Jake Elbrader - From Burlington to STA

Good Call.

Maki to Andover his senior year???? Very disappointing. Work hard, do as you're asked to do and you succeed.....otherwise I guess you transfer.

I not sure what these guys have put on for weight over the summer, but it looks like a tough practice room for STA, I'm guessing from 138 down: Elbrader, Dickman, Gooch, Henes, Dulgarian, Hoskins, and I feel like I might be missing someone. As far as 145 and up, with the guys I know of, it won't be much easier. This should be a very solid team.

Unless you have some insight to this situation that the rest of us don't, maybe you should avoid calling out a KID by name. There are a lot of factors that go into these decisions for the families involved. Let's respect their right to choose what is best for their KIDS.
Posted By: KSwrestler103 Re: Transfers? - 08/17/12 01:16 AM
Their were no factors. The KID just left the school and coaches that have been helping him for 4 yours without having the courtesy to tell any coach he wouldn't be back next year.

Reported Transfers and new school:

Khamin Crow - Topeka Seaman
Tyler Dickman - STA

No matter what happens, a kid has to (should) do what he thinks is best for him (or what his parents think is best for him).
I don't know enough to comment on the courtesy thing but we as humans should always try to be courteous shouldn't we.

Yes, it appears the Univ of STA had another good summer in recruiting. It can be hard to say no to the tough sell they give kids and their parents. I just wish more kids and thier parents would be more loyal to their old school, their old coaches and most importantly to their old teammates.

A majority of the young men that will be wrestling varsity for STA this year spent quite a few years wrestling for their Kids' Federation Club. I don't believe that it was a tough sell for those wrestlers, or for their families.
Posted By: Peanut1234 Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 10:48 AM
And some of the kids wrestling varsity for STA this year wrestled for other high schools in their carers. THAT'S THE POINT. The University STA (and other private schools) don't have to play by the same rules. Selling (recruiting) should not be happening.

STA has a wonderful youth program. Their high school program seems to be very similar, a lot of great people, parents, wrestlers and coaches. By the way, I don't give a squat about the whole private school debate. That is a choice that can be made by the wrestlers and their parents.
Posted By: ReDPloyd Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 11:58 AM
Khamin Crow - Topeka Seaman
Tyler Dickman - STA
Jake Elbrader - STA
Hunter Furnish - Andale
Mike Kenny - Olathe North
Lucas Maki - Andover
Chance Maynard - Dodge City
Skylar Olson - Rossville

One more point. Eight of the eight on this list wrestled for other high school programs. Heck, one of these wrestlers started at the high school he is going back to wrestle for this year. Wish them the best and leave it at that.
Posted By: Peanut1234 Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 06:13 PM
DUH...of course they wrestled for other high schools. They moved into another school district. That is why they are wrestling for a different school. That's not the case for University of STA transfers. They were recruited by coaches and others close to the program. Of course you would like to leave it alone......there is no defense to what The University of STA does.

I heard Michael Olson is going to Tongy this year. Any truth to this rumor?
Posted By: ReDPloyd Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 07:34 PM
DUH...........really? Did you say DUH? How about you tell us who got so heavily recruited that they ditched out on their high school team, coaches, and teammates? We all know that there is a the chance that private schools can recruit. You know what, it more than likely happens in public schools too. Change your address, whether you actually live there or not, and bingo, you are wrestling for another program.

You did get me on one thing though; eight of eight wrestling for another high school program. This is the transfer thread, so they more than likely switched programs.
Posted By: Peanut1234 Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 08:09 PM
You will never get me to name any KID by name on this form page. This is not a kid issue.

