Patrick, bring your grill and i'll bring some burgers and dogs. Who can bring the chips, pop, buns and we'll not have to spend the money for the outrageous prices at the expo center. Everybody bring something.
Posted By: badbo Re: tailgate at state? - 03/10/09 01:15 PM
Jerry,

Do you have any teriaki chicken sandwiches....If so Bo wants a rematch from Indy.
Posted By: Cokeley Re: tailgate at state? - 03/10/09 01:19 PM
I think Humphrey should bring up some of his secret recipe burgers from Fredonia! If I am in Wisconsin that week I will bring some genuine brats and polish sausages. Smokey! Can you smell the aroma of charcol and mesquite now?
Posted By: J. Dale Re: tailgate at state? - 03/10/09 01:21 PM
Bo will never defeat the chicken sandwich king. i think the count was 20 something.
Posted By: PatrickCavanaugh Re: tailgate at state? - 03/10/09 01:25 PM
I'll bring whatever you want if that will sway your votes this fall to keep State in Topeka. It's a whopping 3 miles from my house!
Posted By: J. Dale Re: tailgate at state? - 03/10/09 01:27 PM
ok patrick you're out. it's not worth that vote. i'd vote for bush before voting to keep it in topeka.

Spoken like a true liberal. Your loss, I've got a killer Texmex brat recipe.

Patrick, I'm in on some PRO Topeka tail gaten! I'll load up the grill.
Posted By: doug747 Re: tailgate at state? - 03/10/09 02:58 PM
I think Bo was cheating. I think I saw a dozen half eaten chicken sandwiches in the trash cans...........

Still, you have to give Jerry credit, he ate all of his while on that appetite suppressant called NICOTINE...........

Easy there tiger, your hijacking your own thread. I will say in my defense, that you are right (doesn't happen often)about the MEX. But during a 4 year stint in Texas, I did meet a few senorita's that passed down recipes from there fathers & fathers before them. But you don't worry Mr. Dale, Only card carrying conservatives will be invited to sample this unique, exquisit quisine. You, should stick with what you know Teriaki Head!

Patrick, if you want to get rid of your nemesis Jerry, you could lure him into Andale, we still hang liberals out there. Just like Toby and Willie say about those crooked SOBs out there............

Well a man come on the 6 o’clock news
Said somebody’s been shot, somebody’s been abused
Somebody blew up a building
Somebody stole a car
Somebody got away
Somebody didn’t get too far yeah
They didn’t get too far

Grandpappy told my pappy, back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the street for all the people to see that

Justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we’ll sing a victory tune
We’ll all meet back at the local saloon
We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

We got too many gangsters doing dirty deeds
We’ve got too much corruption, too much crime in the streets
It’s time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground
Send ’em all to their maker and he’ll settle ’em down
You can bet he’ll set ’em down ’cause

Justice is the one thing you should always find
You got to saddle up your boys
You got to draw a hard line
When the gun smoke settles we’ll sing a victory tune
We’ll all meet back at the local saloon
We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces
Singing whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

Beeson, quick question for you. Do they play dueling banjos during the parade of champions down in your neck of the woods?

OK - I'll set up a table and volunteer my time as a judge for all you famous BBQers. All samples will be due at the start of weigh-ins Friday night. Just let me know the best location to set up. I may need a few more volunteers to help sample. Consider this thread the OFFICIAL signup sheet for BBQSJ. You can send samples early - just PM me and I'll get you a mailing address.

No...The Champion is the only one that gets to wear his sweats. All the losers wear singlets. As they walk by we shoot the ones in singlets with paintball guns. Your not allowed to shoot the guy in the sweats. The sweats are there just in case of a run away paintball. If this sounds cruel, you should have been there in the days before paintball guns....we just threw rocks.

In all fairness to Jerry Dale he has TRIED to kick the habit several times. I have known him for about four years and I think he has attempted to cease firing up the cancer sticks 27 times! It usually lasts about a week. He claims job stress but we all know it is Wrestling Referee stress that pushes Jerry to spark up another and another and another...I think he chews nicotine gum inside, smokes outside, and wears the patch 7x24!

