I know that their are many people who don't think that their should be cheerleaders in wrestling but I definately needed. It doesn't matter what they look like or how un attractive they are... they do alot for the wrestlers and should get more credit than what they get because if you ask me it is not very much!
I agree i def. think that cheerleaders are needed. I think the only thing that gets annoying is that it seems like they all know the same cheers. So when you're at a two day tourney, come Saturday you can recite the cheers 'with' the cheerleaders. Hand-motions and everything.
Posted By: wc Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/16/04 03:24 PM
yeah i understand that.....I am a cheerleader and thats why i brought up this topic...but just to let you know my squad has been making up new cheers because our coach has notice that all the squads do the same cheers!
Well what school do you go to cuz i'll have to pay attention to you guys. Cuz the cheers i've seen are pretty lame. But it sounds like you guys got it all figured out!

I agree that cheerleaders dont get enough credit... but still, They are kinda annoying sometimes.
Posted By: nothinghard Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/16/04 07:44 PM
Well, the thing with cheerleaders is they can be very distracting to a wrestler and may get in the way of his/her warming up and may caust him/her a match cause they weren't warmed up enough. But they do give you something to win for since they are cheering for you. Let's just make sure all they are doing is cheering and not being to distracting.

yeah those cheers are both very common....but i dont think that cheerleaders are a distraction because we have nothing to do with wrestlers winning their matches thats their doing! cheerleaders try their hardest just to cheer them on while they are wrestling and try to get the fans involved..they dont try to distract wrestlers
Posted By: LHS_Wrassler Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/17/04 03:58 PM
Well... also sometimes you cant hear your coach when you are in a match because of the cheerleaders... someone like myself that isnt as experienced needs to hear his coach.
Posted By: wrestlingsister05 Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/17/04 04:16 PM
I was the wrestling cheer captian. having the cheerleaders there was a good way to show the other people at our school that wrestling was there and alot of peopled cared about it. on the other hand it was hard for the wrestlers to hear their coaches over us. then there are those cheerleaders that hit the mats and it was pissing the wrestlers off cuz they might have someone on their back and they would hit the mat and the wrestler would think that the wrestling match was over. every time we hit the mats the coach would get pissed, the wrestlers, our coach and i would all get pretty mad at the other girls. so if you do cheers that have to do with hitting the ground hit the gym floor not the mat and dont sit on the mat because the ref's need room to move around

Cheer leaders distract me when i wrestle i kinda gets on my nerves
Posted By: blitzkrieg Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/17/04 07:22 PM
Instead of Cheerleading in Wrestling. How about, wrestling IN cheerleading? Let these novices go at it on the mat at break for a "half-time" type show.

i also think that it is pretty funny whenever you only see guys talking about the hott cheerleaders thats all they talk about....for example they always talk about Derby, Chapman, and Augusta but i never hear anything about Pittsburg, Parsons, or Chanute...really that stuff doesnt always have to matter does it?
Nobody has ever seen Pitts, Pars, or Chan's cheerleaders.
Posted By: RoyRules Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/17/04 10:30 PM
I don't mind the cheerleaders but some of the wrestlers say that they are distracting....and I know some of the cheerleaders do say that they only go so they can check out the other team (and their own) in tight outfits....so I don't really know if they are actually needed....I mean the parents and friends do most of the cheering anyways.
Posted By: takeyoudown Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/19/04 03:45 PM
I really do not like wrestling cheerleaders. Especially when you have 4 or 5 sets of them in one gym each doing a different cheer at the same time, talk about a headache. They don't really fit the setting of a wrestling meet either. I mean, how often do you hear someone say, "Is there enough glitter in my hair?" at a wrestling meet? And they say it like the amount of glitter in their hair will actually matter in the end. Because I'm pretty sure people don't look at the cheerleaders and say, "OOO She doesn't have enough glitter in her hair, shame on her, what kind of WRESTLING cheerleader is she?" I know when I'm on the mat and I glance over at them, the first thing I notice is the glitter in their hair.

