103 lb bracket is up and seeding meeting continues - stay tuned!
http://www.gckschools.com/schools/gchs/wrestling/wr_results.htm
Wow at #103 only two athletes that have losing record. the Dodge City wrestler is tough and right out the gate he is has a tough bout. Good luck to all the wrestlers in this tournament. Former GCHS wrestler 1969-1972 RMG
They have been done seeding for awhile. Anybody else getting updated brackets?
Nope! I know that Moeder got seeded 5th after talking to Tim.
No, still showing 103 as the only completed bracket. Seeding was done before 11
I heard that also. That is a comedy. Moeder pins Salas last year and Salas gets the 2 seed and Moeder gets the 5. If you are giving weight to last years placing at Garden City, you certainly have to give weight to last years head-to-head! Whomever got that one through has to be laughing that they actually bought it!
It all goes back to using some common sense at the seeding meeting. Now Moeder will face Pena in the quarters instead of the finals!
They worked hard to ruin that bracket. I heard that the head referee was leading the seeding meeting. Interesting concept!
Where is the head ref from? Mars perhaps?
Having a referee conduct a seeding meeting actually takes any local bias out of it. I don't know what the criteria is, but it is usually state finish first. Who placed higher at state? If you get away from criteria, and place last years head to head above state, it would take an hour a weight class to seed this thing. It will all work out.
He should have taken his hospital gown off at least.
4 and 5 seeds are not that bad if the competitors are pretty even. Good time to see where you stand with 1 seed in the semi-finals - assuming 4 or 5 and 1 make it there.
They are underway with pigtails

Moeder should have been the 2 seed. Again, how do you disregard head-to-head in favor of weighting last years GC tourney finish against a kid that didn't even wrestle at that tourney?

They both finished 3rd at State. It takes 5 seconds to say, "Moeder pinned Salas last year". It will not all work out. Either Pena or Moeder will not wrestle in the final.
Results from magnum811 would be quicker.
It is kind of sad that I can get a text from 272 miles away faster than they can update from the site.
Matt
Called GC district office and told of problems, got transferred to Ath. Dept. Got recording. Listed complaint. I know they have already done some 119#.
Look to the west. Smoke signals coming soon.
At 112, Moeder wins 7-4. Antillon beats Salas 2-0.
At 130:
SEMIS:
Ryne Cokeley 28-1 vs. Dan Frank 28-2
Louis Trujillo 36-1 vs. Rylan Dalke 15-1.
Each match is different, it is another day, regardless of ranking, record or size of school. A wrestler with a record of 20-2 just lost by a score of 18-2 to a wrestler who had a record of 8-2. Wrestling is a combination of mind, strength and skill. Some days they don't always come together at the right time.
Don't blame the one who lost. No, doubt he gave his best today but it wasn't enough.

Seaton gets a TD at the buzzer to make the semis!
Upset of the day Dakota Hayes pinning Jake Snider of Ponderosa at 140. WOW! Did he just catch him or was this a legit pnwing? Could somebody give a recap? Anything? That just ruined the Reno Finals Rematch with Ortega for Snider unless Donovan Archuleta pulls off an upset of his own in the semis.
Pretty nice win for Peak of Emporia over Newell at 152.
The deal with wins against an opponnet early in the tournament they may see each other again if the other guy loses in the semi's. That will make the rankers crazy with who beat who and by what score next week. One match at a time fellas.
Just looking at the results, seeding, and records it looks like Scott City is wrestling out of their UNITARDS today. First Antillon gets a minor upset by beating Salas 2-0 at 112. Contreras had a close loss to the #2 seed at 125 in Seaton. Stucky advances to the semis at 135. At 140 Dakota Hayes pulls off a monumental upset by not only beating Snider but pinning him. Morgan Numrich at 145 beats #3 seed Jake Hattabaugh 3-2 for another semifinal qualifier. Chaston Hoeme is also doing fine at 171 making his way to the semis. Luke Hayes gave the #2 seed a scare at 189 losing 5-3 to Nathan Heuer of Reo Rancho. Putting them in third place behind the likes of Rio Rancho and Roosevelt. But, just as impressively ahead of Emporia, Canyon-Randall, Andale, Liberal, and Ponderosa. Looks like the Beavers could be a force to reckon with at the 4a tournament this year. Beware of the trucker cap and unitards Kansas and out of state wrestlers.
I agree. Got the same report from GC that Scott City was making a splash out there.
I have to say that it DID WORK OUT at 112. #5 seed Taylor Moeder beats #1 seed Tony Pena, 7-5! He was up 5-1 and moves into the finals at 112. Wow!