Patrick, what you spend on food, you will be able to afford the trip to Wichita, or wherever else the tournament would be held.

Jerry, Bush isn’t running for president, he got beat, your choice now is Obama or someone else. Personally, I don’t think any of them are worth the price of a hot dog and a bottle of water at the Expo.

Chad, you’re something else you know that. Of course you can Bring your own bologna (to BBQ( and you can chew as long as you are outside, the Expo is not a school facility. Now inside while coaching, it all depends.

Michael, speaking of paint, last week at HS state there was a sign on the door at the Bicentennial Center that Face Painting Not Allowed. Go figure on that one. Don’t know about the Expo though, so just in case, the invisible face painting may be recommended. For a few of those out there, hopefully it causes the face to become invisible as well, count me in on that one.

Actually Owlbacker, we can all be grateful that we are a little west and north of Arkansas, there, the wife is from the same gene pool.

If walking across the street, make sure the crosswalk signs are working. That intersection can get busy.

Thankfully Josh, by the time the BBQ starts, the weigh ins will be over and the wrestlers can participate. Of course I recommend chicken and the beef frys prior to eating anything too greasy.

Actually a great idea Will, in fact if someone brings up the frys (connoisseur term instead of nuts) this would be worth the trip in and of itself, just make sure someone has the hot sauce.

Quick trivia question here, anyone know the name of the real author of that Southern Classic Dueling Banjos? Hint, he played on my former bands first album years ago. The story behind that song made him a millionaire.

Now there is another idea that would get me there and could become a tradition, an annual BBQ contest, of course as long as I attend, assuming I do and with the Beef Frys and now the BBQ contest the odds are shooting up to around 90%, I will assure you, there is only one name to print on that trophy, it is spelled FURCHES. Yep as a real southern boy, I am honored by the comments and awards my BBQ has won. I personally challenge, Sir Richard Salyer and Sporto02 to a BBQ challenge. Loser has to walk around the expo center in a singlet. And btw I do have a Red Team Kansas Wizzers singlet that would fit any one of us.

Back to Jerry and Will again, I for one can verify what Jerry is like when he disagrees with an official. I am honored though, I can still call him friend, other than when he is coaching and I am an official, then it is a “OH My Gosh” moment as an official, “Him again.”

Ricky,

If you want to go fast hit the nearest McDonalds with one of those spiral slides. Grab a serving tray and you will set a new land speed record. That is if your backside isn't too big for the tray or if you are just too big for the tube!

I learned this trick from the Hood boys.
Posted By: HEADUP Re: tailgate at state? - 03/12/09 12:46 AM
no sledding for me ricky, ever since they switched that plate in my head, nothing between my brain and the pavement but a piece of government plastic. the scar would show up too much on my bald head. i'll tell you what i'll go get dicky pallucca out of retirement and bring you all some of his famous italian sausage, and i'll whip up some of my country style rib sandwiches. however i have one request, it won't be a trip to topeka unless i get some of that stale popcorn from the hospitality room.

yesterday was my anniversary, and i got a little teary eyed. my wife said " hey what's wrong?"

i said remember before we got married and your dad said "if you don't marry my daughter, i'll have you locked up for 15 years>"?

she said "yeah why?"

i said " i would have been a free man today!!!"

Greg,

My dad and I went fishing a lot when I was a kid. When things got a little slow, we started to go after the bull frogs. They were easy pickins when you dropped the rubber worm or popper in front of them. Frog legs ... taste like chicken.

We moved from Belleville (Buffaloes) to Pratt (Greenbacks) in 1980 and I was hoping the mascot was a dollar bill. Instead, it was a Fighting Frog. I am glad that I had the chance to be a part of the frog tradition. With respect to my upbringing though, I think we should have some Buffalo wings as well.
Posted By: Pelland Re: tailgate at state? - 03/12/09 02:51 AM
Nothin funner than throwing a plastic worm 10' past a big Bull Frog sticking his head out of the moss and draggin it by him. Heck...throwing one 5' in front of them is fun too. They will pounce on it like a big ole Bass hitting a jitterbug.

