... NHSCA Senior Nationals!

Team Kansas is present and accounted for. Hopefully this year we will crown several All-Americans and perhaps have a couple contend for a National Championship!

We have 28 seniors that are going to display their skills. They are among the 880 seniors in this tourney! In this tourney, there are several 4-time State Champs and 3-time Champs are plentiful!!

Personally, my wife who is accompanying me, and I arose at 2 am in preparation for the 6:10 am departure from KCI. So, needless to say, I'm a bit numb (yes, Barry, more so than usual) from a lack of sleep!

We've had a coaches meeting at 6 am edt, and in 10 minutes have a meeting with the athletes!

So ... this is my first report! Hopefully, several follow!
Yeah Randy! I look forward to reading your reports! Thank you!

Randy you are still in charge of mat patrol this weekend at state.

We will make sure to stay online and give plenty of updates this weekend at our tournament, thanks for your hard work and great updates.

Randy -
You are the eyes and ears of Kansas. Do us proud.
Juniors:

112 David Demo, MT vs Tyler Stokes, KS Winner Demo 8-4

135 CJ Napier, KS vs Cahill Oldham UT Winner Napier 18-3
135 CJ Napier, KS vs Jake O'Hara, PA Winner Napier 4-2

Randy are these the only other Kansas guys besides the seniors????
Yes, to the best of my knowledge, they are! I guess some wrestlers are using the Brute-Adidas Nationals as a substitute. That is understandable but the competition level in the NSHCA Nationals, in most cases, is superior!!

I went over to the venue last night and spoke with Todd Napier and a couple of members of the family. What great ambassadors for the sport!!

I'm off to breakfast and we have a practice session at 9 am!

More later!!!

Does anyone have a link for the site that is posting results? I didn't see brackets on the NHSCA site, but maybe I missed them. Thx.

they are on the nhsca website but here are links to the underclass brackets..

Can you post the Senior brackets link? Thanks!
Randy,

Besides the Brute Adidas tournament, some of the high school wrestlers are also participating in the Kansas Kids wrestling tournament series. The Kids State tournament is this weekend.

Dang, makes me wish I was still stationed in VA. I lived about 9 blocks from where it's being held this year!
the senior bracket is not posted yet on their website...wrestling had started yesterday before they finally posted the underclass brackets.
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/27/08 02:52 PM
CJ Napier won his 3rd and is now in qtr finals.
Is he wrestling Kyle West? He is ranked #2 in California. A very tough match coming up!
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/27/08 03:27 PM
Yes - he has West next. Tough match but we will see how it goes.
The Seniors weigh-in at 2 pm (edt) and then they get the chance to rehydrate and get a bit of nourishment!

I just returned from a walk on the Boardwalk (actually concrete) and the Chamber of Commerce really improved the scenery! Perhaps it is the weatherman that has more to do with that!! The beach is fairly active this year as compared to the barrenness last year. It's in the 70's here today and a nice Easterly breeze.

The military jets are flying overhead and I do enjoy them! I really don't know whether they are F-15's, F-16's or B4's ... but seeing them fly gives me the goosebumps!

I did see C.J.'s win this morning ... he looked impressive in the beginning but started to fade. His opponent tied it at 5's late in the third but with 3 seconds to go C.J. earned the escape!

More later!
Wow. That West kid has won his 1st three matches:

16-1
20-4
16-0

Tie your shoes up tight, CJ!
Juniors:

Wrestleback
112 Jordan Grey, VT vs Tyler Stokes, KS Winner Stokes 8-1
Sounds like the shoes were tight but offense was hard to find, CJ comes up short 0-3 to West from CA…
I can not find where there is a link to the weight brackets in the Nationals Websit..so when they post the Seniors Bracket, please put the link on here. I am watching for updates, I am glad someone is right there reporting things as they happen. Thanks for keeping us informed of the matches coming up and the results as they happen. Good Job.
It looks like CJ Napier won 7-4 in his first match on the backside to insure a top 8 finish at Junior 135! After winning one match on the backside, Tyler Stokes lost on a DQ. Any details?
At least some of the seniors are currently on an aircraft carrier. I guess they are enjoying a little sight seeing before the wrestlng begins tomorrow.
Hello All ... CJ's loss was a defensive struggle both tried attempts at the takedown but didn't score. His opponent opted down to start the 3rd, CJ immediately cut him. Valiant effort but a loss just the same!

Sorry, I did not see Tyler's match!

CJ was fairly convincing in his win that guaranteed him All-American status!!

