Who do we watch for in 6A next year?
Posted By: Chief Renegade Re: 6A 2007 State Team Winners! - 06/05/06 01:36 AM
Goddard only loses Moses, Freeman and Traina. They have to be a favorite to repeat.
Posted By: Chase Re: 6A 2007 State Team Winners! - 06/05/06 01:38 AM
Yea we lost 3x placer Chadd Posch too...but yea I'd definitly look for Goddard to repeat...those also a rumor of a junior stud coming to Goddard...but only time will tell...
Posted By: sam25 Re: 6A 2007 State Team Winners! - 06/05/06 04:16 AM
who is the sophomore stud coming?? And plus it might actually be a close race because that is 4 quality kids that they are losing. 2 finalist and another placer so those are some big points they are losing.

Only 1 I have heard of possibly 2 or 3 from Andale. Would be nice to squelsh these rumors, remember the days when a kid stuck it out at one school. High School is becoming like pro sports now.

I disagree,in pro sports an athlete is paid to do a job.Highschool provides an education and opportunity to compete in sports for a PRICE to the student or parent.I think if a different school offers better educational opportunities for your child,or coaching, sticking it out at one school isn't such a good thing.I want to get the best "bang for my buck".If all teachers and coaches were the same,I would agree with you but we all know that isn't the case.

Is this an attempt to squelsh the rumor or continue to add to it?

Is this what is referred to as hypocrisy at its best?

In pro sports athletes receive remuneration for their services and high school athletes risk losing their amateur status and being banned from high school and quite likely college athletics for this activity. Not a good analogy.

I must be that bad of a coach because nobody is coming my way! It's okay, I like making a state placer or champion out of a kid who has never wrestled before! hahahahhaha! I'll take a tough thug over a pre-modona brat (spell check) any day of the week!

andale had a good year last year and it sounds like they have good coaching and alot of support from the community. what would be the reason for these kids to leave. besides being an athlete in a small town is a great atmosphere to compete in. you rarely get that same atmosphere in a larger school.

Well if you look at it...Goddard dominated without their #2 ranked 45lber (who is returning), and Freeman. If things played out well for those two the team title would have been even more lop sided...

Goddard has these guys returning..
103-Rotha SQ
112-Caldwell SC
119-Houlden SP (don't forget about Bolay though)
140-Means SP
145-Bonewell (in the running for a title bar injury), also Schroth SQ
152-Beard SC
160-Villegas SQ (ranked during the season)
171-Elliot 2x SP

Thats 2 champs, 3 placers, 3 qualifier, 1 hopeful

I expect a repeat by a similar margin to this years tournment

ps: dont mistake me for being cocky or a Richard...just showin some facts and lil' lion pride!!!

I think a team that was under rated last year was Lawrence High, We did alot better than anybody expected, In fact, Lawrence, as a city had more state placers than eve before, but back to LHS we are losin one of our best senior classes, were losin Kellerman, Halpin, Williams(3 state placers) plus a lot of other quality wrestlers. I look for Lawrence High to make top 15 next year. I will be very suprised if we crack the top 10.

GODDARD WINS LAST YEAR BARELY "WITHOUT THE SENIORS"!!!!!!!
Posted By: parkwayred Re: 6A 2007 State Team Winners! - 06/07/06 04:17 PM
Goddard is going to be tough, no dought about it, they return allot of quality young men but this is a key point! “Young” including their new Coach. Anytime you change coaches strange things happen. New ways of doing business, deferent philosophies and adjustments from all. Coach Means will be successful… but I think you are putting an awful lot of pressure on him to perform for being a first year head coach. We all wish him the very best!
Posted By: grappler119 Re: 6A 2007 State Team Winners! - 06/07/06 06:38 PM
I heard all Andale state placers are going to the University of Goddard. They will compete against college teams this year.

Maybe your right....we had an amazing freshmen class this year...
Posted By: bmeans Re: 6A 2007 State Team Winners! - 06/09/06 01:42 AM
Chase I got your back!

Goddard does not win last year without their SENIORS, or their JUNIORS, or their SOPHMORES, or their FRESHMAN, or their 25 JV wrestlers that showed up everyday to work hard. It was a team effort and to single anyone out takes away from all who were responsible.

Chase worked hard all summer hauling those freshman to freestyle practice at Derby. Traina pushed Mitchell Means to the brink everyday allowing him to compete at a high level. I could give numerous other examples of how our team members were unselfish. Coach Jilka also deserves a lot of credit. As freshman this senior class only won 1 dual match. They came along way.

State tournament facts:
Moses scores 21 points
Freeman scores 3 points
Traina scores 24.5 points
Posch scores 13 points

That is 61.5 points that will be tough to replace. Wichita South wins without our senior class including two more finalist in Munoz (defeated by Moses) and Price (defeated by Traina).

Parkwayred is correct (I WISH I WAS STILL YOUNG) in that we have our work cut out for us next year. However, the returning group of wrestlers are hard working, self motivated, and unselfish which should make it easier. Thanks to Coach Jilka they now know what it takes.

State is a long way off and I am not one to make predictions. Too many variables from injuries, to grades, to girlfriends, etc. All I know is that we will work hard, HAVE SOME FUN, and attempt to get better as citizens and wrestlers.

I apologize for the long post but felt a need to defend our senior class and the TEAM effort.

What the heck are you talking about? The only hypocrisy I see on these forums often has the name Salyer attached to it. Are you saying if these kids all transfer, they are violating rules or what? Please explain yourself instead of making veiled comments. I was referring to the reality that kids aren't loyal to their school anymore, and if you can transfer from one school to another for any reason, then that lack of loyalty is like pro sports.

It is always interesting to me how much of a "bullseye" gets put on a team after winning the top prize. Over the past few years, much debate about Turner, St Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Carroll and Goddard, their "recruiting" tactics and other sidebar commentary. From this seat, they all earned their titles...on the mat. It takes contributions from all those associated with the program. Blue Valley won a State Championship in 1997 with 4 Seniors not wrestling varsity. I believe it is what you do in the wrestling room that takes you to the trophy room. Good luck to ALL teams, because in February, we get to do it all over again.