I think that you guys are taking the whole wrestling cheerleading thing to seriously.....so if wrestling cheerleaders arent needed in wrestling..then why are they needed in basketball and football..i'm sure that they can be a distraction to that too! And when you say that they are so loud that you can hear the coach.. you should be smart enough to block out the cheerleaders.. it is not that hard to do!
Posted By: wrestler_112_6A Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/20/04 04:51 PM
cheerleaders are alright. they all do the same cheers and come about 4 in the afternoon it gets annoying. they need to mix it up. If a wrestler is getting distracted by cheerleaders and it "costs him the match" he would probably have lost anyway. the kid needs better focus
Posted By: BlindSeer Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/20/04 04:53 PM
I like cheerleaders in wrestling... I think there's nothing more encouraging then when you pull out a hard earned move and hear the sidelines erupt in cheering.

wc- I think you make 2 excellent points here.

1st- are cheerleaders needed? No. sports competitions will go on with or without cheerleaders. I think sometimes some cheerleaders feel the Football game, or Basketball game or wrestling match is played (or wrestled) to give the cheerleaders an opportunity to cheer. The cheer leaders are there to support the event, they are not the event. However I do feel that when cheerleaders are there in that role (support) they are able to take the atmosphere of the event to the next level.

2nd- I fully agree with you that if a wrestler can't hear his coach, he is not focusing on the right things. I wrestled in some extremely loud situations, and ALL I could hear were my coaches.
Posted By: SCWRESTLINGFAN Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/21/04 02:46 AM
First and foremost I agree completely with wc. I'm also a wrestling cheerleader and i don't think we get enough credit for what we do. sorry ron morgan..don't mean to sound rude or ne thing but maybe u should be paying more attention to ur matches and not the cheerleaders, again i agree with wc u should tune us all out not pay any attention to us just the match at hand and to ur coach. takeyoudown, if everyone follows KSHSAA rules there should be no glitter worn while cheering at anytime..whether it be for football, basketball or wrestling, because the glitter can come off and get on the floor or whatever and make it slick and it puts the player or participants and more risk of getting hurt. i will admit sometimes i go to the meets to check out the guys in their singlets, but HELLO! i'm a teenage girl what the heck do u expect? but for the most part i have a "job" to do when i go to the meets, cheering for the wrestlers the best i can and getting the crowd involoved in the matches, whether there are 200 people from my town there or if there are 20 ppl there, and believe me i've had close to both. idk bout u guys in eastern ks but out here in western ks a lot of times we try to figure out cheers from the other teams if we think it's cute so i think that's how everyone comes up with the same cheers, and it does get annoying, but whoever said life wouldn't be annoying right?
Posted By: wc Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/21/04 03:18 PM
Thank you for understanding....people like to complain to much....and i definately agree with you scwrestlingfan that life is annoying in all kinds of ways...i dont think that the wrestlers should think that they can blame the cheerleaders for losing their matches because we are a distraction...they actually lost their match because they arent good...so wrestlers dont take you loss on someone else just face it....your not good
Posted By: QuittersRawesome Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/21/04 04:16 PM
WC is exactly right, i'm an experienced wrestler that knows enough to block-out cheerleaders' voices, and if you cant hear your coach, TELL HIM TO YELL LOUDER you pansies, i think you all should worry a little less about the cheerleaders and focus on your matches, while us Quitters sit in the stands and worry about the cheerleaders, and not our matches, HA!! go WC!
Posted By: Nate Naasz Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/21/04 06:02 PM
Everyone complains about wrestling cheerleaders, but the moment the school gets rid of wrestling cheerleaders the parents would throw a fit. We should all just be glad that there are girls out there who still want to cheer for our wrestlers and not those guys out there playing buckets. Just think, they don't cheer for the "sexy" sport (in most schools) and also give up most of their Saturdays for about 3 months. Keep cheering girls, just stay out of our way, and away from our boys during the tournament.
Posted By: wrestlingsister05 Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/22/04 01:19 PM
at football and basketball it aint that bad compared to wrestling. they dont have to think as much when they are working as a team. in wrestling its only one person reling on himself and the coach. cheerleaders make it so the wrestler cant hear his coach and it makes them frustrated. most parents think that having wrestling cheerleaders is dumb because most girls are there to hang all over the guys and parents dont want them there cuz they make them mad since they hit the mats and are in the way some of the time
Posted By: Mom160 Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 12/22/04 02:35 PM
I respect those teams that have cheerleaders, just as I'm glad our team doesn't have them. But it's not while they are cheering that bothers me. At one tournament this year the entire squad was quarralling, and since they were sitting next to us we "enjoyed" the entire argument. When feelings were hurt some of the girls came and sat on our boys' stuff. They didn't pay attention to when matches were, so they were up and down the bleachers, pausing in front of us to discuss hair, makeup, and other important things, causing us to ask them numerous times to please move so we could see the mats. Some teams have cheerleaders that are respectful of other towns and their teams, but there are several who seem to feel that showing support for their team means being disrespectful to other towns.