All the Seniors made weight and are just waiting for the competition to begin at 10 am (edt)!

The Elvin's and Gary Ulmer joined Kathy Jo and I for an evening meal at Beach Bully's Bar-B-Q! For Virginia ... it was pretty good chow!!
C.J. Napier lost his 10 pm match to a State Champ from New York. In the first period of tie-breaker, Napier was in control for 25 seconds and then gave a reversal. C.J. had a chance but the New Yorker was riding. The New Yorker, earned a stall warning and a subsequent stall point. But gaining the 2nd stall point was too much to ask!!

Napier wrestles for 5th later today!
Jacob Wagner of Manhattan has had to withdraw due to an injury! My information is that he previously injured his shoulder and tweaked it again!!

Wrestling has now begun!!
Aaron Arb used his great mat skills to win his opening bout, 9-4. Arb from Labette County HS used a couple of reversals and near falls for his scoring!

Joey Hambleton suffers a 2-5 loss. Joey was victimized by a couple of takedowns.

It looked bleak for Sabetha's Jordan Meyer! With 0.10 to go in the first period Jordan was trailing 0-7. He must have found a can of spinach in his singlet because he was a different wrestler from that point on! Jordan wins the match!!
Collin Hase was in control of the entire bout! No doubt more control than the 4-1 score might indicate!!

Dodge City's Jesse Barber looked great ... Barber wins by a major decision!

Taylor Dwyer fights valiantly but loses, 0-3.

Jordan Keller (my roomie) is never in jeopardy and pins!
Posted By: chewie Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/28/08 02:42 PM
Looks like a good start so far.
Nathan McCormick gives up a reversal to his back in the second period and a takedown with back in the 3rd to lose. McCormick loses to Hohbein of North Dakota, 4-11.
Randy…
REALLY appreciate you taking the time to keep us updated back here in KS. They are taking so long to update the brackets on the website, you guys will be home doing laundry before we know what happened…Please keep up the good work!!!
Noblet?
Thanks ... and that is another plug for TrackWrestling! With TW often times it is the other way around!

I am trying to keep track of 12 mats from my computer on the floor of the arena! I will try ... but of course I can't cover all our wrestlers!
Noblet will be up in two ... on a mat I can actually see!
what about tanenbaum?
Tanenbaum v. Schultz of Wisconsin! Scoreless 1st period. Tanenbaum on bottom and earns the escape. Tanenbaum on the attack and with 0.15 scores a takedown and Schultz takes an injury timeout. Tanenbaum wins as the medical advice is Schultz can't continue.

Noblet v. Oliver! Oliver with the takedown. Oliver gains a 2-point tilt and a 3-point tilt. The combatants are neutral and Oliver again with the takedown and cuts Noblet. Takedown and cut by Oliver. 2-12 going to the 3rd and again the wrestlers are on their feet. Oliver with the takedown and Noblet with the escape. Oliver with the takedown and cut. Finally Oliver with the takedown to make it a technical fall over Noblet!
Kevin Callihan?
Sorry ... didn't catch Callahan's match!
Isenberg v. Schumaker, OH.

Aldon with the early head-and-arm for a 4-pointer and the Buckeye gains the escape. Aldon with the fireman's for 2 and Buckeye earns 1 and a takedown. Aldon with the reversal. The 1st period ends 8-4. Aldon selects neutral! The Buckeye with the takedown, Aldon's escapes and throws the head-and-arm. The 2nd period ends with Aldon up, 14-6. The Buckeye comes close but Isenberg with the 19-13 win.

Aaron Arb pulls out a 6-5 win with a tilt with less than 0.05 seconds to go!
Kim Callahan let me know that Kevin won by fall over Georgia wrestler.
Posted By: ksbevo Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/28/08 04:21 PM
how did Mitch Arnold do ?
Jordan Meyer picked up his second win, 9-2!

Mitch Arnold (my other roomie) v. Nelson from Ohio. Mitch is an explosive athlete with tons of quickness. Mitch put those tools on display in the first two periods. Mitch faded a bit in the third but won, 6-4.

Pete Tapia earns a fall in his opening bout!
Can you keep us posted on what match number they are on. How did Nick Peterson do?
Darrell Melcher?
Marvio Tischhauser was in control, 9-5 but got reversed to his back to tie it up! With 3 seconds left, Marvio earned the escape and win!!
I didn't see Peterson or Melcher ... sorry!
I just talked to Darrell, he lost 9-3.
At this National tourney they assign bout numbers to certain mats! This makes it a bit hard to follow. For instance right now we have one mat on #233 and another #360!

