What are some of your thoughts on what the perfect kansas wrestling team would be at every weight.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 03:00 AM
How bout the best kansas wrestler at each weight regaurdless of the year? That would be tough to pick.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 03:04 AM
hmmmm i see now that my posted topic is gay and useless...carry on and never mind it again
Posted By: John Johnston Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 05:21 PM
I'll take a shot at it:

103 - Devin Schwartz
112 - Eric Akin/Austin Devoe
119 - Shawn Bunch/Tanner Gardner
125 - Zach Roberson/Bo Maynes
130 - Justin Ware
135 - Dusty Spaulding/Stewart Bogart
140 - Jarod Vogel
145 - Joe Johnston/Andy Tieben
152 - Chris Hernandez/Justin Thaw
160 - Jacob Klein
171 - Scott Coleman/Kelly Gabel
189 - Melvin Douglas/Justin Dyer/Scott Urban/Jeremy Lay
215 - Wes Walker/Josh Carroll
275 - Jeremiah Beltran/Andrew Ubben

Help me out with backups in the weights that are missing.
Posted By: Powerlion Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 05:41 PM
What about jeff boyel (sp) from norton for the best heavyweight? he was ranked no. 1 in the nation.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 05:52 PM
Norton's Boyle was definitely the most dominating Kansas heavyweight of all time. 3X state champ, his senior year he won by fall in the state finals in 19 seconds. He competed in the dapper dan classic in PA instead of going to high school nationals...now plays for the Bengals...

Also, didn't Hemmerling beat Carroll @ 215 last year?
Posted By: usawks1 Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 06:51 PM
I would throw Brent Rechtfertig in the mix at 140. Wellsville's 3-time State Champ was an animal as a senior. Gained a first period pin! He wrestled in the late 80's.
Posted By: John Johnston Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 07:08 PM
Forgot about Doug Hoover; where would he fit (130)?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 07:12 PM
what about jeremy long
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 07:15 PM
215 is Charles Chainey of Wyandotte. Anyone who didnt see him surely doesnt appreciate what a great athlete and wrestler he was by the end of his senior year. He was amazing.
Posted By: Coach B Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 07:39 PM
Josh Gooch of Welling at 215 possibly. Beau Tillman of Pratt perhaps. Sure he was beat in the finals by Long in a headlock with seconds to go in the match, but he was leading by 8 at the time. If they wrestled again, I doubt Long gets the headlock. Cool thread though..
Posted By: Ron James Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 10:59 PM
Luke Metzler (3x champ) beat Devin Schwartz
Posted By: Ron James Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/04/03 11:02 PM
How far back are we going because Al Martinez was a 3x champ in 60-61-62 at 103-112-112 back when it was still Grand State
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 12:58 AM
Westphal--
Pretty sure Charles Chaney of Wyandotte finished with a loss his senior year. Do you know who beat him?
Posted By: Prant Garker Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 01:14 AM
I think the most exciting match would be Bunch vs. Gardner. Who do you think would win?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 01:39 AM
bunch
Posted By: BigPin22 Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 01:40 AM
Bunch, he was one of the most talented athletes I have ever seen, and Tanner is alot smaller!! It wouldn't even be close!!
Posted By: rocknraider Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 02:39 AM
tanner for 103 or metzler
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 02:49 AM
are there any 4x state champions?
Posted By: BigPin22 Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 03:01 AM
I think you need to use the wrestlers senior weight to make this topic even worth discussing!
Luke was the 103lbs. state champ as a sophmore and then went on to win two more titles ending up at 125lbs. and I believe Tanner got fourth place at 103lbs. as a sophmore and then won 112lbs. as a junior and should win his last one at 119lbs. this year.
With that comparison I would have to take Luke.
I personally wanted to see Metzler and Hoover wrestle, I think Metzler would have won!
Posted By: bigkneepads#2 Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 03:06 AM
Boyle would decimate any HWT ever, I agree. You're a little off on some of the facts about football, though. Knee injuries prevented him from ever becoming much of a pro football player, but he is the strength coach for Marshall University and also coaches on the sidelines during games. Look for the really, really buff coach if you're watching on TV!!
Posted By: Prant Garker Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 03:08 AM
Perhaps you should have lent him some of your bigkneepads! HA! Ba-dum, CHING!
Posted By: chewbacca Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 03:54 AM
145-joe johnston/Brandon Pfizenmaier
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 03:59 AM
Big kneepads--
While I respect your mad knowledge, I must dispute your last post. The last time I talked to Jeff (granted, that was one year ago during Christmas break), he was still on the practice squad for the Bengals. He didn't suit up for games, but still was an NFL football player. However, he had mentioned knee problems and his desire to work as a strength coach. But I didn't know he is at Marshall now. Props to him.
Posted By: Coach Alley Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 04:05 AM
I'll add a few names I'm partial to. How about Todd Drake anywhere from 103 to 126. He was a 4 timer and went 126 - 1 plus a 3 time NCAA II All-American and National Champ. Another is Marc Hull, 2X champ,2X Runnerup, 3X All-American and 1X National Champ. Marc could also fit in from 112 to 130. And at 160, I'd take Shawn Silvis on my team. 2x Champ, 4X Placer and NCAA II Champ. Another to consider at 130 is Chris Saferite, 2X Champ, 4X Placer and NCAA II Runnerup. I know he lost to Long in the finals but his accomplishments after high school excell.

