I would just like to thank the refree that did the Woten/Caylor match for kicking out Woten for cussing after he had just lost a match that would have sent him to the finals in his Senior year. I really don't understand why a kid would be emotional at all after a match like that. Thank you for the bogus fleeing call and stalling call that handed Caylor the match, and sparked the emotion. Thank you for leaving a lasting impression on a 17 year old that will never wrestle again in his life. A 17 year old kid that has wrestled since 5th grade and had never been kicked out of a tournament. Thank you for making his mom cry all the way back to Olathe. Thank you for not throwing another 215 pounder out that threw a punch, because cursing is a much more serious offense! What a great job you have done for the sport of wrestling and you certainly showed your authority.
The Junction City 215 pounder should have been in the finals anyway. He chased the guy around the entire semi final match and couldnt get stalling calls. The refs at the STATE TOURNAMENT cost alot of kids matches this wknd. Shouldnt be that way.
So cursing gets you thrown out, but throwing a punch doesn't? If that's the rule, it needs to change. A wrestler punched his opponent last year at state and didn't get tossed either. I don't get it.
Cursing should be unsportsmanlike conduct NOT flagrant misconduct. It sounds like, without knowing the officials side of the story, that an official was overzealous and decided to abuse his authority. It seems to happen more often in the post season than the regular season...
and it cost this young man (a senior no less) his place at state.
another one of those great officials being inconsistent. i agree officials work hard, but discussing what is allowed and what isn't should be discussed before the tournament. sorry guys sounds like someone blew this one.

The involved referee assessed two post match unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and stated at the tournament scorer’s table he was giving the wrestler an early Christmas present by not kicking the wrestler out of the tournament. A high school athletic director, who was one of the tournament administrator’s, overheard the statement and asked me if that was the correct call. I informed the athletic director the rule book is clear, it states in the penalty section two post match unsportsmanlike conduct penalties is flagrant misconduct and the penalty is disqualification from the tournament, loss of three team points, and loss of all earned individual team points. The Athletic Director asked the official if he had checked the penalty chart (twice), and after NO reply I stated apparently not. After a conference of officials, the head official approached the scorer’s table and provided the correct ruling. It was not until the following morning I reviewed the bout sheet, which had numerous official notations, that I saw the curse word written on the bout sheet and was able to determine why the unfortunate wrestler was disqualified.
It was a very unfortunate ending to a young man's high school wrestling season.
What does the rule book say about punching an opponent?
So let me get this straight, was it the curse word that drew the 2 post match unsportsmanlike conduct penalties? just one curse word or did he go on a cursing rant? How can something that happened AFTER the match affect a match that has already ended? What types of behavior warrant post match penalties? I'm not taking sides either way here, just trying to understand the ruling. I for one, am a big believer in the "Win like a champion, Lose like a champion"
And who was it that supposedly threw a punch? that to me would seem like grounds for DQ
It was the end of his career. Not his season. His last match ever will be remembered not because of glory or disappointment, but because some refree blew a bunch of calls and then got his fellings hurt when he was questioned. Wrestling refs are the biggest babies in sports. When they are wrong, they never try to make it right they just go on and hope that the problems go away. You would think people that officiate such a tough sport would have thicker skin.
A Goddard wrestler punched his opponent from Junction City. And it wasn't "supposedly" because I and many others witnessed it.
What does the rule book say about punching an opponent?
SECTION 12 FLAGRANT MISCONDUCT

ART. 2 . . . Contestants:
a. Flagrant misconduct is any physical or nonphysical act which occurs before, during or after a match considered by the referee to be serious enough to disqualify a contestant from the match and any additional wrestling in a multiple school event.
b. Acts include, but are not limited to:
1. striking;2. butting;

