We are a new club this year, and we have wrestled in open tournaments. We were told that our kids could not wrestle in novice tournaments because they have placed in open tournaments. Is this true, because we were never told that.

Thanks

There are no state-wide rules on what defines a novice. Many novice tournaments set their own criteria. Generally, I think most tournaments consider a wrestler a novice if he/she is a first or second year wrestler, and has not won an open tournament. However, there would be exceptions to this; for example, if a wrestler placed first in a bracket with only one other wrestler.

I would agree that Novice tournaments should be open to first and second year wrestlers (this would include almost everyone in the 6u division.)I'm aware of your club and think you guys are doing a great job with your kids. They are well coached and very good sportsman (and sportswomen). Novice Tourneys are about building confidence and gaining experience. Keep doing what is right for your kids, your the one who knows their abilities.

The Lyndon Kids are the real deal, they are ready for the open tournaments. They have been taught with winning attitudes, some of them like Brianna is only proud of her medals if she won them by beating stiff compitition. Im proud of all my young wrestlers.

Travis,

I believe that 100%! I saw her put it to a couple of boys at the Tornado Tournament. My son wrestled her at the Rossville torunament and had all he could handle! Great job!
