... it's the 2009 NHSCA Senior Nationals!
Well, everyone has arrived on the beach! Of course the young men are nervous about their weight. We have a couple of meetings scheduled to begin at 7 pm EDT!
It seems like familiar territory for me and such as it should. I will be heading over to the venue in a bit to see if any Kansas lads are wrestling in the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior divisions!
Weigh ins for the Seniors are at 2 pm Thursday and wrestling begins, 10 am Friday!
More later!!
ttfn
Wish I was out there! This should be a blast. Looking forward to your updates. They should dig your flowered Kansas shirt and shorts out there.
Me too! Probably not going to get much work done Friday anyway...Randy be sure and do some finger stretching before you start firing those updates back to KS.
This is no time for a typing injury!!!
is there a list of all kansas contestants.
(stretching done, thanks)
... 7 am EDT, wake-up call has been made to all the wrestlers and coaches. Team meeting in the lobby at 7.45. Then, we will assemble the troops and head over to the venue (about 1/4 mile) where Team Kansas will have their picture taken!
Then about 9 am it is a workout session for the wrestlers! Weigh-ins are at 2 pm. At 3 pm, a clinic by the legendary, Gene Mills and at 5 pm, a mandatory meeting.
I do have a decent digital camera this year so I will try to get some pictures. Our bus driver from the airport is predicting a great weather weekend!
My wife, Kjo, and I's roomie, Chaz Lawrence; is up and about, preparing the meeting (and Sharky Slyter will be joining us sometime today). I need to get everything packed up for a day at the Convention Center!
More later, ttfn
I will see you guys in 15.5 hours! Can't wait to watch our KS kids excell on the mat!
... the picture has been taken and the workout over! The guys have checked their weight!
what are everyones thoughts how this team should fair compared to the past years teams. I am looking at this list going wow. I got to watch many of those kids at the 5 and 6a state tournament and that is a pretty impressive list. Good luck to all you guys and bring back some hardware.
Are the brackets posted anywhere?
My opinion ... this is a stellar group of athletes and would rival some of the best team Kansas has ever brought to the Senior Nationals.
I would like to see 18-20 All-Americans, hope for 10 or 12, and realistically 6 to 8! Always, it is about how the boys compete on the mat; can they keep their focus, can the wrestle to their abilities?
Windham, Ornelas, Callahan have a good shot! I am interested to see how Sharky handles the tourney. If Chaz Lawrence can get his offense going, it should be fun!
Others, like Weigel from Plainville and the Colby clan of Arnberger and Kriss could see themselves on the podium.
Everyone has to avoid the hidden landmines that are randomly placed. I recall years, where 4-time State champs from Kansas, did not All-American at this tourney! However, if C.J., Caldwell, Maple, Detmer, Nelson, Beard ... wrestle well, they will challenge for the top of the podium!
Stokes and Vesta will be factors, Cox and Means will be contenders. Peters, Jesseph, Lynch, Crank could surprise a few. As will, Peoples, Zahorsky, Fullbright, Van Holland, Bortz, Gutirrez, Feldcamp, and Nathan Sommer. And clearly Worrell, Marrs, and Kriss will also be warriors!
24-hour until Showtime ... everyone has a shot. That's the nature of the beast. But as I suggest, there some bear traps hungrily waiting!
I have reviewed the entries for the Freshman, Sophomore, and Juniors ... I find that Kansas has no entries!
Just curious, how do they go about seeding this tournament. Natl ranking, Fargo?
Interesting you ask! I am sitting next to Rob Sherrill, of W.I.N. magazine, who is responsible for just that duty!
Past Fargo results, major tourney's, etc. go into their seedings. Also they try to separate wrestlers by State when they can. But as always, it is an art not a science!
For instance, when he went to seed 135 ... he ran into the Maple and Napier dilemma. If I recall, he seeded Kendric 3rd and C.J. 7th. At this level of event, they also look at the top wrestlers not only meeting in the finals but he looked at the quarters!
The wrestlers in the end ... will decide it!

When will brackets be available online?
I have reviewed the entries for the Freshman, Sophomore, and Juniors ... I find that Kansas has no entries!
Randy, Breck Amberger, KS listed in the Juniors bracket at 171...shows as a DEF and FOR.
typo?
it tough to say "Who you think will all american here" because you dont wanna leave anyone out. I say the best sr wrestlers in kansas (abd i said this last night in a discusions with the bros) Caldwell, Napier, Beard... All American wise... Umm, Caldwell, Napier, Beard (more than likely) Windham (depending on kids) Callahan and Ornellas (yes but only one of them) Vesta (depends) Sharky (if he gets on a roll) Chaz (Hopefully) Crank (possibly) Maple (yeah) Detmer(yeah) Nelson (i heard he was way out of shape) Means(possibly) Cox(ya)
I havent seen Trent wrestle in forever, I remember my junior year i thought he was the best on the scene at 103.
Thats all... good luck to all.... wrestle hard
This is Church Jr. under my fathers name. We had a great work-out this morning as the kids looked great and very crisp. I am very excited too see these boys on the mat. We did run into some trouble today as someone stole my fathers wallet and he is out a very large sum of cash and is cards and Identification. I hope he can at least find the wallet somewhere because getting on an airplane without ID is going to be a rough road.
Anyway, Looking forward too some good times. Weigh-ins is an hour or so!!!!
Church
Brackets will be posted some time after weigh-ins, probably late this evening.
Yes, Breck Arnberger was a misprint as Seniors have not wrestled yet!
And I agree Brandon ... it is tough to say! To steal a bit from Coach Renfro, we will do alright, as long as we, T.C.O.B.!

