This may be a stupid question, but I am hoping someone can enlighten me. What is the allowable weight difference between two wrestling team mates going for the same weight class. For instance, wrestler A is weighing 99lbs. and wrestler B is weighing 113, both shooting for the 106lb. weight class. Obviously this would be quite an advantage for wrestler B. If they were closer in weight prior to the wrestle off it would create fairness. I know from wrestling that wrestler B could lose the six or seven lbs. in a day or two. Just wondering if there were any actual rules put in place for this. With the new 106lb. weight class, i think this will be a pretty normal problem for the littler guys of this weight. I would bet it would not be out of line to say that some kids weighing 120 will be shooting for this class.

In this instance I would consider waiting until wrestler b is closer to 106. Maybe a day or 2 before weigh in. Wrestler a is going to have to deal with being smaller anyway but not that much.

I think you'll find most high schools will require that on challenge day, both wrestlers should be no more than 5 lbs over the weight class they are challenging for. I've had several coaches tell me this 5 lb figure, so I assume it is pretty common. So if your son is weighing 99, he could be wrestling a 111 lb kid.

I don't believe there is any rule that says the kids have to be within so much, and if there was, it would probably disallow the one that is too light, to wrestle.

I think we had an issue with a kid in the heavyweight class in the kids' series a few years ago that signed up for heavyweight, but didn't weigh enough to compete in that weight class.

Maybe someone else can clarify...

In years past I've also seen the 99lb kid have to be within 5lbs (101lbs) to challenge also.

Probably because the coach feels that the kid needs to be that big to be competitive against some possible larger competitors that weekend?? I can see that in certain circumstances, but I think if a 90 lb kid can beat a 111 lb kid, he should be the guy........