Arn't we leaving out roberson an maynes...
Posted By: ksfanincarolina Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 05:14 AM
A few more-

152: Temoer Terry (McPherson) 3X SC
103: Daniel Escalante (ONorth) senior SC
119: Chris Ngo (Concordia) 3X SC
130: Devin Bahm (Ark City) 4X SC
135: Allen Hankins (Ark City) 3X SC
Posted By: Renton Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 05:22 AM
How about a few old school guys:

Roy Oeser
Doug Duell
Kirk Baker
Matt Treaster
Wes Harding
Aaron Shelton

And a couple recent guys like:
Brent Brandyberry
Billy Gabel
Posted By: Jason A. Ross Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 01:00 PM
Matt Treaster was an awesome wrestler but i believe he got his 4 titles in missouri.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 01:22 PM
How about Joe Nelson from Wichita South at 189? He was a 3x state champ. and undefeated over a couple of years - he was awesome!!

Also, Bill Brine from Goddard at 171 - he was a 2xer (moved here from out of state), 5A sr. wrester of the year in 99 and a Jr. Freestyle AA Also pinned Kelly Gabel who is on the list.
Posted By: Ron James Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 02:28 PM
Matt Treaster wrestled for Beloit. He would still dominate.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 02:56 PM
At 145, Travis Stites-McPherson, a 4X state champion, fierce competitor and maybe the best conditioned wrestler I have seen, would be the #1 choice.
Posted By: Coach Shelton Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 03:07 PM
Here are my picks:

103 - Devin Schwartz or Aaron Shelton
112 - Corey Jones
119 - Shawn Bunch
125 - Robertson or Maynes
130 - Wes Harding
135 - Dusty Spaulding or Devin Bahm
140 - Brandon Pfizemaier or Travis Stites
145 - Todd Layton
152 - Temoer Terry
160 - Roy Oeser
171 - Scott Coleman
189 - Melvin DOuglas
215 - Blake Seiler or Wes Walker or Sean O'brien
275 - Jerry Corner or Jeff Boyle

Brian Shelton
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 03:41 PM
In answer to the question of Charles Chainey's loss it was the second match of the year to Parker of Manhatten who was a state champion, 4-3 at the Highland Park Tourney. Charles wrestled him again at the East West match and beat him 14-5. It took Charles a bit to figure out just how good he was but once it dawned on him he turned into a big machine. Best low single leg series of any wrestler I ever coached. He was a good one.
Posted By: DOUG MOORE Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 04:01 PM
I know I will be showing my age here, but I think Roger Fisher from Norton was probably the best little man ever. Two state titles at 95lbs. and one at 98lbs. his senior year.
Posted By: Les Brown Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 05:02 PM
Never got to see him in his peak form, but even 20 years after the fact Colby CC coach Steve Lampe was still pretty incredible.

