Kansas Wrestling
Posted By: wrestlingbabe Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 03:49 AM
Just a few things i noticed, and have a couple ?'s about.

I just moved to kansas a couple seasons ago, and have been following alot of the teams through out the seasons. I heard that, that daul would be the one to watch so I went to it. I dont know anyone from either team personally.

First off.....Why did the Clay Center section boo Ross Taplin, I havent watched him since state last year; and he was one of the only few to impress me. That shows a lot of disrespect, Kansas should be proud that we have him here. Has he done something besides tear the kids up from Clay that he has wrestled, is that why you were all booing at him or what? The only time I heard anyone from Abilene boo, was after they announced who won for the tie-breaker.
Another thing is I heard through the greatvine, is that Dennis Charbonneau(Clay Center's Head Coach) wouldn't let Abilene's new heavy weight wrestle. Palmer I think is his name, his dad was one hell of a wrestler from my studies. Palmer had got to Abilene a few weeks ago, and got talked into wrestling or something like that. But there was something about Mr. Charbonneau calling the state to see if he was certified, and Palmer wouldnt offically be certified till after the daul. What was he scared of losing? I talked to 1 of Abilene's spectators after the daul and they said something like Dennis had pulled Mr. Stout (abilenes coach) into his office and made the call to the state right after Mr Charbonneau had seen Palmer.
I have read a lot of talk on Danny Greater, how he is real impressive and one of Kansas's best for the high school level; his match didnt really impress me for all the talk I have heard on him. From looking at the rankings Dylon Jenne is ranked 6th, but he sure had a nice take down on Grater in a close match of 8-4.
I understand the rivalry between the 2 teams, but the booing was just horrible, I had never seen so much direspect for a team and wrestlers who didn't deserve it.
By the end of the daul I was for Abilene, and they came up with the short end. From looking at the 4-A regionals I saw that Abilene and Clay go to the same, I'm sure it will be a mad-house; especially with Santa Fe there(# 3 in 4-A). It will be interesting to watch. Good luck to both teams, but I hope Clay will man-up to a better level and show some respect, and just let the kids wrestle!

First off, I believe that it was a great dual. Both teams did what they could do to win the match. I think it turned out the way I thought it would with Abilene jumping out to the lead and Clay coming back to tie. Congrats to both teams. Now my reaction to your post. I believe Ross Taplin is a great wrestler and a great competitor. If I was the ref. I would have given Clay a point for him taking off his head gear the minute he got the pin. That is just one example of why Clay Center people boo Ross. I guess you weren't at last years regional when it seemed like most of the gym was booing him. Maybe it was just me. Secondly, if their new heavyweight wasn't allowed to wrestle because of state rules, then so be it. I wouldn't blame Coach Charb. for doing what he did because Abilene's coach probably would have done the same thing. It was against the rules. Danny Grater probably didn't wrestling his best match of the year. I also believe that he probably should have rode his opponant when he let him up the last time. That takedown wasn't a good call, and many ex-wrestlers sitting around me agreed. It was a poor call. The kid Danny was wrestling was very good and took the kid from Andale that almost beat Danny earlier in the year into OT at the Baeshor Tourney, so the wrestler is quite good. I believe I heard the Abilene crowd boo a few more times than when Clay was announced the winner. I was surprised how they came up with the winner. Even a ref. sitting next to me didn't know that. This years regional should be quite exciting to watch. I wish everyone the best of luck. My last comment is on the kid from Abilene who wrestled Clay Center's Colby Lund. I thought THAT was poor sportsmanship to try and hurt him by going after his shoulder. I know that it is fair game but I believe that his intent was to hurt Colby and get an injury default (Colby was wearing a brace on his shoulder). Congrats to both teams for a hard-fought dual.

Rules are rules. Now I don't know the whole situation to the hwt thing, but you have to abide by the rules. Where did this Palmer kid come in from? Also are you from Abilene, I recall someone with a similar name being from Abilene.

