Wrestling is a strange mistress. Sometimes she treats you right, some time she chews you up, spits you out, then stomps all over your nards with combat boots.

So post it up, boys and girls: most heartbreaking match you've ever witnessed for your team or for the opposing wrestler/opposing team.

To name a few:

Trent Van Eaton of Stockton losing the 1993 321A 171 State Final in overtime 8-6 to (I Believe?) Matt Martin of Eudora

Jeff Dannenberg of Osborne losing the 1997 321A 130 State Final in overtime 4-2 to Scott Jenkins of St. Francis.

Brandon Pfeifer of Ellis losing the 1998 321A 160 Final in overtime 9-7 to Tyler Grandclair of Hoisington.

All three were fabulous wrestlers, each a senior, and no state titles to show for it.

This doesn't do with heartbreaking, more like chair breaking.

Manhattan-Free State dual at Ottawa where the big heavies went through and demolished a steel chair.

-Seeing neil erissmen (desoto) losing in overtime in the state finals to luedke(cant remember) at 145lbs last yr. it was erissmen's first loss of the yr too.

-Watching kevin gray (topeka high) lose in the semi-finals of state on a fake injury default by shawn dedrick at 112lbs. Gray was up by like 10 pts and ran a half and dedrick claimed it injured his neck, so gray was DQed. Then in the consolation bracket he lost in double overtime to corey wright to place. he definitely got a big ol kick in the junk at state his senior yr.

Not really a major match, but one that taught me a good lesson. I was leading Damon Thompson of Silver Lake 12-9 in the 152 lbs. finals of the St. Mary's Tournament in 1997. There were 6 seconds left and I hadn't been warned once for stalling. We went out of bounds and came back to the middle. All I had to do was run laps for 6 seconds to secure the win and the championship. Thompson just ran at me and hit a wild (but dead-on) headlock, taking me to my back, and giving up 2 for the takedown and 2 nearfall. Getting tossed like that brought me the (short-lived) nickname "Giraffe-neck" from my teammates. Never got tossed like that again, though.

This one is probably not remembered by many but in the state semi's 1991 (I think) 130lbs. from Augusta was winning the match by 6(?) points after the second period, was pinning a Spring Hill wrestler and figure foured his head. The SH wrestler started screaming and the match was stopped. Sh wrestler was "injured" Augusta's figure four had slipped to a scissors (while not apparent to onlookers) and he was told by the officials on the mat that it was not his hold that had injured the SH wrestler. They brought out the head official (who was carrying a cup of coffee from the break area and had not seen the match) and the SH wrestler was awarded the victory, Augusta was DQ'd. SH wrestler was later seen turning his head quite quickly and nimbly the next day at the state tournament. I'm not saying he wasn't injured that day, but there wasn't a finals match in the weight class that year.

Two years ago when Tyler McCormick slipped and fell with about eleven seconds left, giving a lucky takedown to then freshman Joseph Cornejo in the semi-finals of state. McCormick was 42-0 I think and had set the single season record for wins. Luckily though he was just a junior and he came back and tore through everyone this year.

hearing that cody garcia(112) getting thrown in the state semi's by charles knox and losing. he wouldve been a three timer if it werent for that throw. i say three cause this yr he will tear up the competition and definitely win state.

How about 1991 when David Seamans of Spring Hill, upset undefeated and defending state champ Josh Gooch from Wellington @ 189. I know as his former teammate we were all disappointed for him. To this day I have not seen a wrestler with Gooch's abilty in the 189 class. What a dream match up it would be to see a Josh Gooch, Justin Dyer match.

I know the feeling that old Boviard had but instead of at St.Mary's...mine was at Regionals with the same situation exactly...got hit though with a headlock to lose the match in the consolation semis and failed to qualify for state.

Another one from the 1991 5A state finals was when Matt Biles of Bonner Springs had Chris Hernandez of Arkansas City on his back 15 seconds into the match and had him there the entire first period...The assistant referee was calling for the pin, but the head ref wouldn't call it...Matt then rolled his ankle in the second period and Hernandez took advantage of it and ended up winning the title...Everyone in the Coliseum knew that Hernandez got his backside whipped and Biles got screwed, but that's the way it went for Arkansas City wrestlers in those days...

how about in 1999 when jason ross of spring hill was in the finals, he hadn't had one back point scored on him all year and then in the finals at state he gets tossed and pinned.

How about last year in the state semi's in 5a. It was Frankie( kapun) vs. Josh Miller (Seaman) It was in ot and miller was taken down and pinned. then to find out that he was beaten by a freshman.

The wrestler from Kapaun was Frank Jonas, who also won the State Championship.

I believe that I did mention who he was and what school.

I would have to say that the one that made me cry like a little girl was when Hemmerling beat Carrol

Phil Hart losing in the finals in Lee Summit to some top notch guy from Missouri. This guy made the manimal Phil look like a lost puppy at sea.

probably seeing luke page get pinned in the first round of state a couple years ago. that really sucked. and when he got pinned in the finals the year before that.

so ur telling me that he went from being a state finalist to going two and out at state the following yr?

