I know the rules. But there is a difference between the rule and the spirit of the rule. After what I witnessed this past weekend, I am convinced that we MUST transition to the college rule regarding injury time. At the girls regional in Russell, I saw injury time ran on multiple occasions for what seemed like nothing more than to give a wrestler a break. While on some occasions I did witness inhalers being used, many times they were not. Coaches were simply taking a timeout on behalf of their wrestler. This is a shameful practice that undermines the sport for boys and girls. Wrestlers are a different breed. Anyone reading this knows that. We don't take timeouts.
I saw a girl spit out her mouth piece and the ref stopped the match.
Richard, I am assuming that you are talking about my wrestler and me. I have never done that before this weekend. Yes I used an injury timeout in 3 matches with my 130 lb girl. She tested positive with Influenza on Tuesday and was struggling with bbreathing. She had worked her butt off all year and wanted to try and qualify, luckily for us it worked. She almost didn't get to wrestle but was fever free for 48 hours prior to the tournament. And between each match she slept until her next match. This isn't something that I encourage and it wasn't her choice. I made a decision mismatch to try and get some air back in her lungs.
Coach Malay
To be honest, I didn't have any particular wrestler/coach in mind. It was just something that I noticed happening on several occasions as I was watching online over the course of the weekend. I hope she is back at 100%. Hoping EVERYONE is healthy at Hays!