As for Ross he's the best wrestler in the state hands down, and knowing the Clay Center fans they probably weren't booing him, probably the referee or something. Ross is way to physical for most high schoolers who just do wrestling as a way to stay in shape, he's going to the next level unlike many of his opponents who only are there to fill a roster.
Posted By: Aaron Sweazy Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 04:19 AM
What weight is the Lund you are mentioning...I didn't even look at weights, but I had an idea of who would wrestle that way before you mentioned anything.
Posted By: wrestlingbabe Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 04:27 AM
No, I was at a different regionals last year. But there was booing comming from clays side for ross befor the daul. And for the Lund match, if the ref woulda called more stalling calls then from what i saw, there wouldnt have been any need for abilenes Colby Riffle to try what he was doing at the end of the match.
Another thing, wow it sure is close to regionals and with palmer just getting into the wrestling room not even a week ago, I dont see what the big controversary was about. Give the kid a few matches befor regionals, you never know wether hes good or not. I over heard Mr. Stout talking to a parents befor the daul, and he was saying how he woulda just let the boys wrestle, help them get prepared for a preveiw of regionals. Im not trying to talk bad about Dennis, but seriously the kid was certified right after the daul. It woulda maybe changed the final daul score who knows.
And the tie-breaked thing, I was talking to Mr. Woodford (manhattans head coach) the next day and he said that. that was a new rule in the book as of this season.
Posted By: Aaron Sweazy Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 04:31 AM
It is only a tie breaker because it is a league dual, to my understanding if it were an out of league matchup then it would be a tie. Why couldn't Abilene wrestle Nonamaker?
Posted By: wrestlingfan_211 Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 04:31 AM
Colby Lund wrestled Colby Riffle @125. He was going after the shoulder at the beginning of the match when he had the injury T.O. I have great respect for Ross as a wrestler, I won't ever get tired of watching him wrestle, but I don't respect him as a person at all.
Posted By: Nigel Isom Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 04:47 AM
Aaron the tie breaking system is used in all duals now not just league duals. The only thing I have to say in reply to the original topic is that the last time Clay beat Abilene in a dual and were league champions, Abilene won a state championship, perhaps lighting will strike twice.
Posted By: RedStorm Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 05:16 AM
I wasn't there, which is unfortunate for me, because it featured two great teams coached by two great friends who will be battling it out at the end of this month for the state title.

If I'm from Clay Center, I would probably boo Ross also, I mean, he is from the other team and all. One time, when I was at a KU game I actually booed Darrin Sproles, now how could I do that to a kid from my own state? Oh yeah, because he played for the other team. Yes, yes, I know sportmanship and all that stuff, but c'mon, two teams of this magnitude battling it out on a Friday night and you're suprised that there was booing? hmmm.....maybe you should live here longer and realize that the Clay Center people (great fans) know how great Ross is and that they are just reminding him of that fact.

Not impressed with Danny Grater? Jenne is no slouch, so give him some credit, but I'm not sure what Grater has to do to "impress you." Win a couple state championships? Go undefeated? Hit an underground double-leg with a bacon-straightener finish every match? The kid just wins? Always. And that impresses wrestling fans.

As far as the heavyweight controversy goes, Coach Charbonneau (Dennis as you like to call him) and Coach Stout (Mr. Stout as you like to call him) are two of the most respected and responsible coaches that you will find and I am certain that they both played fairly and applied the rules correctly.

Oh, and as for attacking the kid with a bad shoulder....uh...oh...um...well you see...oh wait, that's right, this is wrestling.
Posted By: Nigel Isom Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 05:22 AM
Well said Coach Dewitt. But what the heck is a bacon straightner!
Posted By: Dingbat Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 06:19 PM
More importantly, what is a "daul?"
Posted By: L Grater Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/07/05 07:22 PM
As for the dual, it was great! The stands were packed and the crowd was intense and into the matches.

Yes, there were some things that happened that weren't in the best sportsmanship probably on either side. It's going to happen in duals like this.

I for one, DID NOT boo Ross! He is a friend and has always treated our family with the upmost respect. Do I always agree with some of the things that happen when anyone wrestles - no, but that is my right! Sometimes when a wrestler is over agressive on the mat and has the "bad guy" attitude while wrestling, it carries over to the crowd. We've always taught our sons to act the same whether your hand is raised at the end of the match or not. Good luck Ross the rest of your season! It's been fun over the years watching Danny and you wrestle!