3x state champ for Colby High School
multiple year letterwinner at Iowa State University
NCAA All-American
2x World Team Trials runner-up
AAU freestyle All-American
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 06:08 PM
What about Gerrad Speer at 215 from Scott City. He showed tremendous talent over his 4 year career being a 3XSC and only lost 3 matches his entire high school career. Also what about all those kids who came from Hoxie, Garden City, Colby, Goodland, Oakley, St. Francis(Gabel's, Jenkins), Scott City, and Ulysses
Posted By: Coach B Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 08:29 PM
The best little man may have been Todd Johnson of Beloit. His older brother Toby was not too bad either.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 08:34 PM
Bill Gabel would definately go somewhere on this team, perhaps 135...Who would you pick as a coach? Maybe his dad coach Larry Gabel?
Posted By: havid deidrick Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 09:07 PM
i would take speer at 215, how bout matt gilliland, isnt he goin for his fourth state title? and matt pyle is a very good 145, JUSTIN DYER at 189! gabe conaghan at 171 a possibility?
Posted By: sportsfan02 Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 09:44 PM
Coach Alley,

Coach Shelton doesn't put one of your kids on his fantasy team? Time to warm up the Photoshop!
Posted By: Schulz_125 Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 10:33 PM
travis stites,4 timer
Posted By: Prant Garker Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/05/03 11:15 PM
Dyer's got to be right up there for 189.

But as for Conaghan, as good as he was, Coleman would work him. That guy's good.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 12:46 AM
I'm a little biased, but for coaches I'd have to go with Bill Pickenpaugh (Hoxie) also in the KWCA hall of fame. Or Kirk Baker (Hoxie), last 13 years 6 team state championships, about to win another this year.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 12:49 AM
i didnt know this about my school until yesterday, but back in the 70's a guy named scott luscien (sp) was a 3x state champ, but my coach told me that the guy could have easily been a 4x state champ but shawnee mission school district at that time had 3 year high schools and did not allow 9th graders in junior high to wrestle.
Posted By: Jim Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 01:12 AM
171 lbs Chad Koop from West Elk he was a 2x SC and placed 3rd twice i believe and was also a NWCA HS National Champion his senior year.
Posted By: LoveToWrestle Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 03:39 AM
what do you guys think about dustin may, he was a 4x state champion he probably deserves to be in there somewhere
Posted By: Prant Garker Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 03:49 AM
I know from talking to a lot of people that May was an amazing wrestler, but most people find it hard to consider him the greatest ever at his weight. Perhaps it was because of his style, or perhaps there are other reasons. I just know that his senior year, a lot of people thought Matt Murray was a better wrestler than May. I'm not taking away his accomplishments at all, (to say a 4 timer is unimpressive is absurd), I just don't think he was the best EVER.
Posted By: ksfanincarolina Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 03:54 AM
May probably had to work harder than any other 4-timer to get his SC's. Check out his finals scores: 10-8 OT, 5-3 OT, 4-3, and 12-6.
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 05:49 AM
I am really going to show my age here but Stan Falkender from St. Francis and Quenton Horning from Norton as well as Steve Lampe and Doug Duell are the finest wrestlers I have ever seen in the state of Kansas. I know a lot of people outside of Western Kansas (yes I did capitalize Western) didnt get a chance to see them but they were amazing. I saw them and I have seen everyone since then and I never saw anyone like them in this state. Some of you old timers like me might have seen them. Fisher was a tough little dude too. That was the hey day of the NWKL. They were no fun to draw I can tell you that. Gary Walters of Sainty was another one and J.D. Armstrong of Liberal was another. They were awfully tough.
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 05:54 AM
As for coaches. The best coach I ever coached against was Delber Erickson of Newton. Delbert was a very quiet guy but he could get more out of his marginal kids than anyone I have seen. He won several state championships at Newton High and they haven't won much since he left there. Jake Durham at Norton was a great one too. There was a great one for many years that coached a lot of places and never really got his due and that was my great late friend Gerald Sadowski. If they ever gave an award for class I salute him for it and I miss him.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 07:32 PM
What about Jonny McCreary @ 152 and Tyson Biddle @ 140
Posted By: Coach B Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 08:11 PM
Hey westphahl, did you coach against Ken Piazza?

