Opinions on which tournament is tougher this year? Not past years or inherently...let's talk this year. Maybe give some supporting reasoning for the opinion.

#1 - Andale
#2 - STA
#2 - St. James
#3 - Pittsburg
#4 - Bonner Springs

#9 - Baldwin
#9 - SM East
#10 - Lansing
BOBCAT is tougher.
I am pretty sure there are more ranked wrestlers there. More Fargo All Americans and more teams. More out of state teams too.
Newton has 14 ranked KS teams and 1 ranked out of state team.
Bobcat has 13 ranked KS teams and 5 ranked out of state teams.
Newton has 2 #1 ranked teams.
Bobcat has 3 #1 ranked teams.
Newton has 17 #1 ranked KS wrestlers.
Bobcat has 14 #1 ranked KS wrestlers.
Dang close!!!!!
It's the out of state teams that tip the scale in Bobcat's favor. There are 3 more #1's from out of state teams at Newton. 11 more #1's from the out of state teams at Bobcat.
Both tournaments are insanely tough.
It is too bad that they are both the same weekend. If they were not then teams could go to both. Which would make both of them tougher!
NEWTON Tournament
Attending this year: Andover Central, Ark City, Bishop Carroll, Colby, Derby, Dodge City, Emporia, Garden City, Gardner Edgerton, Hutchinson, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Liberal, Maize, Maize South, Manhattan, McPherson, Mill Valley, Newton, Norton, Salina South, Tulsa Union, OK, Wichita Heights, Wichita NW
RANKED TEAMS
#1 – Lawrence
#1 – Newton
#2 - Manhattan
#2 – Ark City
#3 – Gardner-Edgerton
#4 – Wichita Heights
#4 – Andover Central
#4 - McPherson
#6 – Derby
#5 – Garden City
#7 – Wichita NW
#7 – Colby
#9 - Emporia
#9 - Dodge City
#20 – Tulsa Union, OK (that is #20 NATIONALLY, folks!)
Add to Bobcat - #1 - Blue Springs, MO (Honorable Mention National rankings)
as badbo says, both are insanely tough!!!!
It comes down to building for the state tournament:
GE has already seen these teams wrestling at Bobcat:
#1 - Blue Springs, MO
#2 - STA
#2 - St. James
#3 - Pittsburg
#4 - Bonner Springs
#5 - Oak Park, MO
#6 - Platte County, MO
#7 - Topeka Seaman
#9 - Baldwin
#9 - SM East
#10 - Lansing
But GE Will see these for the first time at Newton:
Andover Central,
Ark City,
Colby,
Derby,
Dodge City,
Emporia,
Garden City,
Hutchinson,
Leavenworth,
Liberal,
Maize,
Maize South,
Manhattan,
McPherson,
Newton,
Norton,
Salina South,
Tulsa Union, OK,
Wichita Heights,
Wichita NW
Love to see Colby and Norton from out west.
Makes sense to be at Newton.
I think it is also safe to say that either of these tournaments is tougher...or at least as tough...as state for any class.
Any wrestler that places at either of these can call it a good weekend. Lots of good wrestler that were never able to place.
Where can I find a wrestler list for The Bobcat?

Is Matt Reed wrestling or playing football this weekend?
Thank the Chief. I just cut and pasted his work. As you can see, the out of state wrestlers at the Bobcat make it an easy pick as the tougher tournament.
Is there a complete list of wrestlers available anywhere?
I have always championed Newton as the premier Kansas tournament, it is dang tough no doubt.
But since my son got into HS and I became more exposed to and informed about Basehor Linwood and the tournament also got tougher over his HS career, I have felt that BL was at least as tough if not tougher. Now with all the newer teams added the last few years and especially latest additions of out of state teams at BL this year, there is no question in my mind about BL being tops. I will say though that Newton also seems tougher than it was a few years ago. I know that this is just one weight I am talking about, but my son would draw a #3 at Newton whereas he will draw #5 at BL unless there is somebody else we don't know about.
But what about Garden City, how does that stack up this year? I know many, especially Will, have championed GC in the past as the best. How is it now?
Was talking with our coach about this subject today and what we agreed is great to see are the increasing number of out of state schools crossing the borders to compete in Kansas. Newton, Bobcat and I believe we had 6 out of state schools at our home tourney @ GE representing 3 states. And these are quality programs coming in to compete. Very encouraging.
No offense to any of the wrestlers @ 138 but Steltzen even being ranked #7 in Ok hes an equivalent to some of the #2-3s in the 138 class here in Ks.

Is Matt Reed wrestling or playing football this weekend?
Why/where would Reed be playing football? Some
Senior Classic all-star game or something?
I watched his final last week. GHEZ! Lightening fast! I sure am glad this old man does not have to wrestle him. Ha. Speaking of old men (ha again - I'm older than Coach Church), how do you do when you wrestle him Coach Church?! Inquiring minds want to know. Ha. Take care. Dean
Matt Reed is scheduled to play in the Blue/Gray High School game Tampa Bay's stadium.....
http://www.foxsportsflorida.com/01/06/12...?blockID=641044Many Kansas kids in the game.
I think the best tournament is the one that you are able to attend. There won't be anyone going home from either of these tournaments feeling like they didn't get a lot of bang for their buck(s).
I would, could, should watch both tournaments, but I can't. I will have an informant at Newton and the Bobcat.
To take one from Eric Johnson - "Dang close!!!!!"
To take another one from BADBO - "Both tournaments are insanely tough."
I will be attending the Greater Frontenac Metro Open and the SMNW
Novice Nationals. In a few years we will see some of the faces from these youth tournaments attending the Newton and Bobcat tournament. Some of the Bobcat and Newton wrestlers will be attending some collegiate tournaments. Great weekend of wrestling coming up.
I would like to see matt reed move up to the next weight to wrestle the kid from union I think reed is the best kansas kid this year pound for pound I sure hope to see him wrestling in college instead of football.
Wouldn't he have a hard time seeing over those 6 foot 5 to 6 foot eight linebackers? Sure, he could do it and have success. But as good as he is at both, why take the chance of guy that out-weighs you by a hundred pounds or more smashing you like a pumpkin?!
To state the obvious, I guess it is just what Matt wants to do most and who/what are his best opportunities.
As Coach Church told me one day, "He is one BAD DUDE!" Ha, true that!

I've never seen him play football, but have watched him wrestle for years. I know he lacks the height of an ideal D1 QB. Is he being recruited as a QB or an Athlete at the next level for football? Again, I've never seen him play football but know his athleticism from watching him on the mat!
Nasty, Reed is a monster he posted a 17-1 record on the jr dual team last summer and if my memory serves me correctly I dont think he sat out 1 dual? That said we were @ the Union tourney in Dec and seen Crutchmer he is a big 182 considering Reed can make 170 I think its a better match up for Conklin who if isnt as good as athlete or wrestler as Reed the margin between them is razor thin! Both are fun to watch and as gifted athletes you can see in any sport.
Kevin Seybold
I believe Reed should be an NFL DB or perhaps an MMA fighter. Unless he would prefer to seek a profession in a non-athletic related arena. I am sure he is smart, disciplined and dedicated and could do just about anything.
My prediction is that Matt Reed goes to West Point and wrestles for coach Joe Heskett! The Army Black Knights!!!
OR..... Play football for them...
Or that, that sounds great!
