With the Phillipsburg tournament coming up this Saturday, does anybody have any thoughts on Brandon Ball from Hoisington potentially matching up against Caleb Austin from Greeley County? There's been some chatter about Austin being able to be one to knock off Ball at 138 this year.
Should be a good preview of a possible state finals matchup.
Was Austin at Greeley County last year?
Was Austin at Greeley County last year?
No. He is a move in from Kentucky I believe! If I remember correctly from the seeding meeting at St. Francis at the start of the year, he got 4th last year at state.
From watching Austin wrestle this year, he is a good one. I watched him beat Jurgens and Wessling back to back at Norton. Two damn good wrestlers and matches.
From what I have found, Austin has been a 4 time state qualifier 3 time placer in Kentucky. It looks like Kentucky allows JR High kids to qualify for State.
2011 - 103 - 8th grade - Beat out on back side. Went 3-2 in tournament one match from placing.
2012 - 106 - Fr. - 6th place (got beat by eventual Champ Mike Whalen 5-3 OT)
2013 - 120 - Soph - 2nd place (got beat in finals by Trae Blackwell 10-4) Blackwell has signed with OU
2014 - 126 - Jr. - 4th place (got beat by eventual Champ David Carr 5-4) Carr beat Blackwell in the finals.
Looking forward to the possible matchup between Ball and Austin at the Panther Classic!

Will add three things. . .
#1 Kentucky has a one-class state tournament.
#2 The Carr who beat Austin is the son of Nate Carr.
#3 I think Carr was an 8th grader last year.
Are you guys talking about Bill Brasky? I know Bill Brasky!

The king is dead. Let it go.

I wouldn't sleep on Wessling from Beloit either since he'll be there as well! Should be some good matches!
Rumor was that Tristan Porsch of Hoxie was going to bump up to wrestle that weight class at Phillipsburg. Don't know if that is still the case or not.

I don't want to give the good people at Phillipsburg any ideas BUT if this were to happen, they should charge double.
.
Would love to this happen, but don't expect it to.

I'm just curious as to why they should charge double?

Damn it you're right.......triple!

Good Idea. That would help up on space in the stands and matside. It may not be as exciting with not as many people there, but hey you are definitly thinking outside the box.

The pricing thing was a joke pertaining to fans wanting to see two
undefeated, returning state champs wrestle in a bracket which will consist of two undefeated wrestlers already.
Out here in 321A country, it's what gets us off our tractors.
And at Phillipsburg, you better come early to get a seat. They run the JV tournament at the same time basically underneath your seat.

Did you guys spend all day yesterday watching signing day? This thread is almost creepy.
Porsch is listed @ 138 on Trackwrestling
Track shows Austin at 31-0, Ball and Porsch at 29-0, and Wessling at 27-2. What a bracket!
So the dashboard quit showing the match after period 1. Now it shows Austin beat Ball 8-2? True?
Two takedowns, 3 NF, 1 escape for Austin. Two escapes for Ball. Ball chose top second period. Austin chose neutral in third.
I haven't seen Austin wrestle, but if he can control the match against Ball like that, I have no doubt he must be the real deal.
Very fun wrestler to watch. Has a unique style, pretty exciting with lots of action. Got to give Porsch props for bumping up to wrestle some fellow studs. 138 is scary this year.

Agreed! Huge props to Porsche! Some great matches by 3 stud wrestlers! They all deserved the standing ovation they got!

Here is the clips from the Cube for the 138 # matches at the Panther Classic
Porsch vs Austin -Semi Finals
and
Austin vs Ball - Championship Match
http://thecube.com/event/nchs-wrestling-panther-classic-459215Semi final match is around the 3:50 mark and the Championship match is at the 6:25 mark!
Certainly closer than the final score indicated...interesting that Ball chose top in the 2nd period, a poor choice (and not just in hindsight). Austin is for real. Can't wait to see these 2 lock horns again. I just hope it's in the state finals and not the semis.
If you get a chance to watch Austin please do. He is amazing to watch. I have had the privilege to watch him at two tournaments. I also visited with him off the mat very respectful down to earth young man. To watch him with his grandparents will warm your heart. Glad to send there are still young men like this around.
I'm guessing Ball went top to see what Austin would do on the mat since he is hardly ever on bottom. Also, Ball is relentless on top, and very skilled at turning people and riding. Just a thought, but i don't know. I'm interested to see how it plays out next time and what the choices are. And if what jule said up there is true, then you have two phenomenal and worthy kids, because I know Brandon is one of the most humble and gracious individuals I've ever met. Just two great wrestlers! Can't wait to see them again!
