Is everybody at what weight the rankings say, or are they just goin by what people weighed last year?
It's the beginning of the season, nobody has wrestled yet. Some people played football, some people ran cross country, some people trained for the season and some people did nothing to prepare.
Of course all the weights are correct!
The PRE-SEASON rankings are purely subjective and MAY be based on erroneous information, therefore rendering the rankings as useless and a basis for discussion and "cussin", and much humor.
The following examples:
Returning 5A 112 lb. State Champion, Tommy Edgmon, is listed as did not place at last years State Tournament. Garrett Harding a former 5A 103 lb. State Champion and third (3rd) place finisher last year at 112 lbs., is not mentioned in the rankings. Edgmon is currently ranked second (2nd) in 6A behind Heincker from Derby.
In 3-2-1A, at 103 lbs., the wrestler ranked fourth (4th) is listed as placing fourth (4th) at last years Tournament when in fact this wrestler went 1-2, and did not place. The wrestler ranked fifth (5th) went 0-2 at last years tournament.
In 4A, 119 lbs., the number one (1) ranked wrestler is the defending 103 lb. State Champion. If, as the rankings suggest, Beebe, Bahe, and Bell are at this weight, my Pre-season money is on one of them!
In 5A, the defending State Champion at 145 lbs., is not ranked in any weight classification.
To be sure, the rankings take much time in preparation, however the value in Pre-season rankings is certainly questionable, as it is all a guessing game.
321A rankings are complete at this time. The only kids currently ranked are those confirmed by coaches, and those that either placed or qualifed at state last year. If there are any mistakes, please let me know.
Thanks
r the 5A rankings up yet? i have not found them.
All of the classes have posted their preseason rankings. You can find them at
wrestling.holton.k12.ks.us/peoplesearch/ .
thank u sir. And WHY IS HUNTER MADL ranked at 140lbs????? he wrestled 112 last yr. I saw him last spring at east kansas practices and he looked like a small 119lber.....
In my experience, at least half of the guys ranked won't place. FOr example, Miller from Manhattan was ranked 2nd all year last year and lost to wetta from NW in the semis, who wasn't ranked. They also have miller as taking 2nd last year. Wetta took second and miller did not place. THis is just an example of how inaccurate some of the rankings can be. It's always better to sneak in through the back door and suprise everyone.
I know the 5A rankings guy and I think he does a terrible job. He should be fired.
What are you ranked again Chris?
Coach Lane who's doing the 6a Guys? Is it Coach Fergola?
To parkwayred:
There was a previous post on this page a few weeks back requesting 6A information, and if my often failing memory serves me correctly, I believe it was from Coach Fergola!
Rankings are not an exact science just ask USC… If a person is ranked in the top six in his weight class it should be taken as recognition for hard work and success in past years of wrestling and not necessarily State placing, but what takes place on the mat consistently day after day. Will you find that these guys can be beat? Sure you can! Anybody can be scored on. Will these guys have a 500 season? I don't think so. The coaches that provide this thankless service mean no harm by including someone that they feel has the potential to perform to the level that they see as attainable. Also if someone is excluded from the list and thinks they should be in the top six then work hard and win matches and good things will happen. To be ranked is not what it seems at face value, the higher the ranking the bigger the target “OU-KSU”, the higher the expectations on the wrestler perform at the perceived level, the tougher it is to do week in and week out. So to be ranked is an honor, to be unranked is could be considered a blessing.
