School Records will be looked at first then Kids Club records and then Middle Shool Records.

Did the freshman qualify for state this year in HS? If he placed at Kids state last year he gets seeding points.
smokeycabin,

Joe is our kid and he was the one who beat Jim 3 out of 4 times this year! Please give us the #3 seed intead, and give #4 to Jim!

We know there will always be arguments!!! :-)

With all due respect to Joe, Jim won the last head to head meeting so he gets the #3 seed. \:\)
Cokeley,

You are wrong!

Joe was sick on that day and went ahead and wrestled because we drove all the way there...

.... so we still beat him 3 out of 4 times.

We still want the 3!!

Jeff :-)

The last of a series of matches between 2 kids will carry the most weight at the seeding meeting.

My son wrestles in a heavier weight bracket and it is usually combined with heavy weights. He usually still does very well! He took 2nd at Salina only loosing to a bigger kid (almost 20lbs). When its only our weight class we almost always take first. BUT, there are some novice kids out there that have the same if not slightly better records then us but they have been sticking to the novice tournements or smaller opens. How will that play out at a seeding. Is there consideration for level of competition?
Novice Records are not factored in. - Open Records Only.

Broadbent,

Joe is soft! He needs to quit drinking soda pop and move down a weight class!
