I fully support it, but how did Hynick get ranked above Averson?

I have no idea ???

At 145 Travis Budke (TMP) and Adam Lackey (Smoky Valley) are looking very good. At 171 Chris Stuart (Augusta) has beaten Brandon Rusk (Wellington) twice I believe.

I think Zweygart from Colby at 140 is a sophomore.
Posted By: TeddyBallgame Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/07/07 05:54 PM
I understand the method you're using for ranking teams, but I believe Circle should be in the top 25 (at least). Just using the team scores from their tourny (Circle Invite), it looks like they're being snubbed a little bit:

Circle - 158pts (won the tourny)
Andover Central - 157pts (currently ranked #7)
ElDorado - 95.5pts (currently ranked #24)
Posted By: RedStorm Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/07/07 06:17 PM
How many finalists did they have?
Posted By: LoveToWrestle Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/07/07 09:58 PM
If they're not in the top 25 then they're really not worth arguing over.
Posted By: wrestlingrunner Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/07/07 10:06 PM
First off, Circle had three wrestlers in the championship match, Jacobs at 103 (lost in OT), Hoyt at 125 (won) and Plummer at 189 (pinned his man). It bothers me that the official KWCA rankings have Hoyt out of the top six and Umscheid in the top 6, even though he lost two matches last weekend, one of them being to a freshman from Wichita Independent.

You know the rankings really dont mean anything at all, what matters is at the state tournament and how you wrestle there.
Posted By: TeddyBallgame Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/07/07 10:15 PM
You're correct...it's not worth arguing over. I'm just stating my view based on my observation. I've got no stake in the matter either way. It just tends to "raise an eyebrow" when they've won two tourneys (Halstead & Circle) & aren't ranked in the top 25. They put 3 wrestlers in the finals @ their invite. They ended up with the following places: 2 champions (125lbs-Hoyt 28-5 record, and 189lbs-Plummer 28-5 record) / 1 2nd place (103lbs-Jacobs 28-3 record).

I'm confused with the 103lb group. On Jan 27th Weller, Piper(#5 4A) took first at the Atchison Tourn. over Goodwin (#1 6A) Lawrence 9-2.
On Feb 3 Goodwin took first at the Rosehill tourn over Sparr (#2 4A) Rosehill, Stoot (#3 4A)Andale.
At the WY CO tourn, Weller took first over Wauer (#4 5A) Washington and Sauls (#5 5A) Schlagle.
Somehow this undefeated kid with wins over three ranked wrestlers is at #5.
Can someone help with my confussion?
Posted By: Alpha75 Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/07/07 11:02 PM
In my opinion these rankings are simply a recognition of great wrestling. Any of the top 16 have an equal shot at winning the state title even though there may be a few favorites. These so called "rankings" don't mean anything. They are merely there to make people feel like they have a grasp on how things may end up.
Posted By: gene6262 Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/07/07 11:15 PM
They only really move a wrestler up in ranking when he beats another wrestler in his same weight and class. Weller is a excellent wrestler and will probably do really well at state. Also like Alpha75 stated "these rankings are simply a recognition of great wrestling".

When talking about rankings, I have seen Circle at a few tournaments where their guys have amazing records and don't even place at some tournaments. It's not a secret that Circle doesn't wrestle that tough of competition, look as the teams the wrestle against in tournaments... I had a 13-14 record one year and beat a guy from Circle who was 20 something and like 5-8 losses....
Posted By: RedStorm Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/08/07 04:46 AM
I have answers to many of your questions. Before we go comparing schedules of one school to the next keep in mind that there is a level of subjectivity to these things. I am sorry that Circle is not feeling the love. I wish my Cardinals could get some love. Lots of kids deserve some love. That is a credit to how competitive 4A is and not a deliberate slight to anyone. What is it the T-Birds? Tell those guys to get fired up and prove how ignorant the rankers (Lamar included) are.

First of all. I'd like to congratulate Derek Weller for the year he's having. He's a great kid and has been fundamentally tough for a long time in kids wrestling. That win over Goodwin was eye opening to say the least. Having said that, I would have him ranked 4th in 5A ahead of Wauer and Sauls. In 6A, I would still rank him 3rd behind Goodwin and Vesta. In 4A, he should be 4th behind Slyter, Sparr and Stroot.

I know the head to head against Goodwin changed some thinking on Weller. Just as in many late season ranking matches, beating a kid 2 out of 3 gets you the spot. With Goodwin the senior, he keeps the ranking. That weight is tough near the top with Keller, Wood and Stokes in 5A. One thing is for sure. Watch out for Derek Weller at 4A State!

Dear Circle Fans -
I will be the first to attest that Circle is on the rise. Are they one of the top 25 teams in 4A? In my opinion they are without a doubt. But - don't expect the recognition to come until the season is over. One of the biggest thrills the Andover Central team had all last season was seeing the 4A Administration at the State tournament scramble around to make a placard for Andover Central so that ACHS could be place on the scoreboard. The sight of a taped up piece of cardboard with ACHS written in magic marker in the 8th place was a rallying cry for our guys. Circle needs to get a chip on their shoulder and show everyone they belong. They have made a beleiver out of me.

You say "Wichita Independent" like they deserve no respect. The kid you are talking about was probably 16-3 as of 3 weeks ago. Jeff Watkins has done a great job of developing that program, and you can expect it to be a perennial power in a few years. He had great success at Wichita West, and will do the same at Independent. Rankings mean absolutely nothing at this point. They are fun to look at, but the only people that really care are parents. Wrestlers shouldn't even look at the dang things!

Agreed. I remember years where Chapman had guys ranked that didn't even qualify for state. Circle had a kid one year that was undefeated at 103 at like 33-0 or something, and didn't even qualify back in the early 2000's from what I recall as well.
Posted By: Nate Smith Re: 4A Rankings - 2/7/07 - 02/08/07 09:29 PM
The rankings are put up to get a reaction from everyone on this forum. They do not mean a thing until the medal is placed around your neck at the end of the month. There is countless stories of how the rankings do not represent of the weight turned out after state.

My senior year the person ranked first ahead of me didn't even place. No matter what is listed in the rankings from November to February everything will be determined in a couple weeks.

Not at all. I wrestled the same kid in eighth grade, he killed me. Independent placed well at the tourney, too. All I'm saying is that a wrestler that is supposedly very good shouldn't neccesarily lose to a frosh, whether he's good or not.

I dont know how we got in the spotlight here but...I dont pay much attention to the rankings and I kind of like flying under the radar so if we arent in the rankings it doesnt hurt my feelings any. We just try to take care of what we can control and preach working hard to our kids! Good luck to all of you at your respective regionals and see you in Salina!

If it helps any, there are outside factors to some rankings. I wasn't ranked my senior and only ended up losing one match. It happens but proves rankings don't mean everything.
