I saw a topic on twitter posed by @sportsinkansas asking how many brothers have won Kansas State wrestling titles and being that I am fairly new to the sport I thought I better ask the experts....
recent winners (also my cousins) the Bennett brothers of Pittsburg High
who else?
I am from the Kansas City MO area (Independence to be exact). When I was in HS (late 70's), our rival HS (Chrisman HS vs. Truman HS) had a set of twins. I won't share their last name as I have not had their permission.
Matt and Mark. As juniors they both took third in state. As seniors, they were both undefeated state champs. They wrestled like 126 and 132.
Both got wrestling scholarships to MU in Columbia, Missouri. I am not sure how their college careers went.
I do remember when I was a tenth grader and I was going to have to wrestle one of them (it was their senior year) in a dual. I was not looking forward to that. Our coach made a good decision that night. He said, "Dean, we are moving you down to JV tonight. I think you'll have a more competitive match on that level tonight."
I jokingly said something like, "Ghez coach! I was going to tear that twin up!"
He said, "OK, we can move you back up if you want."\
"NO WAY COACH! I was just joking. I like my JV match for tonight!"
I thought I remember some young men from Hoxie (5--10 years ago?) that might have been twins and state champs at the same time. Anybody help us out with that one? Maybe they were 'just' brothers rather than twins.
You are probably thinking about the Schippers or Bakers!
Way back in 1968 Wichita Heights defeated Ark City for the AA State Championship. Heights had 2 brothers that were State Champions that year, Bob and Doug Lunt. They both wrestled in college, Bob at University of Alabama and Doug at Iowa State. Doug later came back to Kansas and coached at Leoti and Coffeyville. Heights won the championship that year by taking 5 wrestlers to the tournament placing 2 firsts, 1 second and 2 thirds. That was the beginning of a ten year streak of placing in the top 5 teams at state with another first in 1976.
I remember the Duell brothers , Doug and Fred ( 4timer & 3timer )from Goodland .
Clay Center State Champion siblings Brandon (96,97,98) and Sheldon Pfizenmaier (2001), Tyler(2010) and Zach Anderson(2011).