i will say that seeding wise... I say Caldwell, Napier, Maple, Beard, Nelson, and Detmer are the only ones i can really think of who will get seeds....
I remember my class, (2007) was loaded, I mean we had Paulie Hansen, Aaron Ely, Dooley, Bahe, Almageur, Mamie... All those good guys, and no one did it... I think if you could cut for this event it would be better, I mean Aaron would of gitten to 125, and he woulda done darn good. ANYOTHER YEAR, paulie would of all americaned but that year 119 was ridiculous... I mean Nikko Triggas, Tyler Clark, Zach Sanders, Bedolyon... Wow... that was tough... but its just draws, but its like that at every national tournament... If you get a good draw, you could all american, or you could go 0-2... I look forward to hearing how these young men do...
This tournament is a real eye opener for most of Kansas wrestler, parents and fans! It is all about the size of the fish tank we live in!
If you haven't got the message yet, Kansas ... here it is! In the past we have had some pretty good wrestlers in OUR fish tank ... and they have flat been eaten alive by sharks from another tank.
In the big wrestling world, Kansas is not in the top 5 as a State! (I know this sounds like our old friend, gutwrench) In fact, State-wise, we probably fall in the area of 8 to 12! We do have a few individuals, that if they have a great tournament, will place. We have 2 or 3 that even could be in contention for a National Championship such as Jordan Keller from Bishop Carroll earned last year.
A couple of years ago ... Kansas had ZERO All-Americans! There will be in this tourney several 4-time State champs, a flock of 3-timers, but the 2-timers and 1-timers, are wrestlers that won't even draw consideration for seeds!
California could have a wrestler, that placed 7th at their State championship, win it all! A 4-times from Utah may go 0-2!
Luckily I have something else to do for awhile ... ttfn!
The wallet has been found and returned in tact!!
Everyone made weight ... at 3 pm ... there's a clinic!
Keep em coming looking forward to following the results
The wallet has been found and returned in tact!!
Everyone made weight ... at 3 pm ... there's a clinic!
Why do I feel this was my kids wallet? Tell me was it Mitchell?
The wallet has been found and returned in tact!!
Everyone made weight ... at 3 pm ... there's a clinic!
That is character at it's finest. Do you know who found it? They deserve some public thanks.
I am not sure but I am sure that the junior Coach Church will make a post about his father's found wallet!
At 5 pm, we have a mandatory meeting at the venue for coaches and athletes. Curfew for minors is 9 pm in Virginia Beach!! Probably a good thing!
I might be making a post from the Hotel later but for now ... that's it for the Wednesday action (or lack thereof) at the NHSCA Senior Nationals!

ESPN AND THE NHSCA TEAM UP FOR BREAKTHROUGH NHSCA SENIORS FINALS BROADCAST ON ESPN360.COM
EASTON, Pa. – The production and broadcast teams are set for the first-ever live national broadcast of the 20th annual National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships presented by the U.S. Navy, which will be produced by the NHSCA and aired on ESPN360.com.
ESPN’s Quint Kessenich will provide play-by-play announcing and Jeff Blatnick will serve as color analyst. Marty Ehrlich will serve as Executive Producer for the event, and Chris Lincoln will direct the event. Both have over 20 years experience producing major sports and entertainment events around the globe.
Kessenich has covered wrestling, college and professional lacrosse, basketball, football, track and field and horse racing for the ESPN family of networks as a commentator and sideline reporter. A former All-American lacrosse goalkeeper, Kessenich attended the Johns Hopkins University from 1987 to 1990, and has covered 15 NCAA lacrosse championships as ESPN’s TV analyst. The native of Lynbrook, N.Y. also wrestled and played soccer in high school.
A gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Blatnick has become a renowned wrestling color analyst, working on Olympic, collegiate and high school wrestling broadcasts nationwide. He has appeared as an analyst on ABC, ESPN, Madison Square Garden Network, and Prime Ticket Cable. He also is one of the nation’s premier motivational speakers. Kessenich and Blatnick recently were part of the broadcast team for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which also aired on the ESPN family of networks.
During his career, Ehrlich has held lead roles in the production of the Tour de France, the National Hockey League, college football and basketball. Lincoln has produced and directed many sports and entertainment events, including the National Hockey League, college basketball and the America’s Cup.
"We’re very pleased to have assembled a telecast team with the experience and the credentials of Marty Ehrlich, Chris Lincoln, Quint Kessenich and Jeff Blatnick," NHSCA executive director Bob Ferraro said. "This is a historic opportunity to acquire nationwide exposure for the NHSCA and for high school wrestling’s signature event. The opportunity to work with these consummate professionals will make this a historic and first-rate broadcast."
The telecast will air live on ESPN360.com on Sunday, April 5 from 7-9 p.m. ET, and will be followed by a 30-minute highlight show that will air on ESPNU in July.
Over one-fourth of the 2,628 wrestlers who are registered to compete – more than 700 in all – have won at least one state championship during their careers, and more than 1,300 are state placewinners.
"Our collaboration with ESPN360.com is a huge step forward for the NHSCA," NHSCA founder Bob Ferraro Sr. said. "This is a unique opportunity to bring the finals of the Senior Nationals, the nation’s most prestigious scholastic wrestling event, live to our loyal wrestling fan base. We’re very excited to bring this outstanding event to ESPN360.com."

