who made it to the post season in football?
in the NWKL, St. Francis, 7-2 is in the play offs, Oakley, 9-0 is in, as well as Hoxie, 6-3, Oberlin, 5-4, and Atwood survived at 3-6.

http://www.kansas.com/mld/kansas/sports/high_school/ This is the website for the Wichita Eagle, they have the first round of playoffs for next week listed in today' paper.
NCKL gets some tough draws right off the back in most of the matchups:
Abilene v. Wichita Collegiate
Concordia v. Hugoton
Clay Center v. Ulysses
I think Chapman has the easiest route of the NCKL teams in a very tough Andover!
Wellington defeated the Mulvane Wildcats,28-13 Thursday night. We play the Augusta Orioles first round.
Scotty,
Wellington has a tough road...if they beat Augusta they get the Abilene/Collegiate winner and then more than likely the Andale/Hugoton 2nd round winner. Tough road.
You can find all of the various classes, using the KSHSAA website.

Chapman is going on into Regionals after defeating Andover. Great game, can't wait until Saturday. Abilene and Clay Center both lost but I don't know about Concordia. Still, four teams from the same league in the playoff's is pretty impressive.

Concordia won in OT tonight 35-34 over 8-1 now 8-2 Hugoton. Hugoton got behind 35-28 in OT, scored, but pulled a Chapman and missed the point after...thus 35-34 was the final.
Chanute is moving on after beating Labette last night 35-14. 9-1 on the year with their only lose to Labette early in the season.. They will play Baldwin @ Baldwin on Saturday..Go Comets! It's been 70 years since CHS has won the league out right.
Lansing has Holton @ Lansing this Saturday.

I think the most interesting 2nd round match-up may be Caney Valley(10-0) @ Conway Springs(9-1).
Normally you would think Conway would win since their only loss is to Garden Plain but Conway's starting QB (also CB, KR, & Pr) broke his jaw in two places in their last regional game. Also, their backup QB broke his collarbone a couple of weeks ago. So there best WR now starts @ QB. Could be an early exit...Has Caney played anyone tough this year??

You think Sacred Heart will beat Smith Center or is that just a typo. Smith Center dominates in football and I really don't see it coming to an end at Regional's. They are one of the teams that will always find a way to win. Salina is a good town but Sacred Heart better beware
smith is picked by 44, teams on the left are favorites, teams in CAPS are home teams.
I ran the board last week for Sacred Heart football. When I heard they had Smith Center in round 2 I started to cringe.

First game of the season, we had some jitters and all that good stuff..such as our QB threw 5 picks. I really think that if it was in the middle of the season, we could of pulled out the win. But we will never know now, we lost to Frontenac 6-20 on Tuesday, making us 7-3 on the season, which is now over

. We had some great guys on our squad, Geoff Reeves, our all state wide out who is being recruited by an Ivy leauge college and Andrew Hedges who is bein looked at by D 1 colleges.
I had fun this season, as a freshman it was a blast. As the biggest 3A school in kansas..we had nearly 30 freshmen out, and look to increase that number by the time we are seniors..so if you play us in the near future..LOOK OUT! MUH HAHA..
oh, and in wrestling too, lol
but since caney is in the tri valley, i gotta root for them now.
GO BULLPUPS
Remington plays Uniontown tomorrow after THE most exciting football game I've ever seen in the Remington vs. Moundridge game last week that went into overtime. It's been exciting watching the boys go 9-1, especially considering they went 0-9, 0-9, 5-5 the past three years.
Two of the Remington boys qualified for state wrestling 321a last year, and one of them medaled. We're hoping to be even stronger this year with some upcoming talent and maturity of some of our team.
St. Francis defeats St. John 48-0, Hoxie beats Claflin 16-6, and if Oakley advances that will mean 3 of the 8 final teams in 2-1a will be from the northwest kansas league! St. Francis 9-2, Oakley 11-0 and Hoxie, 8-3.
if Oakley advances, Oakley and Hoxie meet up in sectionals, Oakley beat Hoxie 8-6 in week 3 of league play, that will be a great rematch!
tough wrestling teams and tough football teams as well.
Chapman won tonight 26-24 over Rose Hill, it was a great game, I was listening to it on the radio. Jon Arveson ( one of our very own ) took the ball to the 1/2 yard line of Rose Hill on 4th down and couldn't put it in. Then Rose Hill drove all the way down to likw the Chapman 18 and then missed a field goal.
Great job Jon, I look forward to seeing you wrestle this year.
P.S On a side note I can't believe I was actually chearing for our most hated rivals.

