6A - 135 - Means, Peoples, Livengood, Nelson, Wagner, Gonzalez, Winger

4A - 119 - Slyter, Ribelin, Weller, Cokeley, Anderson, Sparr, Rockhold, Jesseph

4A 119 looks to be the hardest
Posted By: bigblueballs Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/13/08 07:19 PM
agreed. 119 looks loaded.
Posted By: Chief Renegade Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/13/08 07:22 PM
I think 6A 135 is slightly tougher.

Means - State Champion
Nelson - State Champion
Wagner - State Runner-up
Livengood - 3rd at State
Gonzalez - 3rd at State
Winger - 6th at State
Peoples - Ranked #2 in 6A
Posted By: D Petrie119 Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/13/08 07:25 PM
4A - 119 -
Slyter-state champ at 103
Ribelin-5th at 112
Weller-2nd place at 103
Anderson-5th at 119
Sparr-3rd place at 103
Rockhold-2nd at 119
Jesseph-3rd at 119
Cokeley-ranked 4th in state

I would have to go with 119 lbs or 189 lbs in 321A
5 returning state placers at each weight and lots of depth in each of those weight classes state wide.
Posted By: Cowboy12 Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/13/08 10:12 PM
6A 135 is pretty stacked. it will be fun to watch how that one ends up. 321A 119 is tough, but its not even close to some of the other weight classes in the state.
i think 4a 119 is the hardest. Sorry no offense to the 5a and 6a class, but it is much much easier to place there than at 4a. 6th at state and 3rd at state in 6a is not nearly as hard as lets say 3-6th place at 4a. Just my humble opinion
Posted By: Cowboy12 Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/14/08 12:03 AM
that bracket is also very tough too. I don't think you can say that about 5a. 5a was very tough last year, with some very loaded brackets. But i do agree with that 4a is a very tough class and maybe one of the toughest out of all of them. 4a and 5a is usually always the toughest i think. But it all depends on the weight classes some of the time because some can be very loaded in a classification and some other classification can be very weak. So it all depends on the year.
yea cowboy i will agree with you on that. 5a was very tough last year. But sometimes 5a is also weak. Not last year though. Definately 5a and 4a are the toughest. 4a is still harder though, i have yet to see a year when 4a is weak, and i dont think it will ever be b/c it has so many schools.

There are a lot of ways to skin this cat. I'm just curious; which 4A or 321A regional would Bishop Carrol, Valley Center, Derby, Goddard, or Manhattan not win? I know that there are a ton of talented wrestlers at all levels, and I know that there have been years when the top teams in the smaller classes were the best anywhere in the state. I just don't think it's so right now. Now, the 12th best kid in 6A and 5A state brackets are most likely not as good as the 12th best kid in 4 & 321A state, but I don't think you rate how tough a division is by how the second tier does. Maybe you do, I'm just not sure why.

Please don't take this as disrespect towards any team or wrestler in the state. I've coached 321, 5, & 6A and wrestled in 4A. Tough wrestlers are tough wrestlers. Period. I'm amazed at how small communities like Hoxie, Clay Center, Norton, and many others can put such tough kids on the mat so often. I'm also amazed at how many people bash the big classes because they are not 32 teams deep. No class in Kansas is.

Good luck to ALL wrestlers this weekend. Go wrestle hard and make memories, not regrets. Leave it all on the mat.
I am not bashing any other divisions. I am just stating my opinion. Yes those teams are very good, infact almost unstoppable and they do very well at the 5a and 6a levels. BC would win at any divison idk anyone who can argue that, they are the best team in the state of Kansas. I guess you can say im rating second tier, but im really not. Im just stating thats its harder to place in 4a than any other divison. Yes you put those teams in 4a and yes most they would have champions no doubt. 5a and 6a have great teams and wrestlers dont get me wrong, i think that 4a just has more depth, more good wrestlers than any divison . Sorry if i offended anyone in this statement, but i am a little bit, just tad bit biased to 4a.
Posted By: Ryan Jilka Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/14/08 01:49 AM
You certainly did not offend me. I love these discussions, and you are as entitled to your opinion as anyone. That's what makes this nation great. I would say that often, it is harder to make it to state in 4A (and 321A), but being a champion or high placer is no tougher.
Yea i totally agree winning state is no different in any division, if that was the case then my edge would go to 5a cause they would have the most champions if we had a grand state(cough cough needs to happen again lol cough cough). But yes 4a and 1a-3a is much harder to make it, not win it theres no difference there.

