Those in attendance witnessed a miracle of sorts. Pete Eck 160 lb. State Champ last year wrestled this year for the first time in competition. Pete defaulted his 5th/6th place match after going 1-2 on the day. His two losses were very close.(4-2)(3-0). Pete pinned his first opponent.

Pete has practiced all year working hard everyday. Having witnessed Pete's work ethic and determination I have no doubts that he will return to his State Championship form.

There are not very many young men that would put it on the line after what Pete has been through before being 100%. It has been inspiring to watch Pete work his way back. The coaching staff and wrestlers at Goddard are lucky to have someone like Pete as part of our program. If we get down or discouraged with our petty problems all we have to do is watch Pete working as hard as he can to get back on top.

Thanks Pete for your inspiration and attitude.

Does anyone have the score of the Elliott v. Oeser match? I believe that Oeser had previously won over Elliott 9-8 at Maize & 13-6 at BVNW.

Elliott 11-3

Thanks, do you know if they will meet again before State?
Posted By: bmeans Re: Goddard Tournament - 02/04/07 04:52 AM
They are in the same regional. Elliott lost to Oeser Thursday night in a dual 5-0.

Yes he did, but last nights match was very intense and neither wrestler was going to give up. The OT was very exhausting to watch. Great match to both.

Goddard dominates wrestling invitational
Wichita Eagle Correspondent
ALLIE SANTIAGO

The Goddard Lions stood up to their No. 1 ranking in Class 6A by rolling over their competition at their home invitational on Saturday.

Eight of their wrestlers competed in the championship matches while two made it to the consolation finals, as the Lions outdistanced second place Maize 259.5-213

Logan Rotha, Tyler Caldwell, Mitchell Means, Brandon Bonewell, Boaz Beard, Roman Villegas and Dusty Elliot all placed first for the Lions, a major reason for their large-margin win.

"We did very well today," Goddard coach Brett Means said. "We definitely have a target on our backs and I feel the pressure. I don't know if my guys feel it, but they work very hard."

Means said that he and the team have a simple way of handling that pressure.

"We don't talk about it," Means said. "We just have to know that no one is going to give it to us. Derby, Garden City, and Maize all have great teams, and those are just what I know of."

As Goddard enters the latter part of the season, Means said that much of the Lions' success can be attributed to individual determination.

"A lot of these guys are self-motivated and they work hard on their own," Means said. "The others follow them. I am very lucky to have such a motivated group."

Second-place Maize took six of its wrestlers to the finals and three to the consolation round, only one weight short of Goddard's 10 championship round qualifiers. However, only two of the finalists, Zac Hentzen (145 pounds) and Rich Carter (215) placed first for the Eagles.

Great Bend, which took

five wrestlers to the finals and four to the consolation finals, came in third with 212.5 points. Bret Bahe (130) and Joe Schridde (135) won their weight classes.

While Goddard pulled away with the victory easily, there were several close championship matches. At 135, Schridde defeated Goddard's Brent Fisher in double overtime, 2-1. In the heavyweight final, North's Ryan Alliman defeated Northwest's Brock Heithous in the final seconds of the third period, 4-3.

My sincere congratulations go out to Pete Eck, his family, and his team mates. I am sure that there were a few wet eyes from those who knew his story when he stepped on the mat for competition for the first time. He has already won a battle much more important than any state championship.