Who is the best coach currently? I vote for John Flores. What he has accomplished at two different schools is amazing!! Look at the Leoti program now--is it still existent?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 08:44 PM

Did C. Chaney place at nationals? I know he was a bad-a in high school. I think that all-american should be a requirement for this fantasy team.

Super-Duper (at what I don't know) Boyle was on the practice squad with the Bengals last year. He tore his ACL again and suffered nerve damage which ended his career. He's in Marshall getting his master's and is Grad Assistant Strength Trainer.
Posted By: coachtwink Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/06/03 08:54 PM
D- Jeff Boyle was with the Bengals, but tore his ACL last year and had some nerve damage which ended his career.
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/07/03 12:31 AM
You really think that losing in the National tourney to the number 1 ranked guy from Washington 2-1 and the number four ranked guy in overtime would preclude you from this little fantasy team huh? Wow guess that precludes almost everyone that ever wrestled in this state. Thats what happened to Chaney at the nationals. He went 2-2 and was a match away from placing. If everyone on this team wrestled exactly the same people at that particular tourney I would agree with you but I think that logic is silly. He was a bad *** you are right, and I would sit in his corner against any 215 that ever wrestled in this state.
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/07/03 12:35 AM
Coach B:
Yep I coached against the Pizza Man and he was a heck of a coach. Flores is too but don't tell him I said that because it will ruin my deal with him. He is awfully good, all you got to do is look what has happened everywhere he has been. His kids have that special toughness that he had when he wrestled. Kenny was a great one and he taught some of the best cradles of anyone I have gone against and was a heck of a guy. I got lucky, I got to coach against a lot of really good people and enjoyed it immensely. Thanks for bringing up those two guys. I think Wayne Jackson never got his due. Gosh he was great and was he tough minded. Another quality guy off the mat as well.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/07/03 04:22 PM
There are so many great wrestlers in Kansas and each opinion probably depends on your generation. Some names I can think of that weren't on here are include:
Bobby Lashley-Junction City (Who is currently ranked in the top ten at 211lbs nationally)
Todd Latin-Independence 4X Champ
E.K Franks- Wellington
Scott Henry- Paola
Temoer Terry- McPherson
Jon White- Columbus
Beau Vest- Topeka
Lonnie Currier- Ulysses
Randy Roark- Columbus
Levi Guillen- Leoti
Allan Hankins- Ark City
Brian Shay-Paola
Steve Mesa- Garden City
Chris Saferite- Augusta
Steve Turley,Landon Frank- Scott City
Myron Ellegood- Garden City
Adam Kieswitter- Dodge City
Jeff Showalter- Nickerson