The finals featured an outstanding field, including five two-time state champions, seven three-time state champions and three four-time state champions. The 28 finalists combined for 51 state or National Prep Championships titles in their careers.
The National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships is open to any high-school senior wrestler who has been a finalist in his high school state tournament or the National Prep Championships, with several wild-card entries through a petition system. The National Juniors, Sophomores and Freshman Championships are open events, with any wrestler eligible to enter at his grade level. Great line-up! GO KANSAS!
Hinderlighter,
Kit Harris was looking for a few tips on how to enjoy the sights and sounds of Virginia Beach. You are in charge of filling my position of activities director while I am here in Kansas. By the way I really hopes it rains on you guys the whole time, its snowed here today and I was angry with the fact you could see the beach!
But in all seriousness go out there and leave it all on the mat. You never know what might happen...just ask Jordan Keller! And remeber "27 for life"!
Good Luck Kansas
Coach Brown
ps.No skim boarding lessons this year.
Would like to know when brackets are posted , thanks.
... we are ready to roll and start the NHSCA Senior Nationals! One the partners for this even is the Navy Seals!!
I will try to update you on several matches. Some matches I will just tell you wins and losses others I will have a brief narrative.
If I recall from the past, the NHSCA does a pretty good job updating brackets but those updates are a bit delayed.
They've just announced to clear the mats!!
First bracket I decided to look at was 215 since that was my old high school weight....Tanner Kriss vs. Brandon Palik! Wow! Palik pinned #1 Orlando Scales at the Dapper Dan when I was back in Pittsburgh last month. Hope momentum is on Kriss side from the Beard match...could have 2 big wins in a row! Palik has committed to Drexel and was ranked 11th in the Nation at the time he pinned Scales.
I justheard from my brother and Caldwell won his first match
Yes, Tyler opened Kansas up in style! He was kickin' the dawg out of Georgian and pinned him in the third for good measure!
Jeff Vesta had a rough opening. After 2-periods, he trailed 2-6 and in the 3rd, closed to within two. He had the opponent towards his back a few times but couldn't break the plane. Vesta loses, 4-6.
Weigel took a loss by fall.
Sharky won a close one, 3-1!
Chaz was trailing 0-3 going into the 3rd but came back for the dramatic win, 5-4!
Peters lost in overtime.
Cox was working hard and earned the 3rd period fall!
C.J. had a tough one to start. At the end of the 1st, 0-0. C.J. opted down and couldn't manage to score. 0-0 going into the 3rd ... the Colorado lad opted down but C.J. signaled they were going to their feet. In the 3rd, Napier with a pair of takedowns and the win, 4-3!
Cameron Jesseph also won a close one. He did score a takedown in the first and came away with a 3-2 win!
Kendric was also in a battle! There are no "easy" or "warm-up" matches here!! Kendric took the early lead but the opponent went head hunting and had Kendric on his back ... Kendric trailed after the first, 5-6. After two, Kendric was ahead, 9-7. In the third, Kendric opted down ... during the period, Kendric stood up and the opponent hopped on ... Kendric staggered out-of-bounds and gave up a "fleeing" point. Kendric managed to hang on for the 9-8 win!
Linwood Peoples won his first bout by injury default. Linwood was leading 5-0 and was in on a double when the opponent suffered a broken ankle ... Peoples wins!
Zahorsky gave up a reversal with 15 seconds left to lose, 3-5.
Fulbright loses by fall.
Mitch Means loses by fall.
Hey Randy Curtis and I say good job, keep it up.
Zahorsky gave up a reversal with 15 seconds left to lose, 3-5.
Fulbright loses by fall.
Dustin had bad draw started off with the #4 or #3 seed. He gave him a real good match.
Good job indeed! By the way, you still got that lotto ticket Randy?
Lotto ticket, what ticket would that be?
Hey Curtis is Swayz there recruiting for Neosha??
The lotto ticket! The one that was in his trench coat pocket!
Oh I remembe that one. Randy make sure you let us know if Waunita shows up.
Hey Curtis is Swayz there recruiting for Neosha??
Nope. Coach Petterson is out there having all the fun. Swayz will be at Brute this weekend though.
I know this may be a long shot, however I thought I would try... My Mom left her Canon hand video camera in a black and white cab last night, if anybody found it please let me know. Thank you!
Okay, that makes sense, you going to Brute?
Nope. I'll be back in the big ole city of Wichita this weekend. Nobody ever takes me on any trips anymore
Randy,
Any news on how Nathan Sommer did his first match?
How about Detmer and Beard?
Nope. I'll be back in the big ole city of Wichita this weekend. Nobody ever takes me on any trips anymore
Come on out this weekend, working on the Cluck Cluck, and enjoying the day with a burn and garden work. As to a trip, ready to plan one, me and the misses are planning a good trip this summer, possibly Hawaii, Greece or Grand Canyon via train. It all depends, maybe even the gulf come on and those could be fun excursions.
In looking at the brackets, it is a shame some of these guys are on the same side, like Fieldcamp and Nelson, if they were to meet up it would be fun, but I kind of hope they don't. I remember in years past where matches like this occur on the backside and a teammate knocks another out of All American Status.
How about Detmer and Beard?
Just got a text from Windham they both won
First, Chase Nelson did not show up for his first match. He was matside 10-15 minutes ahead but then ... we don't have a clue!!!
Sommer loses, 8-13.
Worrell loses, 4-18.
Beard wins, 6-0!
Detmer wins by fall!
Caldwell has a convicing win ... 10-1!
Van Holland loses 3-7.
Darnel Bortz wins, 3-1!
Breck Arnberger suffers a loss by decision.
How about Windham? Did he win?
This tourney is in my estimation, a fairly well ran tourney. Of course if Kansas ran it ... it would no doubt be flawless!
There are 754 entrants from 47 States!
Mars was ahead but got a bit too cautious, got reversed and pinned.
Tanner Kriss could not muster any offense Palik and lost ... 2-9.
The 103 and 112 divisions have not wrestled yet!
Gutierrez won by decision 5-3!
Also in todays action, there will be NO consolation matches wrestled!
Roger shouldn't wrestle until tomorrow. They atre wrestling up to a round of 16.
Callahan lost 10-21 ... got taken down 9 times by a finalist from California.
ZeezDad Check your pm-mail
Gutierrez won by decision 5-3!
Congratulations, Luciano. Nice win.
Do they seed this tournament? That was sure a very tough first round draw for Tanner Kriss.
Looks like a lot the Kansas kids are getting some good first round wins.
Good to see Sharky back out there and winning like that.
CJ an 8-4 winner in round 2...
sometimes technology or the user has some glitches!!
Cox lost in OT ... 8-10.
Maple wins 11-3!
Detmer wins 8-2!
Cameron wins ... was ahead 6-5 when his opponent defaulted!
Colby Cranks loses.
I have reviewed the entries for the Freshman, Sophomore, and Juniors ... I find that Kansas has no entries!
It is difficult to get a student a pass to miss four days of school. Ryne would have loved to wrestle but that is just too many days off. It is confusing to me why a National Hish School Coaches organization would schedule an event that would require so many missed days of classroom time.
I cant believe Chase would not be in the gym to wrestle. If i had the opportunity he has i would be in that gym until its over.
But then again i'm not surprised by what happened lol.
... and when there are two events closer to home this weekend ...
... and Chase is alive and well (well rested anyway)!
Yeah i wanted to see him and Feldkamp go at it again. If Feldkamp looses then we just might be able to see it
I would much rather see Feldkamp WIN than to see Chase and Feldkamp go at it again...
That would be good to see Feldkamp get first and Chase get 3rd.
I wish them both the best of luck! They are outstanding wrestlers!
... and when there are two events closer to home this weekend ...
I am not sure what the second event is but my guess is that many of the freshmen, sophomores and juniors are wrestling at Brute Nationals in Kansas City this weekend. Both for the reason that Will stated about missing so many days of school and also for the cost savings factor.
Caldwell stays on the winning side ... 6-0!
Beard follows suit ... 11-1!
Feldkamp takes a loss ... 3-8.
Gutz takes a loss ... losing by fall.
Bortz wrestles well but loses ... 5-7.
Kyler with the 11-4 win!
I believe that wraps up the first day of competition at the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Tomorrow, the action starts at 10 am again.
The other event that was being referred to is the USAW Kids National Championships at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa (not exactly close, but a lot easier to get to than Virginia Beach).
I really wish Brute would have moved there tournament back a week so it was on Easter weekend and was not the same time as two other premier national tournaments. In years past Brute has been a very difficult tournament in the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshmen classes. This year’s event seems to have lost many of the better wrestlers who come for the high school division to Virginia Beach and Cedar Falls.
... and Chase is alive and well (well rested anyway)!
so what the .... happened I bet Church about blew a gasket