On another note, I have seen some of the most respectful wrestlers this year, and I applaud you! It is nice to see common courtesy!

My goodness is it ever nice to be back in Iowa where pretty much EVERY school has wrestling cheerleaders, where we make fun of those few that don't, where the cheerleaders both and love and respect the sport and, most importantly, wrestling IS the sexy sport! It's pretty sad that this even has to be a point to discuss!

Ahem Coach DeWitt!

You guys should be grateful these young ladies want to be there. And instead of making a bunch of junior high comments, or worrying about them bothering you, you ought to thank them. Our cheerleaders are considered to be a vital part of our program, and as a coach I'm grateful for their contribution, and I know our kids are.

I am a cheerleader so yes I have an obligation to stick up for my sport(yes it is a sport), but I'm not going to rant and rave about getting the short end of the stick. Though I will say that most of the time we do. I understand that wrestling is a tough sport maybe one of the toughest. But if you are truely comitted to wrestling then all you should be concentrating on is your opponent and the coach not what is going on elsewhere. Cheerleaders cheer deal with it, it's what we do! Maybe instead of complaining about how annoying we are or how hott we are (cause I know that it happens) you should pay attention to the match whether your in it or not. Plus cheerleaders are not the only ones yelling, I don't know if anyone has ever noticed but there is a crowd. That and come on even wrestlers yell for wrestlers so you can't pin the noise or annoyance on one thing or group of people a.k.a cheerleaders. About the glitter thing like SCWRESTLINGFAN said it is against KSHSAA rules and most cheerleaders follow them or at least my squad does. So sorry if I affended anyone but I just had to get my point across.

Cheerleading is a sport? Hmm.. Ok, I agree somewhat with CHEERLEADING being a sport. Wrestlerettes are not "normal" cheerleaders. You sit there and hit the floor. You get no physical exercise at all (excluding the OH SO TOUGH hand gesters and movements). I can see how cheerleaders at football games can argue that its a sport. They are actually getting physical exersice and working up a sweat. I'm not saying that you dont sweat while sitting on the floor and yell.

I'm not going to continue because I could type a two page essay on my philosophy of cheerleaders in wrestling.

