This past weekend--4, 5, 6 March--is probably the biggest week end in high school sports across the country. HS basket ball sectionals, regionals, districts, sub-districts, what ever they may be called in any state. I would think more games, players, teams, students, cheerleaders, fans, pep bands, parents and grandarents, filled gyms than any other weekend. I know some out their have voiced their negative opinions about BB, but accept it, a great sport and a great weekend.

And?
So?

Umm this is a high school wrestling forum... this belongs in the "other" section of the forum

No chance, rather watch figure skating (women's), pregnant curling teams or old folks playing checkers.
Posted By: sportsfan02 Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/07/10 11:01 PM
I agree! You can always take this topic over to the ******ball board. How embarrassing to have the PA guy at Hartman Arena giving KU updates yesterday! Get a clue people!

oh contrere mon frere, the opening week of football is bigger guaranteed. there is no way b-ball brings in more. silly pumpkin pounder, gyms are fuller for the opening football pep rally than they are for basketball. i don't mind if basketball has more fans, than wrestling, wrestling is tougher. tougher for the athletes, coaches, fans, parents, all across the board, tougher sport, fewer fans. i promise the fans are more loyal. ever had a bad basketball team, everyone leaves shortly after halftime. at a dual fans stay until the big boys are done!!!

Bunch of real hardasses out there.

If you don't have a kid in another sport than wrestling, a niec or nephew, or a kid down the street, and you don't go watch and enjoy some or all of those other sports, you are denying yourself a real pleasure. Athletes are athletes, what ever sport they play!!

I just watched 2 night of a 4A BB substate at Basehor Linwood. At least three, if not four times as many fans as during the Bobcat Classic. Full up student cheering sections with bands. Lot and lots moms and dads, lots of grandparents, lots of older folks from all communities, and lots of BB fans not associated with any of the schools. I truly do like HS wrestling. But what you get in attendance at a wrestling tournament is a few close friend of a few wreastlers, plus maybe mom and dad. Most of the seats are taken by wrestlers laying on the seats and their equip bags and food coolers cluttering the aisles. Hs wrestling is mostly a family affair and not a community affair.

Posted By: WillyM Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/08/10 12:05 AM
Not hardly. One of the biigest gripes on this forum is that fans leave as son as junior has finished. Plus, the gripe that the gyms are deserted when the HVY Wt get on the mats.
Posted By: sportsfan02 Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/08/10 12:36 AM
Oh we might do all those things you describe. What we DON'T do, is come on a wrestling board and talk about it!
Posted By: ReDPloyd Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/08/10 12:38 AM
The problem is, most people just don't get it. I played that other sport in JR High (in addition to wrestling, football, track, baseball, any other recreation sport I could fit in), and I am also an avid KU (other sport) fan. The collegiate television exposure that the other sport gets is what drives the fans to high school (other sport) games. If the general population understood what wrestling is, what wrestlers have to endure, what it means to compete without the help of teammates (except for cheering you on), they would have a lot more appreciation for what these gladiators are all about and why they are so special. I wish that wrestling had more exposure on television - collegiate, high school or Kids Federation. I would be glued to the tube.

I gave you a free pass when you did not know the difference between Freestyle, Greco, and Folkstyle. I figured that you just needed to be educated. You are NO FAN of HS Wrestling. You are a pumpkin pounder through and through. A spy to tarnish the good sport of wrestling. We as a WRESTLING COMMUNITY took you in. Tried to educate you. Tried to expose you to this great sport. You in turn disrespected us by belittling our sport and our kids, on a wrestling website of all places. I am proud to be part of a WRESTLING FAMILY that you will never be a part of or understand.

Depends on the community. Go to Norton or Ark City or Lansing, or Goddard or Oak Park, MO, or Oak Grove, MO, or a million other NEB, Iowa, etc towns. . . and tell me that wrestling is not a 'community affair'.

As if that is the standard of the quality of excellence of this great sport . . .

My home town didn't care much about wrestling. That belittles my home town, and not wrestling.