When my dad was young (mid 20's), they would take a 2x4 and a window screen and make a giant fly swatter. What a muddy mess....
Posted By: ReDPloyd Re: tailgate at state? - 03/12/09 09:53 AM
Those were the good old days Greg. I have never been hand fishing for catfish, but I have heard many stories of people who did. Something about sticking my arm down the throat of a 40-50 pound fish with sandpaper lips just didn't appeal to me. It has been a number of years since I've had catfish on the grill, but I remember it being pretty tasty. Might have to bring some to the tailgate at State.

On a different note, my newest avatar is my youngest son Bryce. The U2/25 pounder is sure lot of fun. He was 3 1/2 months old when I deployed in '07 and I was fortunate enough to watch him grow up via the web cam. Isn't technology great?
Posted By: J. Dale Re: tailgate at state? - 03/13/09 12:06 PM
Ok. I'm bringing hot dogs, I think Humphrey is bringing patties, Jeff Smith water. We still need buns, chips, soda, condiments, local (topeka) people for grills and a head count. If you bring something you eat. Beeson jump in here and help out cause i know you can eat a ton.
Posted By: doug747 Re: tailgate at state? - 03/13/09 02:12 PM
Hey Jerry maybe you can get Reid, Pelosi, and Obama to give you some federal bailout money, if you are need help making it work!!??

Last year, Brawlers just did cold sandwiches, the year before we grilled. It was tough to find a good time to grill, cause kids are wrestling at all different times. Ended up one or two guys out there to do most of the grilling.
Posted By: HEADUP Re: tailgate at state? - 03/13/09 03:32 PM
i think i will try and turn this into profit. i will offer lower prices than the expo center and should make a killing.
menu
hamburger- $7
cheesburger- $9 (cheese is expensive you know)
chips (4)- $5
water (12oz)- $5
gatorade (8oz)- $10
come on out to the Parking Lot Cafe and eat up
here's some slogans i'm thinking about:
We only look expensive, compare and save!!
Save Money Eat Better
Feed Any Family for $99.95!
Hey Security Check THIS Bag!!!
OK maybe the last one is a little much
Posted By: Paratroop Re: tailgate at state? - 03/13/09 03:58 PM
I may pass on the parking lot dining. My son and I are planning on taping sandwiches, chips, and gatordade packets to our bodies. We tried it in Salina with great success. Our only fear is the dreaded body pat down at the door. But like I told my son in Salina, when the pat down starts, I'll distract them, run in different directions and I'll meet you at the truck! My hope is that the Expocentre security are not prepared for a long drawn out foot pursuit. We always end up parking on the far edge of the parking lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck at Subs everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted By: doug747 Re: tailgate at state? - 03/13/09 04:14 PM
Regarding the pat down: remember to tell the kids that crushed potato chips and smashed bread tastes the same as if it wasn't smashed.
Posted By: ReDPloyd Re: tailgate at state? - 03/13/09 04:16 PM
Paratroop,

Forget the pat down, beware of the food sniffing dogs. When I was going back overseas after a 15 day leave last year, I had packed four boxes of boy scout cookies in my assault pack. As I was trying to get on the plane in Dulles Airport, a drug sniffing dog spent a few anxious moments smelling by bag. I am not sure of the breed of this dog, but I am pretty sure that it must have been a Chocolate Lab.
Posted By: Paratroop Re: tailgate at state? - 03/13/09 05:15 PM
Lol. Great advice. I was planning on taping a package of hotdogs to my left calf this tourney, just for a little variety, but have decided against it. I am pretty sure I saw Expocentre security patrolling wtih a pretty intimidating daschund last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You boys are starting to scare me now.
Posted By: J. Dale Re: tailgate at state? - 03/23/09 04:43 PM
Alright, we all know who's going. I can probably get a couple of parents to volunteer for a shift on the grill and i can bring hot dogs. What will everyone else bring and how many parents can we get.