Todays bouts will all be front side matches! They will wrestle out to the round of 16.

Matt Baker (189) is up in 5 matches.
Testing, testing ... 1, 2 ... Houston we had a problem ... but it seems I have a connection again!

Scott Elliott was dominant in his opening bout!
That is 5 matches on his mat!! Yes, Matt is coming up and so is Zlatnik!
Let us rossville people know how Zlatnik does.
Matt Baker lost 10-6 to Bell from Michigan.
Posted By: ksbevo Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/28/08 06:04 PM
Has Jordan Keller wrestled his 2 nd match yet ?
Matt Baker battles but loses, 6-10.

Duane Zlatnik wins 9-5!

Jesse Barber wins 4-1!
Did Barber beat Pat LeVasseur? He was a Minnesota State Champion!
Yes!!
Randy, This is Joe Zlatnik. I am substitute teaching at St. Marys High School. Any details on Duane's match? This is killing me?
heard duane won 9-4
Duane was fairly dominant! As the match went on, he got a bit sloppy and gave up a takedown but was never in jeopardy!!
... now get back to those kids Joe!!
Jordan Keller throttles another ... 12-0!
have them doing their reading haha. thanks!
Posted By: ksbevo Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/28/08 06:48 PM
and your other roomie ?
Posted By: Bobs Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/28/08 06:51 PM
Nick Peterson (Abilene) defeated Daniel Iribe from Arizona 12-8
With 0.20 to go in the bout, Mitch Arnold was tied at 2. Arnold exploded for the winning takedown!!

Kevin Callahan takes a 7-4 lead into the 3rd period. With 1.06 his opponent opts to put then on their feet. His opponent attempts a throw but Kevin counters for a 2 and 2. Kevin Callahan wins 12-5!
Kevin defeated Ryan Leonard of Montana who is reported to be a 4-time State Champ!
THANKS RANDY YOUR DOING A HECK OF A JOB!!!!
Sam Thoman loses 2-6.

Nick Peterson loses 2-7.

Pete Tapia loses 0-3.

Aaron Arb wins 4-2!

Scott Elliott wins 8-4!

Aldon Isenberg wins 6-2!
Posted By: ksbevo Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/28/08 07:36 PM
how many have made it to the round of 16 ?
... I'm not sure but 10 or 12 by a rough count! There are a few wrestlers that I don't know the result of their last bout!

I am sure we will have a full accounting later!!
Posted By: ksbevo Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/28/08 07:41 PM
Would like to THANK YOU for the nice job you are doing. Your efforts are very much appreciated. keep a tight reign on your roomies.
Just got a call from pops. Apparently Duane got a full ride scholarship offer from Rockhurst, who my dad thought was based in New York, after his first match.
Marvio is up! He gives up a takedown but quickly earns the escape! Marvio must be wrestling a lad from Texas as Kenny Monday is in the corner! Marvio throws for 2! 1st period ends with Marvio ahead 3-2. Marvio gains the escape. The second period ends, 4-2. The Texan opts down and quickly gains the reversal but Marvio gains an escape. The Texan gets a takedown. Once again, Marvio with the escape. With 0.24 left, the Texan is lifting Marvio but Marvio scrambles and gains the takedown. With 0.11 left Marvio cuts him and gets on his bike! Marvio gives up a warning and a point but wins by 1.

Atticus has had to wait all day long and apparently it didn't set well with him. Atticus is ahead 10-2 and then pins his foe!
LOL ... my wife is in charge of that!! It appears, she definitely has her bluff in!!!
Jordan Meyer got handled 4-20.

Collin Hase lost, 0-12.
Any Waunita sightings in the Virginia Beach area Randy? I am worried that she will take offense with your better half present with you and may mount an aggresive attack. I know the phermones of young heavyweight wrestlers has definitely attracted her East. Now that the Swayz is a bethrothed man, she may be setting her sights creating a super genetic beast with Disney or Zlatnick as unwilling donors.
Alex Munoz, from Dallas, is a kid that Kenny Monday has been coaching in his ELITE wrestling club and training since he was about 10 years old. He has gone to many many National Championships and wins most of them. If you go to YouTube and put in Alex Munoz in the search video line, you can watch Munoz wrestling as a JR. against a Sr. from Georgia in the BIG OHIO IRON MAN CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP match at 160 pounds. Munoz is a very experienced wrestler in NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS and very strong and fast. He was ranked 3rd in Texas as a JR. and I think that was too low, because he won the Texas State Championship as a JR. Alex Munoz had to be a favorite to go very high in this tournament.
Duane Zlatnik takes his turn! He is facing a wrestler from Michigan! Duane with the arm drag for 2, Michigan picks up a stall warning. In the 2nd period, Zlatnik opts bottom. Duane picks up the stall warning. Late in the period, Duane gains the reversal to take a 4-0 lead! Michigan opts top and Duane doesn't waste anytime and gains the reversal. Duane earns a 2-point nearfall. Duane gives up a stall point with 0.22 left. An angry bear then quickly turns his foe and earns the 11-1 win!