To each his own. Diversity is good and needed. But, no need to run down things that others love. Unless, you are a hater. If you are a hater, sad deal for YOU.

Beeson,

I love your passion for wrestling, and I share it with you. I know that you will be a spokesman for this sport as long as you live, and I am very thankful for that.

Amen Red, and Beeson also has the best signature on the forum!

Not that I am a rough dude. I am not. ;-) But I understand the need for it to excel at this sport.

I agree with Beeson 100 percent. You come on here and try to pawn yourself off as someone who is interested and just needs a little education on the sport and then try to promote every sport but wrestling. The wrestling community is a bigger kinder family than any other sport in the world. This is a family that developes lifelong bonds and friendships that noone can understand unless you have done it. As for the fan base I just explained that as well, people don't understand the passion and committment that these boys put into it for just a short amount of time on the mat,and when you have never done it then you make fun or ignore it. It is one of the original sports ever thought of and for you to speak negatively about it is just sickening.

at tourneys people leave early, not duals, i have never seen and emptied out gym at a dual. it may not be full, but they are there until the end. i like all sports even girls softball, but don't respect someone who tries to come on a wrestling thread and shove b-ball down our throats. let me ask you this.......... HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A SIMILAR POST ON A B-BALL THREAD BY A "CASUAL" B-BALL/ WRESTLING FAN.

IT IS STILL NO WHERE NEAR THE ATTENDANCE AS ANY FOOTBALL WEEKEND!!! NO WAY!!!
Posted By: WillyM Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/08/10 01:56 PM
I thought wrestling was over!!! All I have read on this forum for the last 2 weeks was som kind of inainity about a Big Pin and a seniors' tussle between L Baker and who? (beeson), plus lots of inaine side comments by numerous others.

Have ben to pep rallys. Never seen a full gym--regardless of the size of the gym. All students. No or few parents. Same for grandparents and community fans.

Yeah, football is big. Usually a good homr town crowd. Visiting crowds usually a lot less. Mom and dads, some student, even a few older fans. Every place is not a Smith Center.

Did not intend to shove anything down anybodies throat, nor did I make fun of the sport, the wrestlers, or the fans.

Have been to lots of week night wrestling matches and weekend tournaments. Stand by my statement that wrestling is a family and not a community affair. Does not draw much from the community. May draw better at smaller schools and towns--more community identification. My comments do not diminish the sport or give it a bad characteristic.

Two local high schools plus my wife's school. (Leavenworth Challanger is a very good wrestling tournament. Wish Lansing would apply and Leavenworth would let them in. Will never happen--no sports between the two schools. Quote from the previous Leavenworth AD: "will never play Lansing in any sport, too much to lose and nothing to gain"). I watch and enjoy teams from all three schools: VB, FB and boys soccer in the fall. G's and B's BB and wrestling in the winter, G's SB and soccer and boys' baseball in the spring--even do a couple of track meets. Can't say I have ever gone to watch HS tennis and golf.

At least I am out. My impression is that most on here, especially after the last weekend in February, sit by their computer and mostly argue about what was or happened in the past. Get a life, go watch some HS sports--will be good for your constitution.

Posted By: Quagmire Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/08/10 02:23 PM
Why do you care what people do with their own time? If some people would rather check out the forums instead of watching some bball then that's their preference. Not everyone has to be like you.
Posted By: WillyM Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/08/10 02:34 PM
I also love fishing. About all i can do any more. Enjoy catching anything. Throw everything back. Some times I do not even bait the hook--just sit back and enjoy being on the water.

Its a great moment when you feel the tug and jerk. This post was almost like fishing. Sure got a lot of bites and jerks!!!!

Can probably reel them in for the next 2 weeks.

If you missed it, the BigTen network had the conference championship matches live yesterday afternoon. There were some great matches with some of the best in college wrestling (they typically replay them if you're interested -- Cox channel 273 or HD 2273 if anyone is interested). This network had several conference and even some non-conference matches aired throughout the season as well . I agree ReDPloyd, more things like this would help drive the sport. I wish the Big12 had something like this, it's fun to watch with the boys.
Posted By: WillyM Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/08/10 04:19 PM
Beeson. Cool it!! You come across as a real light weight!