JD if you get this thing put together put me in for a couple hundred buns and bottled water.
Posted By: J. Dale Re: tailgate at state? - 03/23/09 08:16 PM
Got it Jeff. And thanks. Who's next?
Posted By: Cokeley Re: tailgate at state? - 03/24/09 03:29 AM
Can someone from Plainville see if John Crawford will tow the Traeger Tailgater up? We can fire that bad boy up and feed lots of hungry coaches and wrestling moms!
Posted By: luellen Re: tailgate at state? - 03/24/09 01:05 PM
JD, PM me about what you want me to bring. I will have two boys wrestling so I will come out when or if I get a chance.

As of now my forcast for saturday reads windy & 35 degrees & light snow. Hope it changes.

Posted By: J. Dale Re: tailgate at state? - 03/25/09 11:48 AM
Don't know if it's going to happen. Haven't got enough people to help yet.
Posted By: Mike Furches Re: tailgate at state? - 03/25/09 11:50 AM
I am planning on being there Friday night, but not the kids tournament, don't have a room for the wife and I, and just wanting to see some of those Sr. Classic matchups.

Sounds like snow cones won't be hard to make. I just have to remember to bring flavored syrup and cone cups.

I can bring chips and dip (Harry and David) and Velveeta/Rotel dip and a case of the favorite soft drink...and of course a case of diet soft drink....any other suggestions? Write back or PM me.

Paper Plates, cups and napkins or you okay there?

Sorry, but haven't figured out how to handle the grill obstacle so won't be tailgating at state this year. It was a good idea though
Posted By: doug747 Re: tailgate at state? - 03/26/09 01:45 AM
You pantywaists are going to let a little cool weather keep you from tailgating?!! Sissies...........

Doug,

I wrestled Dal in high school. I would rather grill in a blizzard than do that again. Therefore, I am not a pantywaist or a sissy, just smart.

This has been my favorite thread to read all year. I am sorry there will not be a tailgate this year, it would have been a lot of fun.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend, safe travels!!

Maybe next year the weather will hold out and we can get people to volunteer to help. I'm just tired of 2 things.

1. Concession stand prices

2. Patrick Cavanaugh trying to hijack my thread.
Posted By: Owlbacker Re: tailgate at state? - 03/26/09 01:35 PM
well the good news is the concession prices could allways go down

I vote we set up the hospitality room in Patrick's living room; close by, warm, including music entertainment by his monkey. Shuttle service will also be provided.

Thanks Cav!

I can provide the house, some food, some beverages. No guarantee on the shuttle service though. you all gave monkey a big head & he has advised he won't play venues as small as house parties. Little guy wants to do the national anthem at State. He's planning on lighting the guitar on fire at the end.
Posted By: usawks1 Re: tailgate at state? - 03/26/09 02:46 PM
Several years ago ... we did have the National Anthem played by a young man from Burlington. He did play it on the electric guitar!

Additionally one year, a young lady from Wellsville, played the Anthem on violin!

Jerry Dale. Your thread has officially been hijacked. See ya tomorrow!

I wrestled for the Ninja robed Fighting Frogs from Pratt. I hope they aren't still wearing the same warm ups. Very proud to have wrestled for Coach Cramer and for PHS, just didn't care much for the robes.
Posted By: doug747 Re: tailgate at state? - 03/27/09 01:06 AM
What ever happened to the Schreiner boys? I got it handed to me a few times by them.

I remember your name now that you said Pratt. Your early season tourney ALWAYS had Back in Black and You Shook Me All Night Long rocking during warmup time.
Posted By: ReDPloyd Re: tailgate at state? - 03/27/09 01:26 AM
Doug,

I haven't seen David or Dean in a long time. I am sure that they are doing well though, pretty intelligent twins. Nothing like a little AC/DC to get your blood pumping. We listened to Hells Bells quite a bit during practice as well. Good luck this weekend. You sure have a solid group of kids wrestling for you.

Bring ice shanty or igloo for cook out.