Bob Doxon lost his match to an extremely athletic wrestler from Pennsylvania. The score, 5-15.
The following wrestlers are onto the round of 16:

Jesse Barber
Jordan Keller
Kevin Callahan
Aldon Isenberg
Aaron Arb
Mitch Arnold
Marvio Tischhauser
Scott Elliott
Atticus Disney
Duane Zlatnik

Overall it was a pretty good day today! Let's hope for a better day tomorrow!!
Posted By: ksbevo Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/29/08 12:03 AM

Tell your wife how much we appreciate her watching over your 2 roomies. They need it. Ornery
no cotton, patterson, or keller? some of our best staying home?
Yes, they are missing out but ... it's all good!

The Chamber of Commerce must be closed because the weather has turned absolutely dreadful. There is a 20 mph wind from the Northeast!

We are making a bit of a splash in the team scores! New York is leading with 77. Missouri in 9th with 56.6 and Team Kansas is in 10th with 56!
... and Good Luck this morning to all the competitors in the USAW Kansas Kids Championship!!
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/29/08 12:23 PM
Keep them focused Randy. As I understand it team scoring is done by taking the highest scorer from each state at each weight?
Barber loses 0-3.

Keller wins 5-2!

Callahan is pinned by a foe from Pennsylvania.
It's pretty rough sledding!

Aaron Arb loses a decision.

Aldon Isenberg loses 1-4.

Mitch Arnold is pinned. It appeared to be a quick call by the official but Mitch was clearly in peril.
Joey Hambleton endures a 1-6 loss which ends his venture in this tourney.

Phil Witt of Leavenworth HS is dominant in his mat skills. Phil stays alive with 13-0 win!
Ben Davis loses to end his tournament.

Marvio Tischhauser wins 11-7!!
Scott Elliott wins a squeaker, 6-5!

Atticus Disney wins big,18-7!

Matt Noblet wins 3-2!

Duane Zlatnik gets taken down but reverses his Jersey opponent to his back and Zlatnik with the pin!
Steven Miller loses, 4-6. Steven a Manhattan High product is out of the tourney.

Nathan McCormick wins 12-3!
Jordan Keller advances on the front side, 7-1! That puts Jordan in the semi's!
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/29/08 02:29 PM
And guarantees Ks and All-American! Go Jordan
... and that is BIG!
Darrel Melcher traveled to Virginia Beach from Herington, Kansas. He goes home with a loss by fall. Regardless, Melcher is still a Kansas State 3,2,1A Champ!!
Mr. Disney, I am sure you would agree that there are two KS 285ers that I would love to see join Jordan in the semis!
Levi Whitley is on his way back to Concordia. He lost his second match but the experience of the journey will be valuable.
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/29/08 03:31 PM
Wouldn't that be great? Hard to do any work waiting for matches to come in.
I hear ya, I need to be writing a paper but I am right back on here 5 minutes!
Did I miss it or has anyone posted the site for the senior brackets? I saw the underclassment, but no seniors. I tried to look them up on trackwrestling, but didn't see them there either.
Thanks
What a match!! Marvio Tischhauser was matched against a foe from Florida! Marvio took it to him! Marvio was leading after the second period but "hit the wall" in the third and suffered the loss by fall.

Zlatnik and Disney's matches are coming up!!

It was posted on another thread!

This site is doing updates pretty quickly. But we still need Randy to give us the details:

Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/29/08 03:40 PM
Atticus has the guy he wrestled in semis last year. It is on Flowrestling if anyone wants to see
Agreed Mr. Disney. The brackets are nice to get a big picture view of how the kids are doing, but I really enjoy Mr. Hinderliter's updates and commentary on the matches.
I am worried about the Maresh kid DZ is paired with. Pretty athletic!
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/29/08 03:49 PM
The Minnesota site said he has trouble w/ big guys so maybe?
I hope so. I watched him on flo and he had a nice sweeping outside single.
Scott Elliott was in quite a battle. The score was tied with 10 seconds to go in the bout! With 4 seconds left, Scott gave up a takedown. Elliott loses, 8-10.
Elliot was match 800, heavys getting close...
Duane got his butt handed to him.
Phil Witt battles but loses.