On the match between Riffel and Colby Lund in my books, was close to being called a back bow. He was also a little rough at times during the match. The ref should have gotten it stopped a little quicker to prevent injury to Colby Lund.

I have to give credit to the Clay Center wrestlers, as they never gave up. When it came down to knowing they had to pin out, they got it done and tied the dual!!

As for Danny Grater (my son), maybe some of you don't know the pressure / goals that he was trying to meet that evening. He knew he wanted a pin to help his team win the dual. He was wrestling probably a little more cautious and didn't want to make any mistakes. He knew where Jenne was ranked and had not wrestled him until that evening. If you watch the tape, it might have been a cheap 2 pts. on the takedown on the out-of-bounds line, but that was the officials call. He was also going for his 100TH CONSECUTIVE WIN that evening. With the win over Jenne (no matter what the score was), he got it. He's a senior and wants the younger wrestlers and his teammates to win a NCKL and State Title or at least have a part of it. He's had that experience and wants to pass it on. There's nothing wrong with that and working to reach those goals!!

I have to add, thanks for the CCCHS coaches for the presentation on his 100th consecutive win after the dual was over. It really meant a lot to him and his family!

The heavyweight thing, rules are rules. There was nothing wrong with Coach Charbonneau and our AD checking it out, as I'm sure Abilene would have done the same thing if we had a wrestler that was questionable and had not received late certification approval from the KSHSAA! Was this wrestler on the team before Nonamaker was injured at Beloit or did he just come out in the last couple of weeks?

Best of luck to both teams in regionals & state! It will be fun watching these wrestlers the next few weeks. However, I am a CCCHS alumni and parent of a CCCHS Wrestlers, so therefore, GO CCCHS TIGERS!!!

Coach Dewitt, im still waiting for answer to the Bacon Straightener. Am I going to have to come to Eudora and see someone do it?
Posted By: RedStorm Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 12:00 AM
Nigel,

It's one of those "secret" moves. You know, when guys like you aren't looking!
Posted By: Nigel Isom Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 12:40 AM
Oh one of "those" moves, well if i ever get down to that area next year I'll have to watch extra hard to revel the secret.
Posted By: Aaron Sweazy Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 12:45 AM
Good point on last time Abilene winning the State title, but I don't think it will be a walk in the park. I'm still sticking with SFT.
Posted By: moma'sboy Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 01:09 AM
Aaron, I can't see how SFT is deep enough. Too many wrestlers that are unproven!! I'm going with Abilene or Clay Center. How good is the Palmer kid. If he is anything like his dad, he would be extremely tough. That might just be enough to put the Cowboys over.
Posted By: Nigel Isom Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 01:39 AM
Well of course it won't be a walk in the park, I think both Abilene and Clay both have an exact equal chance of winning as referenced in the closeness of the teams by the dual, SFT is a question mark in my book, once again state is going to come down to how the regionals are pair at state. I do think a number of Abilene kids who won't make it to the finals will score some major points on the backside.
Posted By: mlite Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 02:42 AM
I was at the regional last year and during the semis taplin slamed the kid he was wrestling and injured him, then the kid was fine to finish the match. The next move taplin delibertly slamed the kid again. With most wrestlers a ref would of called it potentally dangerous. But it was not called. All taplin did was smile the whole time as if it was funny that he had hurt the kid. This is unsportsmanlike and shows the kind of person he is. The regional was in Abliene and when the final matches were announced the whole placed booed him.
Posted By: wrestlerett05 Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 03:02 AM
at regionals last year..taplin might have slammed the kid...but the ref should have called it before it even got that far..and the booing is ridiculous...(we actually like it when people boo him because it just makes him want to go out there and dominate even more, so your makin it worse on yourself to boo him) and taplin did not slam him again..he did the same move..but gently set him down on the mat so he wouldnt get the slam call..ross is a really nice kid..you guys should give him some credit..just becuz he wrestles like a badass and is a true badass doesnt mean you need to talk crap and boo him. good luck to ross and all the abilene wrestlers.
Posted By: Computerized Shoes Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 03:48 AM
I'm scared of that guy.
Posted By: bulldog Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 04:52 AM
Some of the people on this forum need to know this is contact sport. You get slamed ,you bleed, you break bones. That is way Taplin is going to the next level of this great sport. And most of you that are talking crap and booing aren't.
Posted By: Scooby Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 12:06 PM
Wrestling is a rough sport there is no doubt about that. But there is a responsibility for the wrestlers to make sure they wrestler clean and prevent others from injury. I don't get to watch Ross much so I can't comment on him personnal. Wrestling is a tough sport with tough kids but respect is something that is earned. I have won many matches without being the badperson that you speak of. I respected all my fellow competitors and would never hurt them on purpose. I have seen many kids so after someone with the intent to injury and that is what hurts our sport.

