Looking through the weight loss thread made me think about some of the great stories wrestlers use when they don't make weight.
The two classics that come to mind are: 1) The kid that hit a five pound growth spurt over the weekend and 2) The "All I had was one ice cube but I gained three pounds."
Please share the other great lines you've heard.
Oh yeah, the "I didn't think water weighed anything because it doesn't have any calories" is sweeeeeeet!
What about: All I had was a 32 ounce cup of Slim Fast.
Years ago we had a kid who left the night before a meet a pound over and coach told him to eat and drink real "light" and he could run whatever he didn't sleep off in the morning. He came in 4 1/2 pounds over the next morning. When asked what he ate and drank. He told coach he only had a one bag of marshmellows and some skim milk. He said he ate the "lightest" things he could find.
I drank several light beers one night and I didn't lose anything either.
SlamBam
"All I had was an orange"....Don't know where you find a 5 lb. orange, but he did.
During Coach Jilka high school career, we had a guy that was supposed to wrestle coach Jilka at a dual the next day. He left exactly on weight, and was told to eat light and and he would have no worries. When he came in the next morning he was 2.5 over and was beside himself (as Goddard was supposed to be a pretty heated rival, but as a freshman I wasn't to aware of this)that he might cost the team the meet because we would have to forfeit the weight. His just couldn't understand why eating a medium pan pizza from Pizza Hut and a SMALL coke had put him over the edge. By the way folks, wouldn't have mattered if he would have made weight, Jilka would have smoked him.
"By the way Jilka, wouldn't have mattered if he would have made weight, you would have smoked him."
I don't know about that mawcoach, were Jilka's knees as weak back then as they are now?
Once I was two pounds under leaving practice, but that night I ate a delicious 8th grader. Man, you should have seen the look on coach's face. He was pissed.
Your knees would be weak too, if they had to carry around that gigantic booty all day.
Dingbat-If you would have only ate a 7th grader you'd have made weight.
How about the kids who gain wieght during practice. LOL. those are always precious
In Jr. High, this kid left like one pound under and the coach told him to eat lightly. He came in the next day and was 5 pounds over! When asked what he had, he said he only had "some of my mom's soup."
We joked for years about that soup.
Gentlemen ...... are you implying that some of these young athletes were being less than candid or exercised poor judgement regarding their pre-match consumption?
Sportsfan02,I wouldn't think his knees were that weak. I don't think he was quite as big as he is now. Our guy only won one match his entire high school career. But, the match he won qualified him for state his senior year in 5a. I'd like to think that his win is testimonial to dedication and perseverance. It might have just been the gods smiling on him that day though.
I had a wrestler about eight years ago come back after Christmas break 26lbs over.....so I asked the question...."What did you eat?". His story started out like this...."2 bags of Double Stuffed Oreos......." and it gradually became more and more. So then I was like ok I will ask his mom....she said "Nothing". To be honest it was the craziest thing I had ever heard. I will never ask that question again...ever. Man, his face was swollen up it was gross. Needless to say he bumped up. Later
yeah.....we had a 125 my junior year, who came back from christmas break who was 27 over, he said he had been working out.....and eating.....I would like to know what workout can put 25 pounds on in a week and a half....sign me up
We had two twins that went to our school and after every weekend they'd come in at least fifteen pounds over. They were wrestling 119 and 125 their senior years, so it was pretty brutal on them.
I remember those times.... My fatty friend, Luke Raynor, came in like 22lbs over at heavyweight after Christmas break, I was 17lbs over and Sultani was at least 15 over too. We were all fat, but Lukey was just nasty hippo fat by then though.
Back in my Atwood High School wrestling days we had a kid who was right on the night before and 1 pound over the next morning. His reply to Coach Woody as to "what did you eat last night?" was "nothing, all I had was a vanilla shake, it wasn't even chocolate!" I'm not kidding on this one.
i once gained 5 pounds during practice because i drank so much water, good thing i didn't have a match the next day
In college we were once going to a preseason trny. We had this kid with us, that used to wrestle for Osowatime. Well after we worked out he was right on wieght. We went home and saw him just suck on an cup of ice that wasn't very full. Time we got to the Mo. Valley trny. he was 2 lbs over after taking a leak. After that we always teasted him that he gets fat in his sleep and would always be fat. He looked like he wanted to cry.....**** that was a funny time Derek Wendt!
I once was three pounds over after practice and my coach told me to only drink a couple ounces of water that night. the next morning I was 5 pounds over.
We once had a kid come in 3 over and when asked what he had eaten, he said " just a couple snickers and a diet coke" Like the diet coke was supposed to counter the calories in the snickers.
Or like calories even matter the night before a weigh-in. All that really matters is how heavy the food is.
"I had just a few chicken wings." The best one I have heard yet. Make weight guys!
"In this stage of the game it's not about WHAT you eat but HOW MUCH you eat" Coach Frohling.... but some people just don't understand that on our team...even our 103lbser doesn't get it...he's 112 right now and a tournament on saturday...but the real started like this...
We had a dual the next day and we were weighing out at practice and Coach Frohling was standing there seeing where we were so if anyone was over he'd know what to expect, well our heavy weight (I'm from Russell, by the way) he was a senior last year, he was usually about 275 and always made weight with little sacrafice, but we all were done and we were talking to the Coach and he said that he was like 4.5lbs. under so we figured okay whatever, so we weighed in the next morning and he was 4 over? how in god's graces you gain that much I don't know but he had a good excuse, he only drank a little water and ate a small piece of roast beef, well the more we talked to him the more the truth came out, he actually drank almost a gallon jug of water and a huge plate of roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, needless to say the fat boy ran it off that morning, but seriously? 8lbs in one night, how's that humanly possible?
It is very easy to gain and lose water weight quickly if you are in top shape. In college I lost 13 pounds in 8 hours and put it back on in 1 hour. Not a recommended practice. We found out we could weigh-in a day early because the team we dueled wanted one weigh-in. They had a meet the night before us. Both coaches agreed and the rest is history. It took three different workouts to get the weight off. It only took one sitting or standing to put it back on.
our 189 pounder(michael malay) weighed out of practice at 190 and come back the next day weighin 201. how do you gain 12 pounds in a 24 span is unbelieveable
I agree completely, but if it's due-able Michael's your man
Our 103 pounder weighed 114 on wednesday and has a Tournament on Saturday...Cause we didnt have practice Monday or Tuesday...
all i ate to gain that much weight was a cup of water and a half of a slice of pizza.
probably the best one ive heard was in jr. high. a kid was 2 under the night before a match. came in the next morning 3 over. coach asks him wat he ate. i swear i had a little bit of spagetti. like just a few spoonfuls.
Our 103, my brother is on the same boat as Keiswetter i believe, not sure which seafood buffet they found but it's gotta suck to try to get down there
My Little cousin did not make weight today. I felt bad for him. It is hard to run of 1.5 pounds when you are suppposed to be 75lber in the 7th grade.