ok, i for one think that cheerleaders are awsome. they give you back rubs, unusual converation, and most importantley......something to look at besides sweaty guys in tights......BUT there is one thing and one thing only that i hate about them, that i despise about them. i will have gone without food or water for what seems like weeks. (really a few days but u get the point) i can make building blocks with my spit because im so dehidrated that its thicker than foam. Then i get the sent of Mcdonalds, Burger King, Daylight Dounuts, and of course CRISPY CREAMS!!! that seem to somehow drift from the front of the bus to the back of it where i am huddled next to a heater pouting about being hungry. That and this is all i have to say.....girls, i love you and what guy wouldnt....its just that on the way up to the tournoment....please dont bring food on the buss and if you must (i know your gilrs and u must eat) make it something like wheat thins, crackers, ect something sentless so we dont suffer all the more. subway wouldnt be all that bad either cuz ya know its only 6 grams of fat. it keeps u easy on the eyes. Thanx for your suport, your coroporation, and your love of the sport!!!!!!!!!!
Posted By: Jays2 Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/04/05 06:12 PM
Like Vikings manager I could go on forever about cheerleading and being a sport and what not, but i can say this: Our cheerleaders do not pound on the mat, bother our wrestlers, or sit there and "ACT" like we know whats going on. We make sure we are always aware of what is going on and only do cheers at the appropriate times. I hate it when people don't like cheerleaders because of those other certain squads who make the rest of us look bad. As far as it being a sport, if we dont know cheers or are late for practices- we run,or do pushups- hows that for "not being a sport" ?. We support our team and for state we make baskets of food candy and gatorade. All in all, I dont think we are too bad..?!
Posted By: Jay Fan Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/04/05 07:50 PM
Jays2 you forgot to add that we get up at 5 in the morning to practice 3 days a week and a 3 hour practice once or twice a week ... yea it might not be as much as what a wrestler does but hey its more than any other squad around us ... or at least it shows!(for most)(not all) no affence lol

wow, you norton cheerleaders sure are opinionated
Posted By: abcd... Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/04/05 09:14 PM
Honestly, I think wrestling cheerleading is a great and wonderful thing. It pumps up the crowd, and as it has already been said, we aren't the only ones who are cheering. I have talked to some of the wrestlers and they say that they can't hear us because they focus on the coaches voice; therefore if our guys can't hear us, which we are a very loud group, then other guys shouldn't either. I agree that some cheerleaders may be annoying because I completely and totally see that too. Some of the cheer groups only care about seeing the guys. Our coach makes sure that we do not distract any of the wrestlers and if he sees us talking to a group of wrestlers, he will come up and embarass us. So all in all, I think wrestling cheerleading should stay.

Posted By: wrestlincheer_7 Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/04/05 09:58 PM
I dont know about your squads, but at my high school we are not just cheerleaders, we are also managers. That means we fill waterbotles, take stats, video tape, whatever coach says, and help the guys with blood when necessary. We go to practice not only for our cheers and dance, but also to do the tasks coach has set up for us. We carry the equipment too and from the bus. We are useful! We go to help and for the love of the sport! I think it is so interesting but I don't have what it takes to actually wrestle, so this is what I can do to still be involved with the sport!
Posted By: Brettimus Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/05/05 01:18 AM
any cheerleader cheering for me is awesome. There are a few standards though, which we'll leave blank.
Posted By: Bronco Wrestler Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/05/05 03:44 AM
--Cheerleading in Football & Basketball is far more different than that of Wrestling, as they are far away from the players in football and basketball they are usually on the end of the court out of the way, unlike in wrestling where they are matside screaming and pounding and yes it does get annoying, it's okay once in a while but enough is enough, or when they do a good job chant you get beat, that's the most aggrivating.

--Norton has a good cheersquad and it shows in their performances, but their dance team is about as good, but still a great spectacle to watch.

--Finally cheerleading is NOT a sport, never will be, and shouldn't even be considered. According to Title IX, the worst thing to happen to Wrestling ever, the KSHSAA doesn't recognize it as a sport, but rather an activity such as Scholar's Bowl (which i'm a part of), chess club, and debate. I don't care you can argue you do as much physical work as everyone else, and you get hurt too, blah blah blah, cheerleaders do have the highest injury rate among sports, but that's only because of the unathleticness of them, when they toss each other and drop each other, and the count a sprained ankle as an injury, how many football players/wrestlers do you see that sprain ankles, break fingers, sprain them and just keep playing so they can't use that. They do not have a defined "season of activity". I contacted the KSHSAA last year, and the NCAA front office about this last year as I did a debate about it in my AP English class, in which i won the debate in a class of 2 guys and 9 girls, i convinced them that cheerleading wasn't a sport, the KSHSAA and NCAA do not recognize it as a sport thus i do not as well, and many others share my view, those of you that don't should because i speak the truth about it not being a sport....Cheerleading is an ACTIVITY, not a SPORT like wrestling!

