At 112, it didn't show a team. Thought that was 3 for GC.

Hard Work Pays Off

Red Demons stomp rival Buffaloes on senior night
By JR O'Dell
Dodge City Daily Globe

Heart, determination, desire and domination. These are all words that could be used to describe the Dodge High wrestling team's 43-18 win Monday night over Garden City.
The Red Demons competed in their only home dual of the season against the Buffaloes, and it was senior night.

The Demons only lost two matches, both by decision. Demons Addison Winger and Jesse Trent pinned their opponents. The rest were either hard-fought or dominating decisions.

Only 6 of the Buffaloes' 18 points were won in competition. The other 12 were because of forfeits in open weight classes.

Junior Jacob Bruton won at 125 pounds by a 10-4 decision. The victory was as sweet as revenge comes because he had lost to his opponent twice this season.

From the opening whistle, Bruton had his opponent on his back and never let up until the end.

"It was different," Bruton said. "I went out there like I was going to win it and he'd have no say in it."

Bruton said he felt his conditioning was better, and he was proved right when his hand was raised high.

"I have to give big-time props to my junior Jacob Bruton," senior Chris Wright said. "He just wanted it. His attitude was to never give up."

Wright won his match at 140 over Michael Arellano by a 5-2 decision.

In the third period, Wright was down, but he saw an opportunity and took it. He shot in for a double-leg, picked Arellano up and slammed him to the ground. Wright looked for the pin but didn't get it. He did, however, get 5 points to put himself over the top.

"He gave up for a second," Wright said. "I noticed and took advantage."

He said he was more conditioned than Arellano.

"He beat me in Garden City," Wright said. "I wanted to win bad."

Coach Mike Bammes said Wright did exactly what he was taught to do.

"He's one of the guys that wants to be here every day," Bammes said. "He kept pushing and didn't quit."

Two of Dodge's biggest matches came at 160 and 171 pounds.

At 160, Spencer Kaufman won a razor-tight 6-5 decision over Adrian McElroy. It was a victory where Kaufman showed a lot of heart in fighting from behind.

"I just thought, 'It's our home dual, I can't accept defeat,'" Kaufman said.

Kaufman was ahead as time expired, and he kept McElroy from getting any extra points.

"I knew he would tie me up and try to throw me," Kaufman said. "I had to stay in good position."

At 171, the Demons' Adam Ybarra was down 8-3 to Adam Gonzalez with time waning. Ybarra pulled off a 5-point reversal and a pinning situation to tie things up and send it to overtime.

In overtime he easily got behind Gonzalez for the 2 points and a 10-8 win.

"I used a move I've never used before: the twister," Ybarra said.

Ybarra said as soon as he felt his opponent's hand on his elbow, he rolled into it and grabbed a half nelson, rolling Gonzalez over.

"My mom was here cheering me on," Ybarra said. "I didn't want to disappoint her. It (the twister) just popped out of nowhere."

There was another close match at 130. Hunter Edwards pulled a third-period reversal to beat Garden City's Eddy Gomez 2-0.

Senior Jesse Barber didn't have a match at 119 pounds and won via forfeit.

"I'm very disappointed for Barber," Bammes said. "It was senior night. His opponent made weight and then decided to skip some classes."

The final two matches seemed academic for the Demons. At 215 Jesse Trent pinned Zach Rupp and at 285, Jeremiah Lee won a dominating 13-0 decision over Cody Wilson.

Justin Blundell and David Bonner both lost by decision. They were both in positions where they could have been pinned, but they didn't let that happen.

As the matches played out, it appeared to be Dodge's night.

"We were all on track tonight," Bruton said. "Our people came out ready to wrestle. We had a lot of fight."

Winning on senior night was a big accomplishment for the Demons, but Bammes said the win gave them something else bigger: a victory over the Buffaloes.

"It feels great," Wright said. "We haven't beat Garden City in I don't know how long. We're definitely pumped up. It shows what hard work in the practice room does."

Bammes said the wrestlers had a strong work ethic, and hard practices and good practice partners pushed them over the top.

The Demons will next be in action on Thursday, when they travel to Pratt to battle Pratt, Hays and Liberal.

Garden City High School wrestling coach Monte Moser isn't one to point fingers.

Following Monday's dual in Dodge City though, a 44-18 loss for the Buffaloes, Moser was quick to single himself out as the biggest factor behind the disappointing finish.

"I got out-coached," Moser said. "Their kids were better prepared. Our kids fought well, but their's fought better."

After beating up on Hays and Great Bend in a triangular last week, Garden City struggled against the Red Demons, winning in only two contested matches. Anthony Shockley defeated Justin Blandall 12-2 at 152-pounds, while 189-pounder Jace Banner defeated David Bonner 9-3. Colt McElroy and Joey Dozier notched wins by forfeit.

"It was definitely a surprise," Moser said of the loss. "They did a good job preparing for us. (Dodge City coach Mike Bannes) Bammes has watched us several times this year. They had excellent hand control and never let us get into a rhythm.

The loss is the Buffaloes second to Western Athletic Conference competition, their other defeat coming to Liberal in early January.

While the loss throws Garden City's WAC hopes into doubt, Moser says the result could be beneficial in the long run.

"We're going to definitely do a gut check," Moser said. "But the other thing is that this might be exactly what we need to get ourselves focused for the final push this season." The Buffaloes will look to rebound when they travel to Colby on Friday.