A Godddard wrestler did not punch his opponent. He did punch towards the mat, not at his opponent. It did get him an unsportsmanlike penalty (which I agree was the correct call). If he would have hit his opponent he would have been kicked out. Please get your story correct and post your name if you're going to post such accusations.
I guess it is "supposedly", because now someone else is saying that it didn't happen, and the Goddard kid was not DQed, so what I believe is that it didn't happen.
I saw the wrestler throw a punch at the other wrestler (not the mat); this wrestler was then examined by a trainer. The crowd watching it reacted very negatively; it wasn't only me who saw it. The point I'm trying to make is why wasn't this wrestler disqualified? The rules need to be enforced consistently.
Looking at the brackets, even if the Goddard kid had been DQed, it wouldn't have had any effect on the outcome of the bracket, Knudson still would have been in the 3rd place match and Hicks would have DQed to the fifth place match against the previously DQed, Woten.
It was the end of his career. Not his season. His last match ever will be remembered not because of glory or disappointment, ...,
I concur and this is nearly my exact statement when discussing the matter.
,... but because some refree blew a bunch of calls and then got his fellings hurt when he was questioned.
The match occurred directly in front of the scorers table and I watched this bout as I am from the Wichita area, I know the Wichita NW coaches, and due to my geographic location, was biased toward the Wichita wrestler. With no disrect intended, I did believe the Wichita NW wrestler was clearly the aggressor and felt the stalling call against the K.C. area wrestler was justified, and was a little late in coming. There were flurries and scrambles from both wrestlers and it was an outstanding match.

There are many, many excellent officials involved in our sport from all corners of the State.

Because he DID NOT hit him. I won't argue your perspective of if it was going at the other wrestler. We'll have to agree to disagree. If the official thought it was intended to hit the other wrestler, he probably would have rightfully kicked him out. Obviously he did not. I don't recall why the other wrestler was looked at by the trainer, but I will tell you this; I had a very good view of the "punch" and it did not come close to the other boy. Your point is taken, but it is based on an incorrect assumption of the event.
you know this was a great tournament and we witnessed many situations in fact I wished I could caught the flying headgear that was launched by the disgruntled wearer. anyway if this would have been the first time I heard woten talk this way I may feel sorry but this seems to roll of his tongue quit easily. happy trails young senior.
Im Gage Knudson i was the guy who got punched in the head or the neck i really dont know if Josh Hicks really did it because i was so hyped up if he did it doesnt matter cuz i still won the match
You don't know if you got punched???
Please clarify!
Gage he was just bummed because you are going to own him all next year! Congrats on 3rd place and good luck next year.
well let's just say his mother didn't cry all the way home. brute nationals is april 2nd it would be great if you joined us, only met mr. knudson once this year lookin forward to more visits. great job on your 3rd place.
You don't know if you got punched???
Please clarify!
He already did:
"... because i was so hyped up if he did it doesnt matter cuz i still won the match."
Whoops. That is more why he DIDN'T CARE. I guess he was so hyped up one wouldn't feel it. Or, he thought it was a head butt, or a push, or - a girly-punch that didn't matter/hurt him, or something else. Bottom line, he didn't care because it obviously didn't hurt (much, Gage is a hard-headed football player!) and he obviously won the match - THEN see his quote above.
GO GAGE!
Dean Welsh - your former PE teacher at FK - now solely at SH
Well I think saying someone is going to "OWN" someone else when they have only seen each other once and it ended in OT is a pretty premature statement.
Will Gage be attending Brute Nationals?
This is to take nothing away from Gage and his well earned victory. This is in reference to the stupid comment that he would own Hicks next year.
And I would still like to hear from HIM as to how he doesn't remember being "punched".
Everyone is making a big deal about it and I would like to hear Gage's HONEST thought. And I understand being sooo hyped up it wouldn't effect you but you would still know.
girly punch? and your a teacher? underpayed I'm sure. this topic is gettin old . wrestle or shut up!
I did make a error.
Hicks did not lose to Gage in OT. If I remember right..
They both lost to Bullis in OT. & their score was like 11 to 8.
girly punch? and your a teacher? underpayed I'm sure. this topic is gettin old . wrestle or shut up!
My pay is fine. However, you might want to work on your capitalization.
Gage only lost to Pearch not Bullis. All that matters is Gage got third and had a great tournament. The technical violation was for unsportsmanlike conduct for an extra punch or forearm shiver as the wrestlers went off the mat. I was right next to the mat and it was very clear that this was done out of frustration. Gage was oblivious to it as he was just focused on winning and nothing else. Who knows what will happen in the future, but the match belonged to Gage in a hard fought victory.