Duane Zlatnik battled Sam Maresh of Minnesota. The Gopher was equally as athletic as Duane. He built up a lead with a series of takedowns and tilts before he pinned him in the third.

Collin Hase wins his bout!

Atticus Disney loses, 2-5, to Randy Colling of New York.

Phil Witt is out of the tourney; Zlatnik, Hase, and Disney are still alive!
Matt Noblet suffers a third period pin.

Jake Tanenbaum makes a comeback but it is a bit short. Jake loses, 5-6.

Both are great wrestlers that will continue their careers!
Has Baker wrestled yet? He had a bye this morning and then was facing a 2 3 time CT state champ.
Abilene's Nick Peterson has had a stellar career. His next bout is scoreless heading into the third period. Nick gives up an escape and a takedown. Nick is out of this tourney, losing 0-3.
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/29/08 04:52 PM
Randy - I liked you a lot better yesterday
In the semi's ... Jordan Keller is matched with Frank Cimato from PA. The score going into the second is 1-2. Jordan opts down and earns the escape. The score tied at 2's going into the 3rd. PA takes down. They exchange reversals and it's overtime!!

Still nothing decided!!! Jordan earns the escape!! But PA does too!!

Jordan with the ride out ... and the WIN!!!!
Man ... I am still shaking!! How thrilling for Jordan Keller but also for Team Kansas!!

Now ... we need to get a few more through into the AA rounds!!

It is funny how things like that happen!! I've spoken with the Jubster a few times at the Kids State Championships and he has said the same thing!

However, he did like the phone call telling him we had a National Finalist!!
Congrats Jordan! What a stud!

Sorry, sometimes these posts get lost in cyber space!! Matt has not wrestled yet!!
Jordan Meyer takes his turn! He gives up a toss with back-points to trail 0-5. Jordan gains an escape but gives up another takedown. Another escape ... but another takedown. Jordan gets caught in a Granby roll. Jordan ends his venture at the Beach, 2-14.

Sam Thoman is next! Sam scored the takedown and locks up the cradle. Sam tries to dive over the opponents back but gives up the reversal with 3-back points. The second begins with the score, 2-5. Sam is on top. An escape for the foe. In the third, Sam opts down and quickly gains the escape. Sam loses by decision.

Both Jordan and Sam have had outstanding scholastic careers and today they come to a close for this folkstyle season.
Matt Baker from Shawnee-Mission East HS wins, 5-1 to stay alive!
It's Bob Doxon with the win by pin!

We're starting the next round of consolations!
Collin Hase advances with a 6-2 win!
C.J. Napier finished 5th in the Junior division of this tourney!

FYI ... the heavy-weight that Zlatnik lost to ... lost in the Semi's to Ziad Haddad of Pennsylvania. The wrestler Atticus lost to had advanced to the finals!

There are two, 5-time State Champs in this tourney!
We are coming into a critcal time ... in determining if our wrestlers will All-American!

We have 13 wrestlers still alive!!

Jesse Barber
Collin Hase
Jordan Keller
Kevin Callahan
Aldon Isenberg
Aaron Arb
Mitch Arnold
Marvio Tischhauser
Scott Elliott
Matt Baker
Atticus Disney
Bob Doxon
Duane Zlatnik
Jesse Barber made a good showing but is eliminated with a 2-4 loss.

Bob Doxon with the 6-1 win!!
Kevin Callahan takes his turn! At the end of 1, we are scoreless! Kevin opts down, earns the quick escape and the takedown. His foe escapes. He gives up the takedown and the 2nd period ends, tied at 3. His foe opts bottom and is allowed to escape. Kevin loses and his bid is over. Kevin returns to Baldwin City having had a good performance in this tourney and an record setting career in Kansas!
Collin Hase's chase in Virginia is over. He loses 0-4.

Aldon Isenberg keeps on the winning track!

Mitch Arnold wins 3-2!

Aaron Arb made quite a showing in Virginia but it too, comes to a close.
Matt Baker's tournament comes to a close with a 2-3 loss.

Bob Doxon's tournament also comes to an end.
One more round in today's session ... let's hope the rest will be competing tomorrow!
... and down goes hope!