Moving it to a different weekend than Senior Nationals and the USAW Kids Nationals would be a good idea but I would not make it Easter weekend. I don't think you are going to attract as many out of town wrestlers on Easter weekend.
Good Evening All,
One correction, wrestling begins at 9 am tomorrow!
Front siders are:
Roger Windham
Kenneth Ornelas
Sharkey Slyter
Kendric Maple
C.J. Napier
Cameron Jesseph
Tyler Caldwell
Kyle Detmer
Boaz Beard
Steven Kyler
The day in Virginia Beach was straight from the Chamber of Commerce except for a fairly stiff breeze. My wife and I walked down to the Beach after wrestling and just got back to the hotel a few minutes ago. The Beach and Atlantic Drive were fairly busy and it was great to run into several parents, coaches, and wrestlers from Team Kansas!
Also I must report that there has been a bit of a contest amongst a couple members of the coaching. The score to date is RG 6 and AA 2 ...
Windham, Ornelas and Slyter all with big wins first thing this morning!
Sharkey wins was over a foe from Michigan who had 220 wins and 144 pins in his career! An takedown in overtime sealed the deal!
Vesta and Peters take their second loss and our out.
Weigel takes his 2nd loss.
Maple, Napier, and Jesseph all win!
Maple was down at the end of the 2nd, 3-4. He stormed back to 9-6 and hung on for the 10-8 win versus a Jersey boy!
Napier in the 2nd and 3rd opened up for a 6-3 win!
Cameron was in a 4-3 battle!
Detmer loses a heart-breaker, 2-3.
Steven Kyler was tied after two, 3-3. He opted to wrestle on their feet but what he didn't plan on, was being tossed to his back. Kyler loses by fall.
Tyler Caldwell gave up an early point for fleeing and another for locked hands. He went into the 3rd period trailing, 0-2. From bottom he reversed and earned some tilt points to win, 4-2!
Boaz dispatches another! Beard giving the 10-1 drumming!
Great job Z! I am trying to keep up but ...
Randy, all of us back here at home appreciate all your time and effort keeping us informed. Thanks
Thanks ...
Sommer won a decision!
Nelson, still napping, wins anyway ... 16-10!
Fulbright suffers his second loss.
VanHollard also takes his second defeat.
Roger Windham loses.
Kenneth Ornelas is in a tight one but loses ... 0-1.
Anson Worrell wins with a drama filled bout, 8-7!
Sharkey was leading, 3-1 after two, against Cox from Wyoming. With about 20 seconds, Sharkey who had been riding tough finally had to relent the escape but in doing so, gave up a head-and-arm to Cox. Slyter battles hard but loses ... 3-6.
So, to ask the obvious - Did Chase Nelson's 'nap' cause him to automatically go on the backside of the bracket?
What was the score in the Windham match?
Mitchell Means wins 3 - 2
Chaz Lawrence loses his 2nd bout.
Jesseph loses his first against Ortega from New Mexico.
Kendric dominated, earning a tech fall in the 2nd. It was 4-1 after one ... and in the second, it was a series of tilts!