Lets just hope Aaron doesn't follow football or we'll never hear the end of it!
Jon did a great job as usual for Chapman (he is just fun to watch period-no matter what sport). However, it was the Chapman defense that stepped up big again tonight. What I like the most about Chapman football is that it is truly a TEAM. Everyone makes a huge play in every game. They all play hard and everyone is a part of the program. Great game! Go IRISH!!!!
it was a very entertaining game. i caught the Hope vs. Baileyville 8man game at 2 (blowout for Hope), then i made it up to watch the Chapman game at 7. the score was close throughout the entire game and Chapman really took advantage of big plays on offense.
Unfortunately Swayz follows the Chapman Irish football team, he called me for the Ulysses Pratt score. 45-9 by way of Ulysses in case anyone wanted to know.
tuffEnuff2 - I find it interesting that since you started this thread that 3 of the 5 you mentioned are still in it (although that number will drop by 1-2 next weekend due to meet-ups). Remington won Regionals last night - down by 7 when they score their final TD. With 5 seconds left on the clock they gamble and go for 2, winning the game. Another intense game!
I do follow football, I was a 2x NJCAA football anouncer for Butler's championship teams in 98 and 99. But as much as we are mentioning Arveson, don't forget Will Irvine who is a wrestler as well. In the last 2 weeks he's had Interceptions on late drives to seal wins for the Irish.
Yeah but according to Will, he is burned out and so is not going to go out for wrestling this year. He will be surely missed but it is his choice. Jon is ready and can't wait for wrestling to start. He is going to be our team leader this year.
Will not going out for wrestling? If that is the case it's probably because he could have been a multiple placer by now, but has had bad injuries that have tripped him up during the season. I'll believe it when I see it though.
holton beat lansing 36-7. Though the first half was extremely good with holton leading 10-7 but lansing came out in the second half flat footed and holton built a 29-7 lead goin into the 4th quarter.
Augusta beat Collegiate yesterday 40-28. Next they go to Andale, who is the only team to beat them this year. BUT, Harrison Dreiling was out hurt that game, so next Friday should be alot more interesting with him back at 100%. And, Chris Stuart (also a wrestler) has been playing great the last few weeks for Augusta on both defense and offense.
For those wrestlers who are still in the playoffs, what are your schools doing about wrestling practice? Since this is buffer week are you going straight into wrestling as soon as your football season is over? Are you getting a week off? Are you going to have both wrestling practice AND football practice starting next week?
I really doubt if any football coach would allow his kids to begin wrestling yet, or if the wrestling coach would let thim in the room until he finishes the football season. Any time lost in the wrestling room will be made up for with a winning attitude brought over from football.
Some pretty good wrestling teams are still playing football. Ulysses vs. Chapman. The exception is Hayden, who scored a whopping 0.0 last season. Ulysses starts 3 soph's on defense, all are wrestlers. Heckel, Landeros, and Orosco. I'll pick Ulysses by 10 in a tough ballgame.
My son who is on the Chapman football team is also a wrestler. We talked to his wrestling coach who said that the first two weeks are just conditioning and what he is doing on the field is just as good as what he would be doing on the wrestling mat. Beside, him and his friends have been hitting the mat after football practice whenever they can. If anything, the excitement that is surrounding our school is just going to help pump up the athletes for the next round whether it is wrestling or basketball.
On the Ulysses vs. Chapman game: I have faith in our coaches and players. I believe the game will be another nail-biter finish.
Yep...sounds like you guys are playing well. You have to be excited about your season. I disagree about the first two weeks being "Just" conditioning. I think that's when we work technique-drill, technique-drill etc.. Still, success breeds success.
My thoughts on the Ulysses v. Chapman matchup....
Chapman can't afford to make errors as they have in the previous two games against a team like Ulysses. Chapman was on the 1 yard line and couldn't score last week! Turnovers need to decrease and Arveson needs to have recievers awake and catching.
Some weirdness to the mix:
Ulysses one loss came to Hays 3-0, Hays was unimpressive in beating Marysville, but snapped Salina Souths district win streak this year in 5a.
Common Opponent for Ulysses and Chapman is Clay Center whom both played at their respective homes: Ulysses won by 35 points and Chapman won by 31 points...so only 4 points difference in a similar opponent.
Ulysses has outscored opponents 460-67 (Against teams that made the playoffs 50 of the 67 points have been scored by the opposition which was 5 games).
Chapman has outscored opponents 246-135 on the year (Against teamst that made the playoffs in Kansas, their 5 opponents only managed 36 total points, 24 of which came against Rose Hill. Chapman shut out 3 playoff teams on the year)
And shame on Jeff for saying football could get you ready for Wrestling. Im going to have to have a talk with him.
I think that Chapman will have to pass a lot to beat Ulysses. Pratt didn't have the speed to match up to the Tiger running game, and if Chapman is not really fast they better be putting some points up on a real regular basis. Ulysses will come at you in all aspects of the game. I have recently been in Manhattan working on a boat ramp and listen to WIBW splrts. To listen to them, the ONLY 4a teams that exist are Hayden and Holton, with possibly Collegiate (which we now know was wrong)being a factor in 4a, Although Greg Sharpe has said that 4a is ungodly tough this season. The biggest thing about that is that while I hear him mention western teams in all the other classes, I haven't heard mention of Ulysses up to the second round when I stopped listening to the program. I am here to tell you, Ulysses is not a team to overlook. I honestly believe that Chapman has way more than they can handle in Ulysses, especially since they have to go to the end of the river Styx to play them. They will encounter the most hostile crowd that they have seen this season, and it is really easy to lose focus when confronted with the environment that they will encounter both on and off the field.
winter sports practice starts monday nov 14.
as far as Gabel is concerned, kids not out for football, (which in St. Francis is everybody is out for football), are obligated to show up monday the 14th. so since no one will be there the mats will still be out ready and waiting in the practice room regardless. even after the football season is over athletes have the option to take a week off before reporting to wrestling pratice. although most dont take the week off in order to prepare for the first tournament of the season.
Sainty is focused on the task of preparing for Smith center this friday. a rematch from last year sectionals championship, a game that Sainty has not forgotten. should be a great game since Smith and Saint run identical offenses and styles not to mention Lambert is a former player from Smith center.