Isenberg and Arnold both lose.
The only wrestlers still in the hunt:

Jordan Keller
Marvio Tischhauser
Scott Elliott
Atticus Disney
Duane Zlatnik

That's it for today!
Are the all of the remaining five All-Americans or are their more rounds to go?
Everyone except Jordan needs to win one in the morning!
What was stokes DQed for?
Good Morning!

In the Championship finals Jordan will face Nico Cortese of Pennsylvania!

The following need to win their first round match this morning!

Marvio is wrestling Mike Gresh from New York!

Scott Elliott had drawn California's, Jake Meredith!

Zlatnik has Harry Turner from New Jersey!

Atticus is pitted against Mike Horton from PA!
Team Kansas is now in 9th place! We have 91-points which is half a point in front of Missouri!!

PA, NJ, and MI are the top 3!

Once again, that link is: http://teamchamps.pawrsl.com/NHSCA/2008_Seniors.pdf
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/30/08 12:29 PM
Randy - Can you give me an estimate on when Atticus will go?
Marvio is going right now ... probably within 30-45 minutes!
They are already posing the 140# matches, and using 8 mats, so Marvio should be wrestling now, and they will be coming along in about minutes Mr. Disney. That is my estimate.
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/30/08 12:37 PM
Moving right along then
in about 15 minutes..I think
Marvio with the takedown! He gets reversed to his back and pinned.

So close ... Marvio had a great showing!!!
Zlatnik with the PIN!
Atticus wins 15-2!
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/30/08 12:53 PM
Better make sure they have it right. The website is showing Dwayne GOT pinned.
... details will follow!
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/30/08 12:57 PM
They advanced Turner and not Duane
Zlatnik was tied at the end of the first! In the second he scored the takedown and quickly moved for the pin!!

Atticus used a couple of blast doubles with back-points to dominate!
Scott Elliott loses, 2-7.
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/30/08 01:00 PM
Make sure they correct the scoring. I am in a hotel in Western Ks and I can see they screwed up. Technology is great.
... I just past the word to Rob Sherrill who is checking it out! But Duane won!!
Good catch Barry!!! They made the correction!
Posted By: Disney Re: LIVE ... from Virginia Beach ... it's the - 03/30/08 01:09 PM
I just hope I don't have to come down there
LOL ... it wouldn't be the first time you've had to rescue either me or a tournament administrator!!

They have moved the tourney down to four mats for this session so it will be a bit easier to track!

I've gotten accustom to having more than one match going at a time. It was difficult trying to position myself where I could see Scott, Duane and Atticus who were wrestling at the same time!
Atticus is wrestling Nick Cook of Virginia!

Duane has Brett Correll of Michigan!
Duane Zlatnik is up!

A few attempts but scoreless after the first! Duane selects down. 0.51 stalemate. Nothing after 2. The Michigan lad chooses bottom. In the third, Duane gets reversed to his back and pinned.

Duane will wrestle for 7th!
Atticus takes his turn!

Atticus scores a 2 and 2 with a headlock. VA gets the escape. The period ends 4-1. MI elects down. Atticus picks up the stall warning but ends the period. Disney on bottom quickly earns the escape. Atticus controls the mat and wins ... 5-1!
Atticus will wrestle Maresh of Minnesota who beat Duane yesterday!

Duane will wrestle Cook who just lost to Atticus!
Disney is up!

Scoreless after the 1st. Maresh earns the escape from bottom. Maresh with the takedown. Atticus is on bottom trailing 0-3. Atticus gains the escape. Atticus with the double leg to tie it up! We are going overtime!! Dang it ... Maresh with the takedown.

Atticus will be wrestling for 5th!
Atticus will compete against Johnny Hiles of Ohio.

The story amongst some is that Maresh has signed to play football with Minnesota! I imagine their paths will cross again. Further, that he will be playing linebacker!! I would hate to be a running back against him!!! (of course I would hate to be a running back against anyone)

Actually he is signed to play for Minnesota
Atticus is up ... wrestling for 5th place!

Hiles with the takedown but Disney quickly gains his feet. The period ends, 1-2. In the second, Hiles opts down. Hiles gains his feet. Atticus scrambles for the takedown as the period ends. Disney on bottom but Hiles puts them on their feet. Both wrestlers have previously given up stall warnings. Atticus controls the center of the mat and wins!