Looks like the out of state teams are goin' to sweep the team trophies. It's too bad the other top teams like Goddard, Clay Center, Colby, Wichita Heights, Smith Center, Derby, Bishop Carroll, or Andover Central don’t attend this tournament…More specifically I wish Goddard hadn’t stopped going to Garden City.

Rocky Welton Invite expanding in 51st year

Braxston Medina remembers sitting in The Garden, watching the high school wrestlers competing in the Rocky Welton Invitational. Now, it's Medina's turn to be on the mat in front of the crowd for this year's Rocky Welton on Friday and Saturday.
"I'm pretty excited. But pretty nervous at the same time, too," said Medina, a freshmen at Garden City High School. "All the talk about it, how it's a big tournament and how tough it is. I'm pretty excited because I'm a freshman getting to wrestle in the invite. I've been watching it since I was five-years-old. So I can't wait."
Medina, who is ranked No. 4 in the 130-pound weight class, sure picked a year to compete in his first Rocky Welton. The invitational has grown so much that for the first time ever, the 51st annual Rocky Welton will be utilizing both the competitive and practice gyms at the high school. The first two rounds on Friday and Saturday the 103 to 145 weight classes will be held in the The Garden, and the 152 through heavyweight divisions will be in the practice gym.
"We've been talking about that for several years and have been looking around at other tournaments that we go to where they wrestle in two gyms," GCHS coach Monte Moser said. "So this year we're just going to move the upper weights for the first two rounds each of the days and kind of take care of those big rounds."
The tournament will consist of 26 teams including nine schools from Colorado, one from New Mexico and another from Texas. There will also area teams Holcomb, Hugoton, Scott City and Ulysses along with all the Western Athletic Conference schools competing.
"It's a big, loaded tournament," Moser said. "There's probably some tournaments in the country that are tougher, but I don't think there are any in Kansas that are tougher. We've got one weight class where two kids wrestled in the championship in Reno, Nevada before Christmas, they met again last week at 'Top Of The Rockies' and each time had a different winner. So they are coming here to try to settle the score for the season. They are from two different states, and they are the top wrestler from each state. So I'm hoping we can get into that mix and mess it up for them."
And Garden City has just the wrestler to mess up the potential rubber match. The weight class which Moser was referring is the 140-pound, the division in which GCHS junior Joey Dozier, currently ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, competes.
"I'm nervous just knowing who's in my bracket," Dozier said. "But once I get on the mat the nerves will just go away and it's just all adrenaline that I've got to base it off of. I've got to take it one match at a time and I know that if I get to one of them it's going to be a tough match. It's going to come down to whoever's doing their best and whoever's on top of their game."
Preliminaries begin Friday at noon with the semifinals scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. Consolation rounds will begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with the championship finals slotted to start at 6 p.m.
There will be two duals tonight at 6 p.m. featuring teams that will participate in the Rocky Welton — Canyon Randall (Texas) will dual with Rio Rancho (N.M.) and Conifer (Colo.) will face Garden City.

Goddard stopped coming to protect their national ranking. It's not like they've got anywhere better to be. But if they come they'll get beat by unranked teams.

I wanna see Dalke vs. Cokeley in the 3rd place match... and what is with Fulbright from Maize at 152 knocking off the 1st seed two weeks in a row?

Seriously? You really think rankings mean that much? You've beat this dead horse for four years. I don't coach anymore, but I believe the reason Goddard doesn't go has more to do with budget and the fact that so many two day tournaments were taking a toll on the wellness of the wrestlers.
I'd say that you don't know Coach Means if you think he cares about rankings, but since you are not willing to post your name, maybe you do know him and it's personal. Ponderosa is a great team and probably deserves a national ranking, but you need to give the crying about Goddard a rest. Rankings mean nothing, much like anonymous posts.