Thanks Thompson!
I again I goofed.
Like I stated before...
Not to take ANYTHING away from Gage. He was the better wrestler during that match.
My frustration was to the PREMATURE comments of domination that came from other unenlightened people.
After Coaching Jake Woten for the past 4 years I feel it is only fitting that I comment on this topic.
First I want to start off by saying that our program does not condone what happened this weekend. I do however; think that the punishment was a bit harsh. I do realize that rules are rules and that we do have to live with the consequences of our actions. I feel that the main problem here is consistency. I have witnessed on several occasions this same type of behavior from many athletes and witnessed it several times Saturday after the fact. Maybe I was looking extra hard for it but who can blame me there. I also noticed other actions (some mentioned in pervious posts) that seem worse that what our athlete did and have seen ejections overturned in years past.
Wrestling is probably the most emotional sport I have ever been involved with as an athlete and a coach. It is sometimes hard to keep the emotions in and after the state semifinal’s it is really hard.
After having a couple of days to reflect on this I become angrier about the situation for a few reasons. Number one, it ended a kid’s career without him even knowing it was coming. He never had a chance to prepare for his last wrestling match ever. Also, I feel bad for his parents who have supported him in this sport for the past 8 years and didn’t get to prepare for the last match of his career. I feel bad for his teammates/friends that had to deal with this and try to compete at their best for the rest of the state tournament and for everyone that invested time in making him a better athlete/wrestler over the past 8 years.
I know there have been comments about how this young man may appear on the outside. I will say this about him. For those of you who want to hold an opinion of this young man, I am sorry you didn’t get a chance to know him like I have. I won’t say that he hasn’t caused me my share of grey hairs over the past four years but I am glad I had the chance to coach him and better yet get to know him as a person. He is extremely competitive and he sometime lets that show but that is no reason to hold an opinion. He is only a 17 year old kid. I think some of us forget how we were then. I have no doubts that he will learn from this situation and go to do good things.
Thanks for the memories Jake!!!
Coach Larson
Well said Coach Larson. Jake Woten is a solid human being and a great competetor. It was horrible to see his season/career end the way it did.
I am really impressed with how mature he was with the whole incident. He was on the floor, being a good teammate and leader, handling it the best he possibly could on Saturday.
I want to echo Coach Larson's comments. I have known Jake Woten for 4 years and he is a good young man. He is emotional and very motivated and I was sorry to hear of his DQ. Right call or wrong call, it was not the right thing to do and I think Jake would admit that. This should not diminish the career of one of Olathe's best ever wrestlers who is also an all-state caliber football player.
Tom Williams
Why not wrestle Brute Nationals? I know its not the same but at least he and his family will get that "last match" feeling.
A high school athletic director, who was one of the tournament administrator’s, overheard the statement and asked me if that was the correct call.
Why is a Athletic director/tournament ad getting involved in the officials scoring or calls??????
Well said. I believe even last year an apparent ejection was overturned. Any time a wrestler is not able to finish their year on the mat it is unfortunate.
I wish Jake could have finished out on the mat.

Well,
If he was a Tournament Administrator, that is his job. He may have been trying to make sure everything was going right. Or, perhaps he is a wrestling fan too and wanted to know if that was the right call rather than start yelling like an idiot or get on a blog site and hammer away like a moron.
I'm not on anyones side here BUT I officiated many years & in many big tournaments..And I wasn't there, but sounds like to me that the kid that lost said some curse words after loosing the match..So what! Unless it was just plain out screaming and throwing a fit, i think it was the wrong call..
im gage and i plan on wrestling a brute i have won it the past two years
I don't know what was said. When I offiicated, if the wrestler said a few curse words after losing a match I could live with it if i) it wasn't directed at me and ii) it wasn't so loud that everyone in the place heard it.
If the cursing got him 2 unsportsmanlike conduct calls one after another it must have been pretty abusive...the official could have looked at it as one continuous act...which would not have resulted in 2 UC and the DQ.
My guess is, and I think it was implied above, that the official may not have realized that two UC calls after the match was over results in a DQ. If had been during the match it would have been just a couple match points, no big deal. After the match UC doesn't happen very often...and no one likes to see a match/career/season, end this way.
hey this is Gage i was j/w who BLT was? because they asked if i was going to brute