The Good wreslters don't have to hurt their competetion- just pin them. If you are a good or if you even think you are a great wrestler then respect your competetion and handle yourself like one of the best in the sport. If you want to fight then find the boxing ring. Slamming someone down is just flat wrong. If the kids gets up and continues it shows he is a true competitor and doesn't want the easy win. For you to use the same move and slam him twice is just uncalled for. My opinion of course
Posted By: hotguns Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 01:19 PM
First of all I just want to say to all you clay center tigers, Abilene wrestled a lot tougher than any of your guys. And the match between Riffel and Lund well if Lund would have wrestled and just not have laid there the whole match none of that would have happened. (but I guess that is what your 103 - 135 pretty much did) To talk about sportmanship Mrs. Grater I don't think Danny showed good sportmanship what he said to Dylan Jenne during the match so don't try to put it on Taplin and Riffel. Oh yea what about all the crap that they wrote about Riffel on the chalk board before the match thats real sportsmanship there. Oh yea Palmer's the **** at 275.
Posted By: Straightshooter Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 06:27 PM
Maybe this is the wrong post to put it on, but why do I keep seeing Clay Center and Abilene as the top teams in the state in 4a? SFT scored much higher than Clay Center at the Rossville tourny and Goodland scored higher than Abilene and SFT at Basehor. I think it is going to be a heckuva state tournament but I wouldn't count out SFT and Goodland.
Posted By: Nigel Isom Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/08/05 11:53 PM
Straightshooter, I think you might want to get your statistics in order or at least check the results before you post. But to save you time I'll help you out

Top 5 scores at the Bashor Bobcat

Turner (Turn) 171.5
Glenwood (Glen) 166
Abilene (Abil) 153.5
Goodland (Good) 143.5
Santa Fe Trail (SFT) 138

Not withstanding the fact the some of Abilene's best wrestlers lost matches that day they shoudln't have. We are talking about total tournament teams here, and both Abilene and Clay are very tough tournament teams this year. Both of these teams will have the good fortune of being at what I perceive to be the easiest regional in 4a this year (similar to Scott City last year) which is the first time its happened to Abilene in as long as I can remember. Both of these teams have to potential of qualifing upwards of 10 guys to the state tourny, and scoring major points on the backside. Of course every team has a chance at state, most people just seem to think that these two teams have the best chance. We will see what happens.
Posted By: wrestlingfan_211 Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/09/05 02:15 AM
I believe that hotguns was mistaken in saying that Abilene wrestled harder than Clay Center did. I believe that all of the kids wrestled as hard as they could. Just because the Clay Center kids fought to stay off their backs, just like Abilene's upper weights did, doesn't mean they didn't wrestle hard.
Posted By: LoveToWrestle Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/09/05 03:05 AM
So what was up with Riffel and Dawson switching weights for the dual, is that what weight they're going to be wrestling at state?
Posted By: chewie Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/09/05 06:04 AM
I wouldn't say that the Concordia regional is the easiest this year. The Fort Scott and Rose Hill regionals don't look to be that tough.
Posted By: Straightshooter Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/09/05 01:42 PM
Nigel
Thanks for the correction on the basehor scores, but I'm sure that a lot of teams had guys lose matches that they shouldn't have, not just Abilene.
I think that SFT has the best dual team in the state, but again you are right that state is won by the best tournament team. It's too bad that Trail and Abilene's big scorers don't match up too well weightwise or we could see them go head to head in alot of matches. Check and see but I think only 125 and 160 are significant weights where they match up with their big guns. I am going with Abilene, SFT, and Goodland in no particular order at state. Don't forget about Columbus though, they'll steal some points away in the mix.
Posted By: Aaron Sweazy Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/14/05 09:57 PM
Woodbine, KS? Hmmm could it be Captain Obvious?