I could go on and on like most people from kansas could. As you can tell I'm from Southwest Kansas and the guys I grew up watching are from the early to mid 90's.
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/07/03 05:10 PM
Boy there sure are a lot of them on that list that were good. I really remember Hankins and Shay and the other Paola kid, Henry because they tatooed pretty good kids that I had once. There sure have been some good ones over the years. The more people talk about them the more a person remembers.
Posted By: havid deidrick Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/08/03 04:12 AM
talkin bout brian shay, how about amad patillo? never saw him wrestle but i know he was really good.and noah clouse, matt wieshaar, josh lattimer, doug hoover, luke metzler, earl jones, stu bogart.jake straight is goin for his third state title.
Posted By: Les Brown Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/08/03 05:20 AM
I noticed one of SW Kansas' best - Wes Walker of Ulysses - was absent from the list. HS All-American Honors would certainly warrant his inclusion in this discussion.
Posted By: coachtwink Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/08/03 11:17 AM
Any discussion of coaches has got to include Jake Durham-from Norton or Rocky Welton from Goodland/Garden City.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/08/03 11:49 AM
I couldn't agree with you more about Wes Walker on that list. He won the NAIA national championship at heavyweight two years ago, and was an 3xall american. Its easy to brag about him since he's my little brother or at least younger!!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/09/03 04:13 AM
Billy Gabel a 4x state champion!
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/09/03 05:25 AM
Because he is my brother and I don't want him to be forgotten, Rock Westfahl was a two time state champ from Kinsley in 72 and 73 at 189. Pinned his way through the state tourney twice and never went beyond 2:30 in any state tourney match. Wrestled at LSU and lost 5-2 to John Peterson who wrestled at that time for Athletes in Action. I think he is worth remembering here. He was as good as anyone in the country at that time.
Posted By: mike fairleigh Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/10/03 12:00 PM
I think Roger fisher, Doug Duell, stan Faulkender, quenton Horning, and possibly Stan Ward were in that group, jeff boyle and gerrod speer certainly come to mind as unbeatable in their junior/senior years, Speer missing the whole season with the ACL injury from football and then coming back just before regionals and wrestling like he hadn't missed a beat was enough to convince me--- never saw Myron Roderick from winfield wrestle except at his wrestling camp at stillwater (OSU) where he coached so many NCAA champs, he must have been
in his forties at that time and could wrestle with several of the NCAA cahmps that he had at the camp as instructors. I think accomplishment-wise he is still unmatched--
Posted By: Overtime Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/10/03 01:20 PM
Yep Stan Ward really does belong on that list. You could go thru a lot of Norton guys in that era that were really fine wrestlers. The Tacha brothers were great, Ward, Ankeman, Hackney's, Fisher, Horning, and Lowery were all very very good. I think Ward wrestled at Oklahoma, Horning at Nebraska Omaha, Lowery I think at OU. I didn't like Norton much in my youth but had to tip a hat to them. Says a lot about Jake doesn't it.

About that same time Sainty had the Kellers, Walters, Falkender, a couple of Cooks, Ginger, Cajoi, and some more that I have forgotten about. You think the NWKL wasn't a handful for the rest of us. It sure was.
Posted By: Swoop Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/10/03 03:42 PM
I would have to pick Chris Newport from Osawatomie for 130. 4x regional champ,2nd,3rd, and 1st place finishes. 112-9 carreer record.
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/11/03 03:18 AM
Tell you what how bout Travis Phippen of Santa Fe Trail. Couple of state championships and a national championship later on or Scotty Goodale of Ark City who won three state championships and was either first or second in the nation at School of Mines in Colorado as well as being a pretty smart little devil. Couple to think about as well as my old buddies from Oberlin the Brown brothers, Bob and Bill. Bill was the last All-American at K-State taking fourth I think.

Posted By: Overtime Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/11/03 12:44 PM
Actually Justin got beat several times in high school. I don't think he was ever undefeated (maybe once) He lost a one pointer to a three time state champ from Oklahoma in the MidWest City tourney and I think that was his senior year. He was an all time great one no doubt though. He was something special just not undefeated for his high school career. Their schedule was too tough to do that for anyone.

Here's my perfect fantasy team going by todays weights and the weights these guys were close to as seniors:

Just so nobody really forgets the history of the state, how bout the first and only Olympic Champion from the State of Kansas and Kinsley High School, Pete Mehringer in 1932. Below are all the medal winners from that year.

1932 Jack Van Bebber (gold, 158.5), Pete Mehringer (gold, 191.5), Robert Pierce (gold, 123), Edgar Nemir (silver, 134), John Riley (silver, 191.5 +)

One wrestler I haven't seen on any previous list is Kenny Fischer from Manhattan. Kenny was a 3x high school champ and an all-american at Oklahoma. I think Rory Cahoj from St. Francis should be considered (juco national champ) Perry Keller, St. Francis, grand state champ and juco runnerup. Three of the toughest I've seen in Kansas in over 40 yrs of watching wrestling.