Well I think if I said my name it wouldn't ring any sort of bell with a single person in Kansas, so what's the difference?
The only two times Goddard came to this tournament they got stomped by unranked Ponderosa. Rather than drop out of the rankings, they contacted Bob Preusse (the guy who does the AWN rankings) to explain why they had lost so badly. I know because Bob Preusse told so. Then they just stopped coming to this tournament altogether.
Being ranked in the country should be a real honor for a team, and I hate seeing Goddard in the rankings when I know they don't belong and never have. They haven't beaten anyone and now avoid the best tournament in their state. How is that supposed to look? I can guarantee that someone in the program is still talking them up to Preusse though, otherwise he would have never heard of them. Why would he? They haven't beaten anyone and don't go to any high profile tourneys.
Edit: No, Ponderosa absolutely does not deserve a national ranking and that's not the point I'm trying to make.
The KCI tournament Goddard goes to at the beginning of the year is a much tougher tournament than Garden City with many national ranked teams, so if all Goddard cared about was protecting their ranking why would they go there?
Parker is experiencing Goddard envy. With Ponderosa having 6 wrestlers under .500, he is feeling a bit defensive. Goddard would have had 5 finalists with at least 3 Champions. Their 40 pounder was owned by Caldwell in 07 and there is no wrestler on their team that deserves a ranking higher than Caldwell or Beard. I know he was discounting his Ponderosa team but to make the point, Goddard would beat them 12 weights out of 14 in a dual. I think that phone conversation with Bob Preusse didn't go quite the way you think Parker.

I hate that I've been drawn into this, but you are wrong about a few things here. You see, Parker, I was the coach of Goddard the first year that Ponderosa whooped us. Let me give you some history. The first tournament of the year we beat then #7 ranked Bishop Lynch. They did not have all of their guns at the tournament, but after the tournament Bob Pruess ranked Goddard. No phone calls were made, but I did get an e-mail asking about the team after the ranking. I did not lobby for any ranking, but I did give him info on some of our kids. That was the last contact I remember having until after the season ended. I did give him information on what was coming back the next year and he must have thought that they deserved some respect. If you're so tight with Preuss, you tell me why he would rank us. I don't know the man, but I imagine he had a reason.
As for getting whooped...yep, Ponderosa beat us. Did we have some of our guys sick or injured? Just two that I recall, but Ponderosa may have been depleted too. You see, they were better than us. We don't make excuses or cry on the internet over stuff that is out of our control. I don't like to see our student-athletes and school being attacked by someone that is not dignified enough to put his name on the board. I won't argue that Goddard deserved/deserves a national ranking, because it means very little. I will dispute your "facts" though. As stated earlier, Goddard wrestles in the Toshiba in KC. They also see great competition in several other tournaments. We have two DI signees and a DII signee and a bunch of other great kids that wrestle hard all of the time. Why don't you contact me personally if you would like more information.
were are the national team rankings at?
Amateur Wrestling News online
The whole idea that Goddard needs to be defended on this forum is Rtardid. Goddard has nothing to prove, they already have proved it. They easily bested Oklahoma 6A top 5 powers Stillwater and Yukon at the Ark City tournament. They were 6th at the Nationally recognized KC National Classic barely finishing behind top Oklahoma team Ponca City. Although they did place behind Missouri power Blue Springs at KC, they did best them the previous week in a dual. They are obviously not scared of high quality competition. If they were trying to "protect their ranking" they would not have gone to KC. They also attend Basehor which is no slouch and has Iowa and Missouri teams. Noone needs to call AWN, as Bob is always watching. This is not the first time that Goddard has been nationally ranked either and it should be no suprise that they are ranked now inspite of there absence at Garden City. I can guarantee one thing for sure and that is that Goddard is not concerned with national rankings. They are only concerned with high quality competition that gets them ready for the 6A state tournament. That is why they have one of the toughest schedules in the state, inspite of the fact that they do not go to Garden City.
I wrestled this weekend at GC and was wondering where Jace Banner of GC was? Does he not wrestle anymore. I was just curious.

I thought I saw his name a few weeks ago listed in the tournament results for a KC tournament with his school listed as Van Horn High School.
