I saw several kids today that would do well to see that video.

A) Act like you've been there before when you win. Yes, we're all very impressed that you won, but victory laps are a little excessive.

B) Shake your opponent's hand whether you win or lose. Shake the opposing coach's hand whether you win or lose. It's not hard. This isn't Missouri.

That being said, the majority of the kids I saw today did a great job. Most of those who won did so with class, most of those who lost took it like a man.

It's not hard to be a good sport, but some wrestlers make it easy to be a poor sport. I don't just blame them, there are a number of cast members that could influence them in a positive way but choose not to.

Kind of hard to blame the kid when you witness something like what happened at Hartman Arena tonight. After watching that I would say that the coach or administration of that school needs to step in or they are doing the same as condoning it. It doesn't matter if there is history or not, for a parent to jump on the mat and scream/taunt a high school kid is asinine.

Jerry, I won't even ask. Parents do influence their kids, some do it the right way, others just suck at it. Coaches and administrators should be held to a higher standard.

I'll say it. I have helped coach Kevin since he was a freshman. Do I think the score misshap would have changed the outcome u bet I do. No reason for it. I watched the tape with the coaches and no way stalling call on top. And for dad to act like that was a total emarassment to the state of Kansas. Mr. Frame and this forum i wish I could show u the compliment that Kevin's dad paid to to your son this week. Mr. Frame I hope you enjoy watching your sons from afare tomorrow and not being able to share the moments with your sons. I also call out the folks whom allowed for this dad to be mat side and shown his true colors. Coach Means I respect you for trying to do what you could to ease the situation and for trying to pay respect to Kevin. Mike Copeland 9185862714

And I give major respect to coach Kerr for standing up to this idiot for what he did.

Lee, sounds like you weren't in Wichita tonight but when a parents actions towards a kid clears out half the arena stands then it's gone over the top. The coach, administration or KSHSAA needs to come down on this crap.

Jerry, I was not there tonight. I would love to have watched some great wrestling today, but I couldn't make it down. I am glad that I didn't have to witness whatever went on there today though.

I have to admit, I've never seen a parent storm the mat before Friday's fiasco. Banish for the next two seasons?

I was not there but I heard first hand that many of the table workers were not prepared to do their job and some "may have been using their cell phones during wrestling". Cell phones need to be banned from the tables and table workers have to be competent and focused. The lead official should be making sure that the tournament director is giving adequate breaks to the table workers as well as the officials. There is NO WAY a score at the end of regulation should go from 12-8 to 9-9. Hopefully the Maize South 2nd coach or manager was scoring the match but it sounds like they weren't. Mistakes happen but something really wrong went down during this match. It is unfortunate what happened afterwards. This is state and the end of a long season. The kids place tremendous pressure on themselves and they are still just kids. Emotions sometimes overrule rational actions. That being said, it is old news now lets enjoy the matches today! Good job to all of the finalist!

I agree with you 100% on this Will. Cell phones have become a huge distraction. Many people just can't function without them. I predict that if things don't change, twenty years from now we will become known as the bent neck society.

The other reality, even from a seasoned vet of the sport, it is not an easy task to be scoring from the scorers table for a day long tournament. You have to be paying attention, paying keen attention for hours on end. I experienced this at our League Tournament a few years back and after a long day you start to drift a little at times. You don't need another distraction, like a cell phone, to really set you adrift.

Can't figure out why everytime a Goddard wrestler loses everyone cheers. Oh wait, yes I do.

I can't figure out why anyone cheers because a young man lost when that same young man is putting more on the line than 99% of the young men in America will do in high school and loses?

I have no problem with cheering because of the victory of one wrestler but not because of the loss of another!

I choose to cheer for for the winners... not at the stake of the loser!

Goddard, Heights, Maize South, Mill Valley, St. James, Bishop Carroll, KC Harmon, Chanute, Bonner Springs, Norton et al. (ALL High Schools) All have young men doing something weird (Wrestling) which is a good thing while their friends are taking the easy way out and not wrestling (Normal)!

I totally agree but sometimes a parent, coach or athletes actions draws attention to them in a negative way. Most of us has been in this position at some point or another, I know I have. After watching the actions of a parent on Friday night at state I can totally understand why the crowd responded this way. Is it right? Probably not but my questions are this, why did the crowd do this, and had a parent not went onto the mat and screamed directly in the face of one of the very young men you are referring to (one of the nicest, classiest and hardest working kids in the state)would this have even happened? Probably not. Let's not forget the actions that started the whole thing and what appears to be a total lack of remorse or acknowledgement of responsibility.

Since this thread is about dignity and respect and cell phones got brought into the issue, how about the 149 NAIA finals match where the coach in the corner throws the kid a cell phone and the kid takes a selfie? That overshadowed several great sportsmanship moments because lack of judgement on a coach's part, and from his wrestler being fed the fuel to think it was acceptable.
