Is SJA going to be able to make the trip out to western Kansas this year? I know that last year they had to switch to a tournament closer to home.

There were several teams that didn't make it to Garden last year including Holcomb which was just a few miles away! I cannot predict the weather but if it permits then we will be there. Last year the trip to Denver the week before coupled with multiple snow days made it impossible for us to go. I was there though! smile
Yeah, I went back and looked at last year's tournament preview just to look at what all transpired to keep SJA from attending. I knew the trip to Denver was a factor, but I forgot that weather was another issue.

Hopefully, you won't have another flight already booked from LA to GC again, that can't be a cheap flight. I'll give you a ride in my racecar if it happens again.

I hope either Taylor Moeder or Ryne Cokeley will move to 145 for this tournament for a possible matchup with Travis Himmelman of Conifer. One of those possible matches would be worth the price of admission.
Maybe Travis should move up or down?
Ryne isn't cutting any weight so 145 is not going to happen.

Travis, Taylor and Ryne have all wrestled each other before and they are friends. I think they are going to stay in their seperate weight classes since they are seniors.
If you don't mind me asking... When did they meet and what was the outcome?

I honestly couldnt tell you when it was Taylor and Travis last wrestled a Folkstyle match but I beleive Travis won the last one. I know they wrestled eachother in a challenge match at Reno for 2nd place years ago, but not even sure who won that one or who was even challenging the placing.
Rocky Welton Trivia: Where did Rocky win his first state championship? Post your answer and then post another Rocky question!!

For you young'ins this guy is a legend, and is in the national wrestling hall of fame!!!

As a coach Mr. Welton won nine high school team state wrestling championships, the first three at Goodland High School and six at Garden City High School. The first was in 1972.
More difficult trivia. . .

at what high school did "The Rock" start his coaching career; and for bonus points, what well known Kansas wrestling referee was "The Rock's" successor at this school?

You may begin. . .

Liberal- Rob Ross
Ding. . Ding. . .Ding we have a winner.
Rob Ross was NOT Rocky's successor. Fred Scott followed him, I believe. Then John Kendal, Fairchild, Don Scott, Rob Ross, Tom Scott, Pewthers. The first coach at Liberal was Gerald Sadowski.
I definitely defer to your "Liberal" knowledge as you are a true "Liberal" guy having grown up in the "Liberal" environment and having received a "Liberal" education and competed for a "Liberal" wrestling team.
What current kids club coach wrestled for Greg Mann as a Freshman and Rocky Welton as a Senior?

Welton Invitational set to showcase four-state wrestlers
Published 1/27/2011 in Prep-Garden City

bmarshall@gctelegram.com

Even when the Garden City High School wrestling program had its powerhouse teams of the 1990s, the Buffaloes found it difficult to win the then Garden City Invitational.

When the tournament, named the Rocky Welton Invitational in 2005 for retired GCHS legendary coach Rocky Welton, begins on Friday and concludes Saturday night, GCHS coach Monte Moser won't be surprised if his team isn't the team champion.

It has been 18 years since the Buffs last won the Invitational (1993), the last of a four-year run (1990-93) and was the 18th team title for the Buffaloes.

Defending its championship this year will be Ponderosa, Colo., who barely edged Rio Rancho, N.M., the champion in 2008-09. Ponderosa had also claimed team titles in 2006-07.

"It's always been a tough, tough tournament," said Moser, who has been in the GCHS program for nearly three decades and is now in his fourth year as head coach. "While it's important for us to do well and represent the school and community, I don't want the boys to lose sight of the fact that we don't want to peak for another month."

Moser is talking about the Class 6A state wrestling tournament that will be contested in Wichita (Feb. 25-26).

Until then, the Welton is the last major tournament for the Buffs.

Over the final few weeks of the regular season, the Buffs will have a quadrangular meet with Western Athletic Conference foes Hays, Great Bend and Liberal (Feb. 3), an away dual at Colby and then the 6A regional in Wichita (Feb. 19 at Campus High School in Haysville).

"I just try not to play it (Welton) up too much because we don't want the kids peaking this time of the season," Moser said. "With that said, it's a darn good practice for the state tournament. If you place here, you've got a good chance of placing at state."

It has been a season of injuries, illness and roster changes that have plagued the Buffaloes at times.

Moser, though, said his team was about as healthy as it has been all season for the Welton.

"We've healed up about as good as we can," Moser said early this week.

That would be most everyone except junior Braxston Medina, a finalist at 135 pounds a year ago. Medina, who has been battling a hip injury and missed the Derby Invitational, has been scratched for the Welton.