As for the slam situation by Ross last year at regionals I was sitting back and watching it and the ref stopped the match fast after the initial slam, the thing about it was that a lot of air was under his opponent when he brought him down to the mat causing a loud BOOM!

I don't recall ever seeing Ross smile after the guy didn't get up right away, that is just plain ridiculous. Ross went over to his corner and got some water and looked back to make sure the kid was ok while getting some added instruction from his coaches. He didn't do anything unsportsmanlike in his match.

got any clues?

What is his record I heard he beat Spaney a couple of times this year and couldn't believe it did he work out hard in the off season or what
Posted By: Bronco Wrestler Re: Clay Center, Abilene DAUL? - 02/15/05 02:48 AM
he's like 31-6? i think is his record, he beat Spaeny like 8-2 at Minneapolis in the 2nd tourny of the year and then he beat him again the other nite, he was down 3-2 after a very close back and fourth match, he tried throwing him a couple times with about 20 seconds left, then with 4 seconds left he tied up a double underhood drop and threw him straight to his back for a 6-3 or 7-3 decision, i believe it might have been a 7-3, a great match to watch, but no he didn't do anything great in the offseason compared to many other people, he attended our team with us in Iowa and he lifted a little bit for football but not too much emphasis on wrestling, but he's been pushed and is pushing by/for people in the practice room, overall he's become better than before, he has like 132 takedowns this year, which shattered the school record by like 50? it's great he's made me better on my feet for sure, if you have hotmail add me, alexryan86@hotmail.com

I'm not a dip**** I wasn't the one who got booted out of Chapman for not being able to control my temper. At least I have enough brains that if I were to post under another name (other than another one you started using) I wouldn't put the town I'm from or an email address that says my name in it on my bio!

Hey at least I'm a good wrestler, and the only reason I made another name is because the original one I started with wouldn't let me log on at school, so I made another one up. Who wven cares anymore about me getting kicked out of Chapman. (Not me) I think you are the only one talking about that. I 'm a COWBOY!!!

I don't know why you were knocking me Colby considering I've been there to offer you advice in the past and even said I would talk with coaches I know in college and tell them about you. I'm not an enemy. I want to see people make it to the next level to wrestle.

When Nate Smith (former AHS alumn) put up information about CMSU where he wrestled I gave positive endorsement. I've had Nigel Isom and other Abilene guys at my house before (back in the day) when they were in town for track meets to rest and get a snack.

As for being a good wrestler that's all fine and dandy but I was more worried about school to be honest so I would graduate. I didn't do that well in college and was so so in high school. In college I had losses to guys like Muhammed Lawal, Niko Koliastasis, Josh Lambrecht, and Kevin Hoy to name a few all of who were high All Americans. I might not have been a good wrestler like some, but I give back to the sport more than some who were once "good"

Aaron I'm not dogging you i'm just messin around, but I just didn't know why you put captain obvious on the forum. Yeah you been around me in the past and I respect you. And If you were going to talk to coaches for me why haven't you yet. I plan on going out to Colby to talk to Coach Lampe, and the way things are going i will graduate. I only called you a dip **** because i know how you act.

Colby if you plan on going to colby the deadline for scholarships from the school was Feb. 15, i'm not sure about athletic scholarships but that's where i'm headed, i'm not sure if they still give them out or not, but you it's an open admissions policy so getting in won't be hard, but if ya need anything talk to Coach Voss too while you're there (he's a cousin of mine), or email me alexryan86@hotmail.com

Colby I've talked to plenty of coaches about you from Minnesota State Mankato to Binghampton (DI). I told them you have the talent and could do well at the next level if utilized properly in their lineup. But a lot of coaches don't like the fact you were expelled which school background comes with the territory whether you like it or not.