When I was in HS 50 yers ago they did not have wrestling. So, I don't know the details--what most of the moves are called, etc. For what ever reason I called follkstyle freestyle. I did know that Greco was different than what I saw in HS.

Saw my first HS wresling in 1980 when my middle son started wrstling in Jr High in Virginia. Pretty good wrestler but only wrestled 3 years and then did only football. Next wrestling I saw was "95" when my youngest started wrestling in the 9th grade. Spent a loy of butt time on the bleachers--still watch and enjoy a lot of wrestling.

So I don't know the details. So what? I do know and enjoy a good move and technique and a good wrestler when I see it. Does not take a brain surgeon to see a good athlete use his skills.

So, you don't need to cut me any slack Jack. Go argue with Lucas Baker!

I was at the Big 12 championships and they did have a camera crew. I'm sure it will be broadcast several times. If anyone knows of the date and time, would you please post them?

Contrarian, At least Lucas Baker is posting what he truely believes. You are just trying to stir the pot or go fishing, whatever you want to call it.

contrarian is just pissed that wrestlers have a silent prayer on the mat instead of the in locker rooms like all the other sports.
and as for your "tugging and jurking" keep that crap to your self this is a family fourm.

Mr. Hurla:

Contrarian, Bill Mason, Lansing here. Responding to your post.

Tried to do this by private message to preclude continuing or startin a row. But, left something out and message did not transmit.

2 comments if I may:

I have no objection to a voluntary individual or team prayer in the privacy of the locker room. Do object to non voluntary prayer, or public prayer in the gym or on the mats. Question: If everyone else does the prayer in the locker room--as you say- why do you have to do your's on the mats?

Do not understand your statement about "tugging and jerking", "crap", and "this is a family forum". Tugging and jerking was not a sexual inference. I was using fishing as an analogy of how some people are like the fish: they take the bait, and when hooked, they tug and jerk and fight the line and the rod. There are three pleasures to fishing: getting a fish to bite, setting the hook, playing the fish. Landing the fish is anti-climatic. Lots of fish out there. If you did not get this you must be slow on the uptake--or you are a fish.
Posted By: my12floz Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/11/10 02:11 AM
LOL!!! Now who is the fish and who is the fisherman?

My answer would be because it is individual. And if I want to stop anywhere and say a prayer then I can. If the ref deems that I am impeeding the natural progression of the match then he can penalize me.
Posted By: WillyM Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/11/10 06:35 PM
Agree. As long as someone does not call a bunch together on the mat/in the gym and hold a prayer meeting. It would no longer be private.

Go read the KSHSAA policy.
Posted By: wrestle007 Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/11/10 07:28 PM
If the "someone" is a student and the "bunch" comes voluntarily their is no problem.
Posted By: WillyM Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/11/10 08:17 PM
Again, go read the KSHSAA policy. Its that simple.

This started out about a great weekend of sports. Why have a couple of you dragged another topic over here.

Guess not. Headup is still hooked and fighting. Think I will speed up the boat and drag his a** ashore.
Posted By: HEADUP Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/12/10 02:47 AM
anytime you want to quit pretend fishing, come on down to the lake. you can hook a real catfish and wrestle it ashore. but i'll warn you, the people there are like the people on this forum. if you start talking about how much prettier or nicer or better some other lake is........you'll find your a$$ at the bottom of the creek channel. that's just the women. sorry but you don't go to a friends house and tell him how much better it is elsewhere.

sorry you take offense, but once a pumpkin pounder always a pumpkin pounder. orrr maybe pumpkins are great bait??? i've never heard of the great north kansas contrarian fish, bu i keep throwin' em out and trollin' the river, the pounder keeps bitin.

