Due to job opportunities, we are considering moving to the Tennessee area. Does anyone have any idea how Tennessee High School wrestling stacks up vs. Kansas?
In 2011/2012
Kansas High Schools
206 schools with 5,283 wrestlers
Tennessee High Schools
169 schools with 4,336 wrestlers
Tenn is 2x more populous than Kansas; 6.4 million vs. 2.9 million (2011).
Tennessee Public School Students: 912,124
Number of Students in Private Schools 83,536
Kansas Public School Students: 468,510
Number of Students in private schools: 41,966

I know nothing about quality, but safe to say that wrestling in Tenn is not as popular of a high school sport as it is in Kansas.
After those last two posts, its pretty clear Kansas is way more involved than Tennessee in wrestling.
Now, how does Kansas stack up against other major wrestling states, with student population in percentage to high school wrestlers? Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Missouri, etc.
I looked at high school numbers (2011/12) as percentage of total state population (2011).
1) Nebraska = .2430%
2) Iowa = .2324%
3) Alaska = .2221%
4) Kansas = .1873%
5) Wyoming = .1832%

This is all great info and I appreciate the work everyone has put in, but... does anyone have any insight about the Quality of wrestling in Tennessee???
According to the family I have that lives in Chattanooga, wrestling in Tennessee is like it is in most southern states: an afterthought. Football is king. Football season runs well into wrestling season, with the state championship game being played in December.
As in almost all southern states, wrestling is big in certain areas, and you have your powerhouse schools like you do anywhere (Soddy, Red Bank, etc.), but it's generally not as revered as it is here. But they do have a dual state, so that's cool.
Also: Tennessee does Public School State and Private School State.
They do not all compete at the same state tournament...