Atticus Disney is your 5th Place finisher and an All-American!
Duane Zlatnik is scoreless after the 1st period. Cook opts down. Duane with the hammerlock! Cook picks up the stall warning as the period ends. Zlatnik takes down and earns his feet. Cook scores the takedown at the edge of the mat. Duane ties it up with an escape. 0.39 left! OVERTIME! 0.20 left! Zlatnik picks up the stall warning. Still tied up! Duane is on bottom and gains his feet. Cook is on bottom. Zlatnik with the ride out!! Duane Zlatnik takes 7th.
That's it for now! Jordan Keller is wrestling in tonights session which begins at 6 pm.
I have been reminded … reminded of the tremendous impact the sport of wrestling can have on us all!

As I was leaving the arena after this morning session I happened across three men, sharing similar thoughts. They weren’t sharing in a typical fashion but they were sharing in their individual solitude … sharing the same emotions.

First there was the father walking a few feet from his son. He was biting his lower lip. I could see the pride in his face. He had watched his son grow into a young man. He had prepared his son for the journey.

Next there was the high school coach. He couldn’t speak … as he was choked up with emotions. He had spent hours in the mat room encouraging this young man. He had helped to develop both the physical as well as the mental tools it would take to survive.

Then there was the young man. A few minutes earlier, he was thanking those around him for everything they contributed in his life. Now, he sat in a corner chair, at the edge of a wrestling mat. The same mat where he had probably wrestled the final match of his career. The emotions of the moment had overcome all three men.

I am not positive what any of the three were thinking. But I imagine that their thoughts were of closing a chapter. I wish I would have had some magical words for the three. But I didn’t … and probably, I couldn’t share them if I did because of my own emotions.

Often in life, we don’t recognize when one chapter ends and another begins. However, this time it was clear. I trust the young man will embrace this next chapter. And his father and his coach will find some solace in knowing … they have prepared the young man for the path!
Thanks Randy, what a great wrestling senario.

Ms.Jenni
Great thoughts Randy! Thanks!
Team Kansas is now back in 11th place with 99 points. Missouri is 10th at 103. New Jersey, Michigan and Pennsylvania are leading the way!

The All-Americans are staging, getting ready for the parade. The NHSCA Senior finalists, including Jordan Keller, are warming up!
Jordan's opponent is Nico Cortese of Murrysville, Pennsylvania. He had a Senior record of 46-2 and a career record of 157-16. Cortese is a 4-time State placer, finishing 5th, 2nd, 6th and 3rd.

He is a signee of Duke University where he will wrestle. He graduated from Hampfield Area HS with a stellar 4.0 average! He is a member of the National Honor Society, on the schools golf team, and loves to cook!

Keller is from Bishop Carroll HS in Wichita. He was 38-0 on the year and 138-25 for his career. He placed 3rd as a sophomore, and was the State Champion as a junior and senior!

He has committed to wrestle for Cleveland State University and also takes a 4.0 gpa with him. He is a Kansas State Scholars award recipient and also a State qualifier in Tennis.

Jordan's twin brother John is also a 2-time State Champ!
The preliminaries and introductions are about over! We are close to wrestling!!
At 103-pounds, the champ is Jesse Meis of Colorado with a 19-5 major decision win over Jeremy Gendreau of California!

At 112-pounds, the champ is Joseph Langel of New Jersey with a 6-4 decision over B.J. Futrell of Illinois! Some would consider this an upset!!
Keller v. Cortese! In the first, both wrestlers are battling for position but they are even at 0. The choice at the end of one goes to Cortese. Keller picks up the stall warning. Jordan is riding tough and has Cortese dodging bullets. The period ends and we are still scoreless. Keller is down but works for the escape. Jordan Keller is your National Champion!! Jordan wins 1-0!!!
Jordan Keller becomes the first National Champ in this tournament since Scott Coleman won it about a decade ago!
The play by play that they're doing online was a bit shakey at the end of the match. Can you tell us how the match ended? Sounded like there was a bit of a flury and someone was close to scoring, but missed who it was and how close it was to a score.

Thanks
Cortese was close to gaining the takedown but Jordan hung on for dear life!
At 125 it is Scotti Sentes of Florida with the 8-2 decision over Chris Albright of Pennsylvania.

At 130 the winner is Jordan Oliver of Pennsylvania with the convincing and dominant win over Derek Reber also of Pennsylvania. Oliver by a 19-4 technical superiority!

At 135, representing Ohio, it was Chase Skonieczny with the win over, Michigan product Mark Weber, with a 6-4 decision.

2,638 ... that is the total number of matches wrestled in the Senior division of this tournament!
We move to 140 where Jason Chamberlain of Utah, a 4-times State champ, tallies a 21-5 technical fall over Tee Edwards of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

At 145 we have one of the more anticipated matches of the night. On the mat it was Mario Mason of New Jersey with a solid, 9-2 win, over Vince Ramos of Illinois

At 152 it was Josh Condon of Georgia with the 6-5 decision over Tyler Johnson of North Dakota.