John Lynch suffers his 2nd loss ... 3-8.
Tyler Caldwell was in a war. 0-0 after one ... Caldwell on top in the 2nd and with 5 seconds left, gave up the escape. Caldwell working from bottom ... with 27 seconds left scored the reversal. He hung on for the 2-1 win!!
Mitch Means came back to win, 3-2!

Nice catch Richard ... Caldwell gave up an escape late in the 2nd!

Darnel Bortz takes his 2nd loss.
Chase Nelson wins, 3-2!
Arnie wins 3-1!
Mars wins 7-2!
Gutz loses for the second time.

What could have been, will not be!
Kendric lost his semi-final bout against a New Yorker. Kendric tried valiantly but he could not muster any offense. Maple loses ... 2-7.
C.J. however ... is a finalist!! If you are going to wrestle Napier, you definitely need your lunch pail. A chap for New Jersey found it difficult. C.J. scores a pair of takedowns and gives two escapes and a stall point late. C.J. wins, 4-3!

Tyler Caldwell was facing Nicholson from Iowa. The first period ended with no score. Caldwell opts down. He was standing up and Nicholson went to a single leg which he tree-topped. Tyler was posting on Nicholson's head and face. The ref stopped the action and penalized Caldwell for hand to the eyes. Later in the period, Tyler earned the escape. Caldwell was on top and the score was tied ... 1-1. With about one-minute left, Nicholson escaped. Caldwell was trying for the takedown but Nicholson's defense was too good. Caldwell loses ... 1-2.
Trent Cox wins by pin! Trent was ahead in the 3rd by two and gave up a reversal. Then with 20 seconds remaining the opponent hung his head a bit and Trent went looking. Cox sucked him under and earned the defensive fall!