If Chapman looks at stats and plays the way they've been playing on last second miracles Ulysses will thump them. On the bright side Ulysses has lost this year to a team Chapman didn't want to play (Hayes offered but we took on Blair Oaks instead) Oh well...next year Blair Oaks gets replaced with Pratt which could be fun.

Section 1: General Regulations (none)
Section 2: Senior High Regulations
Art. 1: Practice shall not begin prior to Monday of Standardized Calendar Week #20.
a. A student who has been out for a fall sport shall not start practice until after the team on which he competed or had membership in a fall sport, has completed its season.
NOTE: A cross country or football participant is considered as having completed such season, if he does not qualify for entry in the state cross country meet or is not continued on the squad when a team advances to the football play-off series.
As hard as it is for adults to admit, kids get tired. I think that mostly they get tired of being on a tight schedule. Physically, after a few days, they should be good to switch sports, but I remember when I was in HS it was great to have that week off. Usually, about Wednesday, it was time to get back to work. Coach Gable has the right idea on that. What you do in late February is much more important than what you do in late November.

I would like to say congrats to smith center on one heck of a game. We lost to you guys 20-14 lastnite. Both teams played their butts off to win the game and they came out on top, in a game that didn't have any scoring in the second half. Congrats and kick oakley's ass.
My hat is off to Ulysses. You guys are really good. I am sad to see the Chapman season end but I am still so proud of what they have accomplished. For a team that was ranked 5th in their league, they have shown that they can win. We are a young team with many players who will be returning next year. Now, its on to cheer for my relatives on the Hayden team as they take on Holton next week in a game that should actually be the state championship game. On the plus side, we can start getting ready for the wrestling and basketball season. We are going to be a really young team in wrestling this year with little expectations so hopefully, we will do what the football team did - play with a lot of heart and determination.
What was the final score? I think the momentum killer was when Chapman didn't score right before halftime to bring it within 1 score.
Found it interesting that of the 5 NWKL schools - two (Hoxie & Atwood) were knocked out of the playoffs by a team from their own league and the other three (Oberlin, Sainty and Oakley) were knocked out by Smith Center.