Posted By: ThreePointBuck Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/06/05 07:23 AM
I personally think that cheerleaders can be entertaining during a long tournament. When you don't have a teammate to watch, you really are kind of bored. But some cheerleaders, not all, can do some pretty ditsy things. I remeber at one tournament a cheerleader fell on the mat as she was walking across it. It was a pretty funny ordeal with her reaction and everything. So i like the idea of having cheerleaders at tournaments. And they are not that hard to block out.

I'm glad you support it, support from the stands, I'm a Senior, not immature, apparently worth your time since you responded, my points... take your "activity" and go where teams need help, wrestlers rely on themselves not other people to get them going and to win, but i guess it does take a squad of cheerleaders to win a match? get real, Wrestlers in themselves are the reason they win, you are merely there for the spectators, b/c no one cares what you cheer, every other squad does the same stuff, get real, and try to find a sport to do instead of an activity
Posted By: DHSCheerWrestling Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/07/05 04:25 AM
Ok... Do you really have to put down people for what they love to do? We aren't sitting here putting down people because they wrestle. Some of us like to cheer and are actually good at it. Some of us go to a different level and actually do this competitively and we can get offered scholarships to schools as well as you guys can. So don't sit here and put us down for something that we love to do. The Derby wrestlers always support us wrestling cheerleaders and so do the coaches and always make us feel welcomed, maybe you should just accept the fact that we are there and try to make the best of it. Thank you

Posted By: PiPhigirl Re: Cheerleading in wrestling? - 01/08/05 10:53 AM
wrestlingchic4u, you seem pretty jealous of these cheerleaders.... obviously you've never attended any sort of college wrestling match. In fact if I recall correctly the last Oklahoma State match I went to there were wrestling cheerleaders cheering on the wrestlers. Oklahoma State seems to have it figured out being the No. 1 wrestling team in the nation and they have cheerleaders at their home wrestling matches....go figure! That goes for OU too, I've seen the OU cheerleaders at their home meets in Norman also. And I'd say their program is up to par too. The only reason cheering for wrestling in college is so rare is because today wrestling in college is so rare. The programs get little recognition and not enough funding, so of course schools don't have the funds or interest to have cheerleaders for college wrestling. So before you run your mouth off about college cheerleading and wrestling you need to actually know something about cheerleading for wrestling which you obviously do not.

Even if your wude to them and call them names they still do their duity for you. They take a lot of critisizm from wrestlers and everyone else and they still keep going. i belive that they are better people than you for the fact that they arent puting others down AND THEY STILL CHEER FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO DO PUT THEM DOWN. im getting tired of hearing all the negative about cheerleaders, lets concentraite on the good that they do such as suport the team, cheer you on, give excelent back rubs, give us goodies at special tournoments after weigh-in, and of course be respectfull to you.

i dont understand how people could be so passionatly against cheerleaders. they don't spread the plague or do any evil deeds, they simply support their school.

I have one thing to say. Thank you to those who support cheerleaders. Good Luck to all you wrestlers!

Little Buster is right we do put up with a lot of crap from the wrestlers...some teams more than others...but still it's basically all the same. I really don't have much more to say, I'd be wasting my energy to say what I want because what I want to say is a repeat of what a lot of people have said on here already so basically just reread the post. O and by the way Norton cheerleaders I was very impressed with your squad yesterday and the meet. And Derby cheerleaders I have always been impressed with your squad at the Garden City Invitaional. See you guys soon.

Scott City cheerleader- which one were you? please don't tell me your the one that in the middle front of your squd during the finals...b/c well yea i won't say anything, but there was a couple others that weren't too bad

Jim- Yes i do like to argue with people, i say stuff to just get a rise out of people, and this argument about it being a sport/for spectators etc. is something i argue about everyday w/ cheerleaders and dancers....but it's all good i'm glad they do supports us, but they do get annoying.