This is an adult issue.....Coaches and Parents

The issue is the state of Kansas has not and never will address the issue of kansas private schools that recruit top notch atheletes. Unethical coaches will always do whatever it takes to win. recruiting atheletes from another school is unethical.
Posted By: PatrickCavanaugh Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 08:40 PM
Curious, whats the carrot the unethical coach offers the recruited athlete to transfer?
Posted By: Peanut1234 Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 08:52 PM
Chance to be part of a state champion team, education, wrestle with yours buddies you workout with in the summer, better facilities........all the same things a College Coach might offer.
Posted By: PatrickCavanaugh Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 09:01 PM
And public schools don't do this? Well, other then the better education part. All the things peanut listed are reasons that my son would want to transfer. Chance to win a state championship, get to wrestle with your buddies and better facility. We almost moved this summer for these very things but there was no recruiting by school employees though. Recruiting, I believe happens alot more from alumni then school employees. At least that has been my experience.
Posted By: ReDPloyd Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 10:26 PM
PC, your are correct. There have been many times I am sure that some families relocated (real or otherwise) to give their kid a chance to be on a better team. The only difference from the private schools, you don't have to relocate (real or otherwise).
Posted By: Peanut1234 Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 11:44 PM
So there u have it. If your a public school coach and want to recruit u have to convince a kids parents to either move into your district or convince them to lie about their address.
To recruit at a private school you only have to convince the parents to drive or let the kid drive a few extra miles......

I have no problem with parents wanting what they think is best for their kid. By all means..open it up so any kid can go where ever they want......that's never going to happen. My intent of my post was just to point out once again a private school has taken full advantage of their ability to welcome any student that wants to come. Be ing able to recruit a state runner-up is a huge advantage. Unfortunately coach Keal will have to hope one moves into his school district. He can't just go get one. Maybe next time the STA coach will develop, train and coach up is own kids.

What about the kid, that i won't name, that left a championship contender, one of the best academic schools, the school built a brand new gym and bought 2 new wrestling mats (facility). And has lived in the public school district he transfered to for 4 years while still attending the private school. But decides to transfer senior year????

none of my business.
Posted By: Peanut1234 Re: Transfers? - 08/18/12 11:58 PM
If it was a case that the public school coach recruited him, it's no different and that coach is unethical as well.
Posted By: PatrickCavanaugh Re: Transfers? - 08/19/12 12:07 AM
Lee and Peanut, i can only speak for shawnee county, but here if you want your child to go to a school where you are not in the district, you request the transfer and go to the school board meeting to explain why you want to go to said school. Flattery has been known to work well when using this technique. I see what you are saying with private school, the checkbook instead of actually writing a letter and showing up to the school board meeting to plead your case. I am in a tax bracket where I've had to do the latter. That and Hayden sucks at wrestling!

Ouch! Sometimes the truth hurts, and this is one of those times. I never could figure out how a football school couldn't put a decent wrestling team on the mat (happened many years here at LHS). Now the wrestling team's accomplishments blow away anything the football team has done for years. Go figure.

Let me back up Peanuts claim about private schools having a recruiting advantage. I have written proof because I got an actual recruiting letter just the other day.

I have a junior that some schools would consider a somewhat desirable recruit to their academic and athletic programs. A starting QB as a freshman, 2 time state placer - state runner up in wrestling, a key part of the state placing baseball team the last two years, and first chair tuba in the band.

This letter has several items listed but only covers about half of the total package the school will "give" my student for attending. This was just a list to get him in the front door. I've been told many more of these things will be "given" if he sticks around.

The items are too great to list them all here so I'll sum it all up with a few short words.

Total amount due - $ 7272.00 smile

I'm sure that same letter was sent out to many others who did not see it as recruiting. I would hope any school that was recruiting someone would not be stupid enough to put things in writing. There is a difference between a school selling itself and recruiting. If you were getting called by school officials/coaches I would say you have a case.

I don't see how paying a small fortune to go to a private school is a recruiting advantage. If anything a private school is behind the 8-ball from the get go. There is a little more too it than driving a few extra miles.

Exactly!!! smirk
Posted By: RedStorm Re: Transfers? - 08/21/12 01:27 AM
I have worked in both public and private schools and in both cases, all I have ever cared about are the kids that wanted to be a part of what we were doing. You can't fight the poor advice, instant gratification and love of being recruited that many in this generation desire, but in many cases, kids are just doing what they feel is best for them with the support of their parents. If a kid is no longer interested in your program, wish him well and then focus on the kids that do want to be a part of what you are doing. They deserve your full attention and enthusiasm.
Posted By: PatrickCavanaugh Re: Transfers? - 08/21/12 02:52 PM
Well said!
Posted By: GregMann Re: Transfers? - 08/21/12 04:37 PM
Still, it is a KITN when a kid to whom full attention and enthusiasm has been given decides for unknown reasons to go elsewhere. . .and it has nothing to do with the public vs. private debate. Rejection hurts, especially in a sport in which coaches and kids spend so much time and work so closely with each other.
