About what percentage is failing the first hydration test during the Alpha weight weigh in? How is it going up to this point?
Our school only had one that was not hydrated enough. Had some pretty wiggely guys waiting to take test. Our school nurse did the testing, and haven't heard anything negative. It did take quite a while, but that was quite a few people being tested.
Thanks.....262 views, and only one response.
We tested 18 wrestlers with no failures.
How can you not pass your alpha weight? I'm a regular on the drug testing circuit, you can always drink prior and during the test! It's not like this something you need to study for!
Come on Red, you know you study for this Test!!
Ned
No Ned, it’s not “studying” it’s called “sustaining”! Which can be rather difficult for a 70’s child with teenagers? But I still have my Grateful Dead eight tracks.
My bad, our kid did not fail the test. But failed to do the test.
shelstin, kmc had about 25% fail first time tested.
I think the real problem for “failing” the test is going to come during certification process. Hydration is a tough thing to do at 5:30 in the morning for anybody. The competition weigh-in rule really put Kid’s, Coaches and Administrators in a pickle for compliance to this section. Johnny makes weight and is not hydrated he doesn’t wrestle that day at his wish to be certified weight. The spot is left “Open” or he wait’s till next week to certify, that is if there is a next week.
Actually (correct me if I'm wrong) if Johnny wants to certify at 125 and get gets up at 5:30 in the morning and is obviously dehydrated but weighs in at 124 he can still wrestle 125 that day... he just wont be able to certify. The BIG problem comes on his last offical weigh in before Jan 12. where he wakes up early in the morning at 124 and is still dehydrated. Because after that point a wrestlers season will be terminated and will be removed from the team.
That is the way I understand it. He could wrestle that day at 125. He would be able to certify at the next weight up but I would think he would not wrestle that day without a challenge for that spot against the heaver guy. That is if the Administrator in charge is willing to stand around and wait for Johnny to drink some water and reweigh in an hour or so.
What it tells me is for certification for 125 you need to cut to 122 and drink three pounds of water before weigh ins and you will be fine.Is this a system that is better or worse?

I think your exactly right, lose a couple of pounds under the weight you need to be, get to weigh ins early and then start drinking water till your right at weight. Two or three pounds below ought to do and ya only have to get it done once.
I think it's very important that kids certify as soon as they can. I know that a few schools that piloted this program last year had trouble doing weigh in during the hour allotted with the hydration test. It sounds stupid, but if, for example, you weigh in at 7, it might be best to have them come in at 5 a pound or so under, check hydration, and drink water if they need to. I think it would be much easier to pass the hydration test for certification in the afternoon. Rick Bowden said in the rules meetings that he was considering that possibility.
Shelsten, I think your on track… the previous comments puzzle me because it’s contrary to what is trying to be accomplished. A kid will suck down really hard and then hydrate back up to his desired weight. We have kids losing more weight than they should have to for the weight class they intend to wrestle. I still think monitoring with education is the proper approach. Not mandated rules… we have already seen threads on how to “beat the system” and not the positive side of why it’s important. A proactive stance needs to taken not reactive!

Actually Johnny cant certify at ANY weight is he isnt hydrated... and if he dont have a certified weight by Jan. 12 his season is TERMINATED!!!
To Everyone on the Forum-
I'd just like to point out that Red giving his two cents on weight loss is like Red giving his two cents on flapping his arms and flying to the moon: neither is ever going to happen.
As far as cutting to 122 and then drinking three pounds of water? That's exactly what I would have done. It's not the safest strategy, but if it worked, I'd do it.
Also--this new forum design makes my Monster Truck look absolutely gorgeous.
i failed that

It’s good to have you back Sir Garker! We all know your old school... if I remember right you cut about 40 lbs. And they called child services on Momma Parker!
We have had all of our kids pass so far, but one that couldn't work under pressure! I guess we can call it projectile disfunction! Zero percent failure rate.
I guess we can call it projectile disfunction!
aka ... shy-bladder syndrome
we had at least 4 people from our team fail the hydration test... one kid had the "projectile dysfunction" another had pee that resembled a miller light and another one was like root beer
The Miller Lite should have passed. Root Beer kid has a problem. We had kids drink so much dang water that their alpha weight was probably three or four pounds heavier than it had to be and the color chart didn't show a color that clear, but we are all good on the hydration test! We have one kid that has lost almost 8% of his body weight and hasn't started cutting yet. Think he was water logged? He is going to cut over 10%, and will have to get a waiver. But, he WAS well hydrated.
Does anyone know how the doctor's waiver will factor in to the certification process this year? I'm assuming they still have to pass a hydration test to certify, even if they have a waiver from the doctor saying that their weight is ok.
We had our first competition weigh in yesterday and so I told all my guys to try to pass the hydration test if they could so we could get as many out of the way as possible. Of my 44 wrestlers 19 did not even try (of those 6 didn't even make weight, 8 forgot and went to the bathroom when the woke up and so couldn't go again, and 5 knew they wouldn't pass it).
Of the 25 who did try the test 17 passed it and 8 failed it. So one weigh in into the season I already have 1/3 of my team certified. One or two may still drop a weight later in this month but I figure the sooner I get this hydration test out of my life the better. The reamining 27 will try to pass on Saturday and we will keep going every weigh in until all are certified.
By the way even though we didn't wrestle last night Rick Bowden gave us permission to still use the hydration test because we weighed in at 6:30am and they didn't cancel the dual until 12:00pm. So it was an "official team weigh in for compeition" even thought the competitioin was cancelled.
Did anyone else try the hydration test yesterday? What were your numbers like?

So how many people have yet to piss excellence? Just wondering cause I filled up a whole toilet bowl full this morning. You could've stuck it in a filtering device like Kevin Costner in Waterworld and redrank the stuff it was so good.