I hardly see how it matters.
Maybe others could learn from their mistakes.
Maybe others could learn from their mistakes.
Seems pretty simple to me ... don't break the rules.
Is Wrestlinspectat covering something up? It doesn't always have to Tyler's fault. I think it was a legitimate question.
Good Morning Kansas!!
It's about 15 minutes till the scheduled start time. The tourney must be getting smaller as in the venue, we have gone from 28 mats, down to 8.
Those still wrestling today are the best-of-the-best! I was having breakfast this morning with a couple of wrestlers, Bortz and Van Holland. A lot of what this experience is ... is the young men put all they have on the line!
Most of these wrestlers are not accustomed to, being "drawn" in and being thrown to the wolves the first match of the day. Plus, they need to be setting on go, the first match of the day, for 3-days in a row!
Windham wins!
Ornelas wins!
Slyter loses.
Roger Windham was scoreless after one and expertly rode out the opponent in the second. He earned an escape in the third to earn the win and All-American status!
Kenneth Ornelas followed the same path in the first two periods. Kenneth working from bottom in the 3rd earned the reversal late and allowed the escape. Kenneth wins, 2-1. Ornelas has also earned All-American status!
Sharkey's bid fell just short. After a scoreless first period, Sharkey opted down for the 2nd. He couldn't score and the opponent opted down for the 3rd. Sharkey signaled that the match would continue on their feet. He was close to secure the takedown but gave one late in the bout. Slyter loses, 0-3.
Jesseph's match was tied with 28 seconds to go in the match. Cameron came up just short as he gave up a takedown to lose ... 1-3.
Kyle Detmer was trailing after the 2nd, 0-3. It was a flurry of takedowns by each, scrambles, blood-time, etc. but the outcome, Kyle loses ... 6-9.
Boaz Beard earns the status of All-American. Bo had a takedown in the first, traded reversals in the second, and escaped in the third for the 5-2 win!
Roger Windham and Kenneth Ornelas both improve their placing on the All-American stand!
Roger rides tough!! He won a second match this morning, 1-0!
Kenneth used a pair of takedowns to win ... 5-1!
Boaz improves his status! Beard used 3 takedowns to win the bout 7-2!
Kenneth Ornelas will be wrestling for 5th ... he lost his placement bout ... 0-5.
Roger Windham will be going for 3rd! He won his placement match, 4-0!

Ornelas (AA)(at least 6th)

Kendric Maple does not let a dislocated thumb detour his quest. He wins, 5-3 and will be wrestling for 3rd!
Tyler Caldwell and Boaz Beard will be competing for the Bronze medal!
Tyler had a 3-1 OT win!
Boaz had a 5-1 win in regulation!
Team Kansas will have a very respectable six All-Americans!
Kenneth Ornelas will be vying for 5th; while Roger Windham, Kendric Maple, Tyler Caldwell and Boaz Beard will by challenging the best in the Nation for 3rd!
That will leave one to wrestle for a National Championship tonight ... C.J. Napier!
Sorry Barry ... caught your post late!! Yes, SIX All-Americans!
This group of Srs rose to the occassion. Who knew that last week at the Sr. Classic the Maples/Napier bout was featuring two of the top 4 kids in the U.S. at 135?
Boaz had a 5-1 win in regulation!

Whew ... that consolation round gets a tad busy when Team Kanssa has five young men competing!
Richard, yes there was an entry error!
Roger Windham scores a takedown with 4 seconds remaining in the overtime period and about 10 seconds later, jumps into the arms of his coaches!

Kenneth Ornelas III finishes 6th in the NHSCA Senior Nationals. Kenneth wrestles well but loses, 1-3 giving up a late takedown.
Kenneth Ornelas III is an All-American!
Kendric Maple displayed a great deal on intestinal fortitude. With 30 seconds, Kendic scores the tying escape and with 15 seconds left, scored the winning takedown. Maples gave a late escape but that would not change the outcome ... 3-2!
Bronze Medalist and All-American from Kansas ... Kendric Maple!

Tyler Caldwell is an All-American and your Bronze Medalist!
At 189 pounds Boaz Beard was dominant! You used a couple of takedowns and tilts to win convincingly ... 12-2!

Interesting observation if I read the brackets correctly. Beard, KS 189 going to Nebraska, wins 3rd place. Barrett, from Nebraska, 189, wrestling for 1st. Do not think they wrestled--must have been on opposite sides of the bracket. Wonder where Barret is going to college--surely he will wreastle!
Nasty,
I agree that was a great year. however, wresting in 1992 and wrestling now are a lot different. These kids are way better, this tournament is bigger, tougher, and BADA$$!!!
These men are legit.
Have a great day

I thought Beard was committed to Iowa State, but I could be wrong.
Probably me that is wrong!

Thanks for correcting me on Beard.
Matter of interest, do you know where Barretfrom Neb is going to school. Cn;t find anything on him on the Neb U wrestling page.
What did Stokes and the other kid do to get DQ?
The bracket says just Stokes got dqd.
I have also heard that beard is very good in baseball. It might be hear say but he is also thinking about baseball.
I don't know a thing about Barret. If you know his first name just put it in google and you'll probably find out the info you want.
IE. Pretend I want to know about a wrestler named Ricky Bobby. I would simply type into google like this:

It is winding down on the beach. I have sand in my shoes, have climbed the U.S.'s first light-house, watched a few hundred matches, and reported on 5 Kansas All-Americans!
But there is a bit of unfinished business! Will C.J. Napier be the next Kansas National Champion?
C.J.'s mother will be in the stands, as will his always present Grandparents, and a couple dozen team mates and other members of the Kansas contingent. In the corner, will be his proud father, Todd who will be assisted by the re-uniting of Columbus and Chanute. Yes, Andy Albright will be matside wearing Columbus red!
I can think of no more deserving person than C.J. and the Napier family! For a dozen or more years, I've gotten to watch C.J. compete from places like Wellsville, Kansas; Akron, Ohio; Las Vegas, Nevada; Fargo, North Dakota; and Virginia Beach, Virginia. And, his family has always been there! While I may not get to see C.J. compete over the next few years, I am certain that his family will.
He has a formidable task! His opponent will be Ian Paddock of Warsaw, New York; a small-town like Columbus, that has roughly 3,500 people. Paddock has over 260 wins in his 6-year varsity career and has signed with Ohio State University.
Now it is up to C.J. and he is ready to take the next step!
... and C.J. and the 135-pound class will be one of the first to wrestle!
They are getting ready for the Parade of All-Americans!
Randy, what weight are they starting with?
The order!
160...Yates, Michigan.........v...Nicholson, Iowa
135...Napier, Kansas..........v...Paddock, New York
119...Cox, Wyoming............v...Boyle, New Jersey
145...Clemente, New York......v...Napoli, Pennsylvania
171...Ruth, New Jersey........v...Lofthouse, Utah
285...McClure, Michigan.......v...Palma, North Carolina
125...Quiroga, Indiana........v...Garofalo, Virginia
215...Nelson, Minnesota.......v...Haschak, Washington
189...Barett, Nebraska........v...Borlie, Virginia
140...Ortega, New Mexico......v...Dake, New York
130...Shull, Colorado.........v...Goree, Oklahoma
152...Compton, Missouri.......v...Greisheimer, New York
112...Gambrell, California....v...Cabanas, California
103...Lyon, Michigan..........v...Hauser, Ohio
Why are they doing a jumbled order? I don't think I've ever seen a final that was like this before.
... and looking over that list, several finalists had matches against Kansas lads!
Nicholson put Caldwell to the back side. Cox put Slyter there. Ortega ... Jesseph. And as I recall a couple of those were fairly close bouts!
... I am fairly certain, it is for their live feed! They only have 2-hours of live broadcast!!
If you have internet thru AT&T you can watch it on Espn360 for free on the internet.
... and I can't receive the feed!! Also where I am sitting, I cannot see the mats!!
My coverage will be MUCH behind the live feed but for those of you who can't get the feed, I will do my best!
Right now, we are just killing time till 7 pm EDT ... they've had the parade, the anthem, and now the crowd is doing the wave!!
By the time they do start ... the fans ought to be in a lather!
It was really neat for the Anthem though. The U.S. Navy Seals have their promo stage set up and while a young lady from the Navy was singing, you could see an action video on the big screen!
I cant see anything yet just the Up Next - 7:00 PM EST - Wrestling: Senior National High School Wrestling Championships on the screen. I think as long as you sign up on espn anyone can watch it. You have to download the player but thats about it.
Could someone please post the link to this live feed.
Thanks
congrats to C.J. and team KS
Wow ... C.J. Napier is a National Champion! One more time in case you didn't hear me, C.J. Napier is a National Champion!!!
In the first, Paddock had the front head lock secured and was trying to run the corner. Napier did a great job staying square. Napier later countered Paddock to earn a takedown. Paddock gained his feet and worked for the escape. C.J. leads, 2-1.
In the second, Paddock opted down and again worked for the escape. The period ends, 2-2.
In the third, with about 1-minute C.J. earned the escape to go ahead 3-2. Both wrestlers were countering and shooting but C.J. was a bit too defensive for the satisfaction of the referee ... C.J. picked up a stall warning. Then, there was a re-start with 4 seconds to go and the ref awarded Paddock 1-point for Napier's stall as time expired.
Overtime! C.J. was in on his patented single leg and switched it off to a double leg ... he lifted ... he flared ... C.J. put Paddock on his butt then his back! C.J. earned the takedown and at least 2 for near fall!!!
C.J. Napier from Columbus, Kansas is your National Champ!!
Randy, thanks so much for the detailed description of the match. Makes me feel like I was almost there!
Way to go Napier!!!
Post match reflections!
C.J. Napier is sitting with his Mom and Grandparents and grinning ear-to-ear! Todd Napier was on the floor and accepting handshakes and even a hug or two!
Whether or not you agree with the stall call that tied the match ... C.J. got to decided it! Todd and I were discussing the match and how much C.J. enjoys wrestling! Next week he leaves for Vegas and the FILA Junior Nationals!!
I was giving credit to C.J. and his family for C.J.'s gpa with the travel schedule he has! Todd gives that credit to his wife!!
C.J. came down and joined the conversation. After a few hugs and such I was mentioning his double leg flare finish ... the year C.J. won the Cadet Nationals in Fargo ... he flared everyone!
Restarting with 4-seconds left C.J. did not think there was any way possible he would give up the stall ... but he did. In my estimation, the always calm and reserved Napier got a little bit pissed ... and moments later, let everyone know, without a doubt, who the victor was!!
Now that it is over.... I am kind of glad it went to overtime. Now know one can complain. CJ owns the title outright. Way to go!!!
Congratulations, C.J. Napier, the Cornhusker nation is very proud of you too!
It sounds like it was a job well done by all the Kansas seniors. Great finish to a great Kansas high school folkstyle year. Good luck to all our Kansas senior wrestlers as they move on to college next year. Those of you who wrestled in this tournament did Kansas proud.
I am going to say ttfn! Team Kansas has an awards ceremony back in the hotel at 10 pm! Of course the honored guest will be C.J.!
I also would be remiss if I didn't say what a great job Chuck and Cherie Elvin, along with Gary Ulmer do in the planning and managing of this trip! No other State has the camaraderie and organization Team Kansas has ... and that credit goes to the Elvin's!
Wish us all safe travels as it suppose to be snowing in Detroit, where are connections are for tomorrows trip home!
See you all in Kansas!
Congrats to Roger Windham I wish I could have been there for you sorry I missed it also good job Feldkamp. Good luck in your future.
Congrats to CJ and the rest of Team Kansas. You did us proud and you are a great bunch of young men.
Randy, THANK YOU for the wonderful job of making all of us back here at home feel that we were right there you.
Enjoy tonight and safe travels home.