I wrote probably the equivilent of the length of the A section of the Websters dictionsary for this post and then realized that it would fall on deaf ears(those of the self proclaimed fisherman in the group), that is if someone read it outloud. Then I decided that everything I had written was the stuff that HEADUP, Beeson and many many others of us understand and those in the other group never will no matter how much of this banter goes on weather it is intended to be helpful to those that are misunderstanding or not. Then I realized I better get that extra hour of sleep tonight because we got weigh ins tommorrow night, subs on Saturday and Middle School Championships on Sunday and all those other practices and weekends from now until middle July when we'll finish up wrestling for the year (No it's not over, Just a little FYI, Fisherman). Come to think of it why am I on the High School threads....still got two years until we gotta worry about that. Oh yea, more stuff that that fisherman wouldn't understand. Anyway, better get, gotta go get some rest so I can go spend time with my Wrestling Family. Yes they are all my Wrestling Family, Fisherman, and that does make this sport more of a family geared sport than all those others are, so if you purport that as a weakness, you may want to try another angle.

Be careful what you're fishing for, you may get a shark or worse a school of those "harda**" ones that will eat you up and spit you back out. Think about this for the few that have steppped up to reply to your ignorance and possibly expose some of their own doing so (referring to me), there are a multitude out of sight ready to quietly join the frenzy.

Guess I should have left the A section of Websters though, seems like this is much less coherent than the previous........oh well, like I said, most likely will fall on deaf ears.

To my Wrestling Family, and you all know who you are, Keep up the good fight, I know you will.

My senior year on our way to state we had a pep rally the entire school was in the gym. They made a space down the center of the gym played some music and announced our names we ran out giving everyone high fives and got on the bus and was escorted out of town by the police and fire trucks. There were cars pulled over and people standing on the street like a parade. About 20 miles out of town our fans put more signs up on the highway to Wichita.
Not really sure where your coming from my whole community was behind the Abilene Wrestling team.
And I can start a fight on my own just fine I dont need you diverting any attention my way. Almost all wrestlers Hate Basketball your not going to win any new fans go pound it else where.

Some real hard asses on this forum!!

I made what I thought was an innocuous post about about the BB sub-state weekend. No disrespect intended to anyone, to any sport, to any athelete, or to any community.

I hope the vituperative responses of a very few do not represent the feelings of the rest of the members of this forum. I truly do not understand the harshness of their feelings about another high school sport or sports.

I enjoy and watch all high school sports. I feel very lucky that we have such sports for our kids and for us to watch. The US, and possibly Canada, are the only countries were we do have organized sports in our schools. In all other countries sports are conducted by clubs and sports schools on a pay for play basis. Sadly, with the nation wide budge crunch it may come to that here.

The high school wrestling season is over, the METRO Classic is done. I am going to log out and go watch some BB, and then some softball and baseball, maybe even some track.

What is it you cannot understand about this being a "wrestling" board? Try posting on one of those boards which I supplied you the links to, about something totally unrelated to their subject title, and see how it is received. Then get back to us.
Posted By: wrestle007 Re: Biggest Week End in HS Sports - 03/12/10 01:05 PM
contrarian-

1) the high school season was either done after state or still going. we still have sr. nationals, kids state, and the senior classic...these events are no less high school events than the metro classic. plus then we get into greco/freestyle and whole other host of things. high school baseball ends in may...do you think that baseball season ends in may? of course not, some of the best "high school" aged baseball happens at the summer tournaments that are played through july and then some fall ball that is played through october...same concept here, just because KSHSAA no longer has wrestling doesn't mean it has ceased.

2) i don't hate basketball, i can enjoy watching game from time to time. is it nearly the great sport wrestling is? no, not even close. however, i think what fired people up is that people took your comparison of bball to wrestling as you saying bball was better. you call the big bball weekend "biggest in hs sports." this insinuates that it's better than wrestling (and football, soccer, baseball, etc. for that matter). you refer to wrestling as a "family" event while basketball is a "community" event. the way you put that makes it look like you are favoring basketball. if you want to go watch basketball instead of post on this forum then do it. i don't care and i'm guessing neither does anyone else on here--but don't give us pro basketball comparisons and don't tell us when the season is over.