Next at 160 it was Scott Winston, with a 137-0 career record, of New Jersey over Steve Bosak of Pennsylvania. The score, 6-0.
Congrats to Jordan Keller!
At 171-pounds, it was Ben Bennett of Michigan over Hunter Collins of California with the score, 7-2.

At 189-pounds, it was Oregon's Ryland Geiger over Missouri's Brent Haynes with the win. Geiger by a defensive fall. He was leading 11-6 at the time.

The 215-pound match would be decided in overtime! We had Marcel Dubois of Michigan and Travis Pettengill also of Michigan. In fact the match went to the tie-breaker portion. Pettengill was on bottom and trying to gain the escape when he screamed out in pain! He sucked it up and continued!! Marcel with the 30 second ride. Marcel on bottom and is allowed to escape. Pettengill tries the throw but Dubois counters. Dubois with the win!

The grade point average for the final 28 competitors is a remarkable, 3.31!

At 285-pounds we have Ziad Haddad of Pennsylvania winning the 4-3 decision over Randy Colling of New York.
Congrats to all of the Kansas Boys. Jordan and John Keller are two tough kids that I am especially proud of, a national champion is something special.
Kansas crowns one National Champ, Jordan Keller! And two other All-Americans, Duane Zlatnik and Atticus Disney!

But I must say to all of Team Kansas ... you guys were all tremendous! You are class acts and truly supported each other! You had tons of fun and enjoyed each others company. I hope all you realize that!

And what a fine group of parents too!

I will share more but we have a team meeting in 10 minutes ... I shouldn't be late!!
God that was just awesome to read! Felt like i was there! Thanks Randy.

PS. The saying(or something close) I have learned through being on this forum, "Let us prepare our kids for the PATH and not the "path" for our kids" has been a life changing quote and I thank u for it. I loved it when u talked about what u saw with the father, the coach, and the wrestler. Thank u Randy.
Wow,

Congratulations to Jordan Keller National Champion!!!!
You've represented Kansas well, and are a testament to just how tough Kansas Wrestlers can be.

Same goes for all the Kansas wrestlers representing down there. Duane, Atticus, congrats to you as well.

Randy, thank you so much for the updates, I have been following the last 3 days and its been a real pleasure.
Thanks guys! At times I wonder whether anyone back home it "watching" but I know that you are.

As I look back, I am filled with emotion from the past few days! First, the anticipation of experiences to come, the hopes of the athletes, the uncertainty of doubt, and whether expectations can be filled.

So many of the worries have been taken care of by the Elvin's and Gary Ulmer and I hope they know how much that means to all of us. At least we were returning to familiar ground for some of us!

I recognize that there are a few of you back in Kansas who wished you could be here. I hope through these reports I can ease some of your worries.

The young men were here to wrestle and over all they did that well. I have to feel for Jacob Wagner who couldn't compete because of an injury. And I have to be so proud of one that accomplished his ultimate goal. Jordan Keller was able to achieve what 28 other Kansans had dreamed of.

Most have already left and on there way back to Kansas. The rest of us, leave in a few hours.

I am hearing reports of some pretty severe storms so I hope all are safe!!

Just terrific. You have captured it perfectly. You should write an inspiritational book on the wrestling experience.

Excellent reply to Randy's post. That is a great thought for parents. It is not an easy thing to do but I believe it is the right way to parent. Thank you for that reminder.
Congratulations to all these seniors including many who did not wrestle in this tournament and their families. You are an extraordinary group of wrestlers who have great wrestling skill and character. You had excellent family support. You had great high school careers. Good luck in your future endeavors and I hope you all will continue to have great success.
Not to sure if anyone has posted this site yet but you can watch the matches from this tourneyment online.

I had the honor and pleasure of attending this years Sr. Nationals and I had an unbelievable time. The Kansas wrestling family made me feel welcome and a part of the team. The wrestlers represented our state, both on and off the mat, with the highest degree of sportsmanship and goodwill.
The tournament was a great learning experience for me, and hopefully I can pass along the lessons to the wrestlers in our program.
To all of the coaches, the Elvin's, Deyoe, and Randy, thank you for putting togather and participating in such a fine event. Without your efforts, this trip would not have been as fun and smooth operating.
To next years seniors, I challenge all of your to dream big and work harder than ever, and hopefully you can represent Team Kansas next year.