Just a little update. In addition to winning the national championship, C.J. Napier was also declared the Outstanding Wrestler!!!

I would like to second what you said about the Elvins and Gary Ulmer. They do a wonderful job. What they have done for Kansas wrestling is great, and it is a thankless job in many ways. With the possible exception of Chuck's eclectic taste in music when he was driving the van one year, it has always been a tremendous experience!!! I have some great memories of those trips.
just watched the replay, way to go cj, leave no doubt!! congrats to all kansas wrestlers who competed.

And here I thought people were saying that Kansas was lagging behind other states on the national level.
It’s always nice to be the smallest state in terms of population to be in the top ten. Just imagine how much of a better showing Kansas could have if we had a population say the size of Missouri who has nearly double the people inhabiting it. Heck, in terms of population we're outnumbered by the second smallest state in this top ten by almost 2.5 million in Minnesota.
I'm curious how many weights that the top eight had multiple placers in. It seems like it happens a lot with these powerhouse states (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio). I know we had one weight with multiple placers in 135 with Napier and Maple. Thought we might have a few other weights do this too with 112, 160, 171, and 215.
Virginia really gets help in this event due to them being the host. If it was still in Cleveland or Pittsburg I don't think you see them making a great showing year in and year out like they have at the Beach. You'd also see teams like Pennsylvania and Ohio probably finishing much higher if they were still hosting.
Nice showing Team Kansas. It’s a huge improvement from the non All-American year in 2007. Hopefully, this success can be kept up with more kids doing summer wrestling and participating in team events like the Middle School Duals in Iowa.
Congrats Team Kansas wrestlers, coaches and parents. Great showing. Way to represent Kansas. Congrats KS All-Americans.
It's me ... a bit frazzled but home! Give me about 36-hours, to do some laundry, get a couple of "good" nights sleep, and catch up on a few things around the house; and I would gladly do it again!
We can be very proud of the fine young men that represented Team Kansas! Again, the efforts towards Team are beyond question!
Yes, a tie for 6th is FanTasTic! (but we have to remember that our total was probably comparable to Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Missouri combined)
ALL the wrestlers performed to the best of their abilities and contributed to the collective success. While C.J. is getting some much deserved accolades (I believe Kansas has only had 3 wrestlers named OW); all of them deserve credit!
are we the only one in the top 10 without a division 1 wrestling team. wow, we have to fix that soon. just think if we could have save some of those kids from having to travel to dreaded nebraska or oklahoma or california or iowa just so they can wrestle at a division one school lol.
yea we're the only state unfortunately.
California could have a wrestler, that placed 7th at their State championship, win it all! A 4-times from Utah may go 0-2!
I checked the results and the 4-timer from UT that you mentioned ended up with 2nd. Hey, that's not too bad. After all, I think Sanderson was a 4-timer from UT.
Congratulations to Team KS!
Totally random question for this thread, but C C how big is that fish?!?
Picture isn't clear enough to see the notorious "flathead scrape" from his elbow to his hand. Oh wait, noodling isn't legal in most parts of Kansas. I'll change this note to "picture isn't clear enough to see that hook mark in the fish's mouth"
Looks like 35 lbs to me.......
Last year, we were able to watch matches on flowrestling.com. Does anyone know where we might be able to see some of the semi and finals matches other than ESPN360? Would like to see Napier's finals match and as many other ks matches as might be posted online somewhere.
I did not see anyone from Flo there this year.
somebody from flow must of been there. there are some matches on the website. i am watching maple's semi now
sorry flo. quite a bit of matches on there but not many kansas kids that i saw
I did not see anyone from Flo either. Last year they were pretty high profile, in that, their presence was announced at the meet time and time again. This year not at all.

I have watched a few of the matches on Flo. Sadly I think they got all of the matches Kansas kids lost (Maple and Caldwell's semifinals matches). There may be a few more out there.
They got Windham's third place match