I'll throw out a name from the seventies. Frank Gonzalez from Bonner Springs. Had only 1 loss in High School it came his senior year at State to a guy he had beaten the year before. He was suffering from a bad case of the flu at the time. Still managed to get 3rd. He was an undefeated state champ the previous two years. His freshman year he was in Boys Town in Nebraska. He was a High School All American an received a scholarship to UCLA. I'm a little foggy on his college career but I know he qualified for the NCCA tourney there, but transfered to Division II University of Nebraska Omaha where he was a National Champ. He is the Head Coach at Wyandotte High School now. Frank had a teammate at Bonner named Levi Middleton. Levi was a undefeated 3A State and Grand State champ his senior year. He only lost 3 matches in his High School career. Took a pass on a full ride to Oklahoma State.

No Justin Ware never lost to Temor Terry. Terry went up to stay away from Ware after a pretty decisive loss to him at state. I don't think Ware lost any matches to Kansas Wrestlers unless it was very early in his career. He lost to a couple of guys from Oklahoma in close matches in finals of tourneys down there but I can't remember him losing in Kansas. Idon't think Justin Thaw was in his weight but I am not sure about that. I will second that post about Cahjoi and Keller and Ginger from St. Francis was awful good as well as Falkender.

Here are a couple of names to throw in the mix
Eric Koehler of Nemaha Valley as dominate as anyone in the early 80's -defeated Douglas at the unofficial grand state their senior year, also a couple heavies: Jerry Quick of Chapparal--played pro football for the Steelers i believe--a good heavy,,not a Boyle but good and Greavy from Osborne--a real horse and i believe a Juco All-American. Chad Flores-Silver Lake, a two timer with a heart as big as anyone, had a very nice career at UNK. A kid a lot of people did not like, but who was aggressive and dominated: John Blosser of SFT. Also if you guys could help me out here, have been out of touch recently, what happenned to Long of SFT, know he originally went to CMSU, then Colby----someone elaborate--thanks

Are you all on CRACK??? While I didn't read all of the posts thoroughly, I did skim through them and I didn't see Bo Maynes mentioned anywhere. You know, that kid who went undefeated all through high school. Seriously, you guys, he was a stud. Trust me he kicked my *** from 6 and under to senior year, he is/was a stud.

yea, this is Wes Walker and I know Bo. In fact I
ran into him 2 years ago when we dualed Oklahoma.
He was known for an unbeliable fireman's in High School. I don't think anyone's on any crack though. I would also like to let everyone to be sure to follow Bobby Lashley, Junction City KS. Bobby was a KS state Champ and a 3 X National Champion at Missouri Valley College where he coached and kicked my butt on a regular basis. He is now ranked among the world's best has caught the attention of Cael Sanderson.

I don't think anyone really is forgetting about Bo Maines he is a great one no doubt about it. If I had to pick though between him and Duell, I take Duell a hundred times in a row. He is the most dominate wrestler I have seen in this state, just flawless on his feet and a total technician. Bo is a close second in my mind in that weight and to be sure they are both nationally among the all time great high school wrestlers not just in this state but in any state.

By the way I may be wrong but as good as Lashley is I don't think Sanderson is that worried about him yet.

a couple of guys that were omitted: Ed Miller of Hoxie, 3 timer back when the state championship was a three tourney affair, Jack lollar from Scott City, 3xer, It is notable that since Doug Duell of Goodland broke the 4 time barrier and the states were split up and weakened, there is a 4 timer every year, but for the first 42 years or so of Kansas wrestling, no one was able to accomplish it.

dont forget about noah clouse from a few years back

Lashley and Cael are a different weight classes but they have trained together at the olympic training center where Bobby wrestles for the Army team.Just wanted everyone to know theres a Kansas boy out there many people don't know about.

Chris Bolin is also somebody that should be on this team. Although he isn't well known he should be.
Posted By: Westfahl Re: FANTASY KANSAS WRESTLING TEAM - 02/19/03 07:44 PM
Bolen was tough I forgot about him. I don't know why he doesnt get more press than he has. I think he was always right on the edge of winning that hump match in college and if there had been a board like this one he would have been famous. He was a great one no doubt about that.