As I remember it, Page was one and done, disqualified for smashing through a glass fire extinguisher case after his first match.
Posted By: rocknraider Re: Most heartbreaking match ever. - 10/27/03 06:05 PM
i heard something like that. something about him being escorted out by the cops. if that happened to me, id probably flip out too.

I remember Beau Tillman of Pratt, wrestling Jeremy Long of Santa Fe Trail at 119 pounds, sometime in the mid-90's when they were both juniors. Long had a tremendous headlock and very little else-- Tillman had about everything you can develop. Tillman is up by 8 or 9 points late in the match, absolutely monopolizing the contest, Ties up with Long and gets into the headlock that won Long 4 state titles. Tillman went on to three titles, and will always know that he had the ability to win that fourth one, just made an unlucky move.

In the early 90's, Chad Drake from Andover was wrestling in the semifinals at the 4A State Championships. Chad's father was terminally ill and was wheeled into the Coliseum to watch his son wrestle for perhaps the final time. Chad was ahead in the match with just seconds to go when a whistle was blown on the adjoing mat.

Chad, hearing the whistle and believing his match was over, released his opponent.

The opponent received an escape point and also a quick takedown while Chad thought the match was over, resulting in a one point loss for Chad Drake.

I believe Matt Bradshaw was winning by four points with 10 seconds or so left, and then he got reversed and put to his back when he was a sophomore...however he went on to win two state titles and be superamazing...so I guess it doesn't count as MOST heartbreaking, since he got another chance.

Jhris touched on it earlier, but I won't bring it up now, for I don't want to cry. No amount of consoling from CoachTwink's attractive wife could ease the pain of that one.

Most heartbreaking match I ever had. Well, I'm not as good as some of you. My most heartbreaking match wasn't at the state tournament. It was at the Tri-Valley League tournament (really a round robbin of duals) my junior year.

I had to face a Eureka wrestler named Clark Neill, who was a senior. Now, 3 weeks earlier at the Fredonia tournament, he had pinned me twice, both in the first period. However, I was studying his match with a Burlington wrestler before I had to face him. The Burlington wrestler (Manwaring, I think) got pinned pretty quickly, but I noticed one thing he did right that I didn't do in either of my previous matches with Neill. He tied up with him, Neill was struggling when he tied up. I said to myself. "That's it, I'm gonna beat him by doing that." By the time our match had hit, all the rest of the mats were empty, and everyone was watching our match, so the atmosphere was electric.

As our match began, I was stoked up. By the end of the first period, he had a 2-0 lead.

I started the 2nd period down. I immediately hit a switch on him and it worked to perfection. Most of the 2nd period was me trying to work a half-nelson on him, but he was resisting. He got called for stalling, so I was up 3-2!

He started the 3rd period down. He was working and eventually got a reverse on me to go up 3-4. I was trying to stand up and escape, but to no avail. I went out of bounds with 3 seconds left. My team was going nuts, Eureka's team was going nuts, the whole crowd was going nuts. I got back down, got immediately on my feet, threw my hips out, and ran all the way to the side of the mat, I turned to face him and the ref signaled the one point for an escape, but the other 2 referees who were watching the match closely said that I didn't escape! (It really was the right call... but still... UGH!!!! ). The crowd was so loud, you couldn't even hear the buzzer.

For the longest time (I'm a freshman in college now), I went over in my mind what I could have done differently, what if I did get the escape off in time and It did go into overtime? That was the one match that broke my heart. By the time I got back to my team, they were saying "NATHAN!!!! THAT WAS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!" My coach said that's the best dang match he'd seen all night.

What's worse about the match is, I hadn't got a gold medal in ANYTHING since I was in 8th grade. If I won that match, I would have gotten a gold medal in wrestling and it would have been my only one in high school (I didn't recieve one my senior year, although I did qualify for state).

That's the match that broke my heart. Even thinking about it got my pulse racing.

Not that I spend a lot of time sitting around feeling sorry for Hoxie, but remember the Dykstra-Baker match in the semi-finals at state about 4-5 years ago................. I suppose I went and started some **** and opened some old wounds with that one.

i have one to share.

It was the semi's last yr at regionals at BVW. i teched the kid in the quarterfinals and was poised to face chino elsrode of olathe south (took 3rd @ state). Previously during the season i had lost two close matches to him and had beaten him my soph yr. we both definitely knew each other's style at this point.

Came out like a pro and got the first takedown, rode him and then got switched. i got an escape somewhere. then took him down one more time and was reversed again. to say the least, he is one squirrely son of a gun...just couldnt hold on to him. i took him down again.

by the third period i was down 5-6 and took him down for a 7-6 lead. with 40 seconds left, i was trying to ride him out, but he hit a switch on me and got the reversal. score was 8-7 and there was 10 seconds left in the match. I hit a switch and he is flat out on his butt with his arms wrapped around my waist, fighting not to get reversed. My face was buried into the mat and in my opinion i thought i had the reversal. i prayed that the ref would give me the call, but to no avail time runs out and i lose 8-7. one of the worse losses of my life.