I'll take the bet on the 4A Regional at Clearwater. I don't think Manhattan or Valley Center would either one win that regional.

Oh man, I did forget how dang tough Colby is this year (again). I know there's never a lock on a tournament, but it's a fun topic. Good luck to ALL.

5-Dustin Hill, 12, Santa Fe Trail
6-Matt Brock- SQ at 130
7-Austin Atwood- SQ at 112
8-Anthony Whittley- SQ at 119

compared to 4a 119-

Ribelin-5th at 112

Sparr-3rd place at 103

Posted By: giddyup Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/18/08 07:57 PM
No offense to 5 or 6A....but when you look at amount of schools participating in any regional tourney, 4A AND 321A have more partipants. Believe me....coming from (my opinion) one of the toughest 4A regionals (Clearwater)....it's an honor just to get to Salina! Look at schools that attend....sure wasn't a cakewalk for most of the weights!!! There isn't alot of years that teams like Andale, Pratt, Colby and Goodland have weak teams!!!!!!

The 4A 119 class has a 75.5% win rate based on Will's numbers. Someone with a lot of time could figure out the other brackets to see if one has a higher percentage. It doesn't settle anything, but it is a fair indicator.
Posted By: Chief Renegade Re: toughest high school weight class - 02/19/08 02:30 AM
4A 103 - 77%
4A 140 - 75.8%
4A 119 - 75.5%
6A 135 - 74.2%
4A 130 - 72%
6A 140 - 71%
6A 130 - 69%

Chief, now you're showing support for 4A's depth over 6A. State places 6, and you're dropping the comparison down to four! \:\)

And just to throw some support to the little guys in 4A, using their full bracket they have a record of 414 -127.

I could not resist my toughest brackets in high school this year.
Using Intermat Ranking. I would have to see records, head to head matchups for the seeding of this tournament. I know a few more Kansas kids that could slip into this tournament unattached
and I think they could make a little noise.

321A 130- 411 wins and 97 losses. For a win-loss percentage of 80.9055118, making it the toughest weight in terms of win-loss. Even though there are only four returning state placers there are many state qualifiers that have returned that have really improved.

6A's Maple and Tanenbaum would finish 1st and 2nd in that 4A 130 bracket.

I have not seen Noblett or Callahan wrestle but I have seen Rice wrestle 3 times in the finals at Derby, the finals at Newton, (two pretty tough tournaments) and the Reginal finals. One of those might beat him but I sure wouldn't bet aginst him and it would be a great match to see.

Shipman means "Maple" rather than "Rice". He has been having rice attacks lately on his mind. ;-)

I definately think that 4A 119 was the deepest. 2 or 3 former state placers didn't even place.

I think 6A 135 was still the toughest weight.

4A 119 - 37 losses by the top 6.
6A 135 - 18 losses by the top 6.

In fact, 18 losses from the top 6 in 6A 135 was by far the lowest loss total compared to any 4A weight.

4A/ 6A
103 - 28/ 103 - 38
112 - 51/ 112 - 53
119 - 37/ 119 - 58
125 - 45/ 125 - 64

189 - 46/ 189 - 47
215 - 33/ 215 - 50
285 - 41/ 285 - 51

The Chase Nelson/Mitchell Means 6A 135 final was the highlight of the tournament from two returning State Champions.

While I don't intend to slight 6A 135, I'd have to go with 4A 119. Returning state champs take 4th and 5th in this bracket. As far as a toughness test, I'd like to think of how many times would these kids place comparatively if wrestled tournament 10 times. I'd say 119 comes out about 10 different ways, with several possible state champs.