"He'll miss the Welton and we hope it will not be for the season," Moser said.

Junior Tyson Phillus (12-6) at 145 pounds sprained an ankle during Tuesday's practice and also will miss the Invitational.

"It seems like this stuff happens every year," Moser said. "It's just part of it. We don't like it, but there's not much to be done about it."

Senior Colt McElroy won the 119-pound title a year ago by default when Liberal's Adrian Salas was scratched from the finals. Medina lost his title match at 135 when he got pinned and former GCHS state titleholder Joey Dozier was defeated in his 145-pound championship match. Those were the only three Buffs in the finals a year ago.

Among the top GCHS wrestlers who will compete; McElroy at 130 (21-3), Jon Heiman at 152 (27-4), Anthony Shockley at 171 (25-4) and Aaron DeLeon at 189 (27-5) will be among those to contend for top honors.

"Our primary focus will just be to continue to improve on the things we work on and get better," Moser said.

Just click on the wrestlers name and you get nothing. On Track you get his entire history. Quality wins, accomplishments, etc. Also readily available for any year you would like. You have brackets with scores but as good as Track? Not exactly.

This was posted by Mark Stanley:

I am a big fan of trackwrestling. The benefits are numerous. USAWKS has been using it for the folkstyle State tourney series for three years without incident. Last year they moved to the very convienent “mat-side scoring” component; the mat-side scoring option allows you to throw away the paper and pencil. NO CHASING PAPER BOUT SHEETS! The added benefit of mat-side scoring is REAL TIME updates that can be tracked by the fans at home. Once the tourney is wrapped up trackwrestling has results in a format that are easily reportable to the media and complete brackets are stored on trackwreslting servers for later review.

Topeka Seaman has also been using the statistics option which costs $50 per year, but allows you to EASILY track all the common stats in a format that is reviewable from year to year.

I am well aware of what TW can and cannot do. I also am aware that if we don't make our sport somewhat profitable, that it will die a slow death. Eventually, all schools are going to be forced to look at their receipts from all sports. With our sport already taking a hit at the gate due to a large portion of our fans being at youth tournaments on Saturdays, it makes it even more imperative that the rest of us get off our asses and get to the tournaments.

Nice work by St. James! Only bringing 6 wrestlers and in 4th place! Finish strong Kansas.

Don't mean to hi-jack a thread but.... I did not know until tonight that Mac Bailey and Dustin Zawhorski where fighting MMA. I have always HATED the "pro wrestling" thing but also resented the fact that there was never the potential for an exceptional wrestler to profit (bad word) like basketball players do in the NBA from their God given talent. My question is two fold...

1. How do you feel about MMA and leveraging its potential for drafting young recruits into the sport of wrestling?
2. Shouldn’t there be a heading for MMA on this forum to track the successes of our home-grown, MMA talent? It is the future.

I am not an MMA fanatic but I do know that boxing is dead and wrestling is the breeding ground for the BEST MMA fighters!

talk amongst yourselves...
Nice showing by Pine Creek... Glad to see a former KS wrestler leading the way and brining his team back to face some different competition.

Talk about cost effective wrestling! Six wrestlers - four finalists- 4th place after first day!

I get to talk about it with my friends!
I get to promote the sport of wrestling!
And I get to take it all in remotely!

What tournament are going to attend sporto?
The first six weights have NO Kansans in the finals. Only three weights have both wrestlers from Kansas. That means only 11 out of 28 wrestlers are from Kansas. See Jerry Dale's Post...
Looks like another good and tough tourn in GC. I was wondering if anyone had any information on who won OW of the tourn. My guess is prob. Moeder @140,Himmelman @ 145, or Cokeley @152.
119 lb. Martinez of Pine Creek got MOW.
Thanx. I really thought it would be Himmelman, after he walked throught his bracket after the first round.
Those lower weight Pine Creek kids are the real deal, I was very impressed when I watched them wrestle at the Colby Dual Tournament, and not only are they great wrestlers they are fine young men, as are all the kids on the team. The coaching staff as well are great guys.

Sport0,

I have a really good friend who is a former Liberal High Redskin wrestler, state placer in his day, who has ALS. He is confined to a wheelchair and cannot "get off of his ass and get to the tournament" but he loves following Kansas wrestling on trackwrestling because it is easy to access, easy to use, and real time. Every weekend he asks if the tournament we are going to be on trackwrestling. I would pay for all the St. James tournaments to be on trackwrestling just to bring the real time results into Joe's computer every weekend.
trackwrestling also allows the kids club coaches who have multiple interest/connections to the High School tournaments to keep track of the results.
