yeah, look at boaz beard and tyler caldwell. both undefeated.

Look at Cole Zoglman from Garden Plain and also Trent Cox from Andale
Posted By: Ryan Jilka Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/06/06 05:06 PM
I would like to add Mitchell Means and Ryan Houlden are also doing well for Goddard.

Of course, Nathan Furches is a stud. I think this freshman crop is one of the better we've seen in a while.
Posted By: JFinkeldei Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/06/06 06:09 PM
Although he has been injured for awhile, Kyle Detmer from Bishop Carroll is having a good year as well. I agree with Jilka it seems overall the freshman class is strong across the state.

beau hentzen maize is also doin a great job
Posted By: Prant Garker Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/07/06 04:00 AM
I think the KSHSAA should put a Hentzen restriction on the town of Maize. It's only fair--they've had like, 35.

Very well and I'm glad someone mentioned his name. In the "elite names" being tossed around in the freshman class, his name has been seemingly forgotten. This kid is a stud and it never hurts to have a dad that is a coach because most kids that have been in that situation have been extremely tough come state time and do very well, just look at Ross Taplin, Brady LaMar, and Eric Johnson to name a few that have had dad as a coach.

What are you talking about? If you are going to post something like this, you need to explain yourself.
Posted By: 24/7 Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/08/06 03:58 PM
Beard and Caldwell went to NM last year and lived and wrestled with the Adamson's. Did they repeat 8th grade in NM? I am not positive, but word is they did. If that is true, that is what is being referred to.

That is a very good varsity record for a freshman at that weight. I had mentioned Ryan as a freshman to watch in an earlier topic discussing this year's incoming freshmen. Congratulations to Ryan on the season he is having and good luck to him at regionals.

With all due respect to Branden Rusk, Ryan Garrett was coming back from an injury and the dual was over point-wise, so I decided it was not worth the risk. Thanks for asking.

Matt Brock 125lbs, Tonganoxie. being only his 2nd year ever wrestling he is wrestling very well... if memory is correct he is 15-16... we as a team have traveled to Kearney, Nebraska. and goodland kansas in the tournaments there. He has done well for a freshman.
Posted By: pintowin Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/16/06 02:37 AM
I'm looking forward to watching freshman Zach Bainter from Norton wrestle at regionals and surely state. I'm glad that he has recovered from his injury and glad to hear its nothing to major. Keep up the great work Zach and wrestle hard.

Brian Noller from Russell is doing pretty good this year he is almost garenteed to go to state this year, he has placed at almost every tourney if not all of them

hey, 9-13, thats a pretty darn good record, if u ask me, i bet that guy wins state
Posted By: Stoke Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/17/06 01:42 AM
REAL Funny that is a good record for freshman varsity. I went to state last year with a less than 25% winning record
Posted By: clarkmom Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/17/06 02:23 AM
The Jesseph Twins from Chanute Zach at 112 and Cameron at 119 cameron has a 27-10 record real good for a freshman. This is Zach's 2nd year, and Cameron's 3rd year both naturals.
Posted By: Husker Fan Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/19/06 01:10 PM
I am not sure what the record is of Jordan Brown of Pittsburg but he always impressed me in Kids. Jordan took 2nd the 5A regional at Miege yesterday and he had a close final match with Andy Hurla. Jordan is wrestling very well.
Posted By: Husker Fan Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/19/06 01:28 PM
I have never seen Jayden Bird wrestle but I think he deserves mention in this topic. He is a 189 wrestler from Andover-Central. It looks like he was 22-10 going into yesterday's Labette County Regional and he went 3-1, taking third. That is a pretty good year for a freshman at 189.
Posted By: BIGDAWG Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/19/06 09:13 PM
Jac Cole 189 for Bishop Carroll and Jeff Poe 171 from Northwest both are doing well. Higher weights are tougher for the freshman. Both are the only ones in there weights at State. Good Luck to both of them. Two great kids.

Gus Allen a Freshman from West Elk will be wrestling 189 in Hays

Kyle Morey of Sabetha qualified for State this year as a Frosh and is improving every day. His record may not reflect how good he can be at times. But he did draw Madden from Norton first round! Poor kid, but the positive is putting a Frosh in there is a big boost for next season!

Kevin Hamm from tonganoxie, another exceptionaly good freshman... I cant remember record, but either was just few off from being .500 or he is finally winning record, but he qualified for state his freshman year. good luck to him at salina this year.

This freshman class is very, very tough. My opinion is that there are going to be several freshman win their respective state tournaments, be it 123, 4, 5, or 6A, and several place as well. It would suprise me most if they did not place. They are a reflection of the terrific kids clubs in the state.

Yes, we decided when he was in Kindergarten to red shirt him so he would have a better chance at a state championship in High School. Of course, he had never wrestled yet, and despite the fact that he had had so many serious health issues since birth that he was abnormally small, and in fact was a miracle that he was alive, the teachers’ advice to hold him back was like music to our ears because it fell into our great plan for sports achievements for our son.

I could have used the face, but this debate is old and it is important to smile sometimes. ltrain, not against you, you seem like a decent coach and person from your past posts. A huge part of my comments above are true, some are not, those that know Nathan, and our family can figure out the true from the bull.
I KNEW IT!!!!

Mike - Your response was right on target. Thanks for a good laugh! We all need to be reminded that there isn't always a conspiracy or plan that we control. Sometime life just happens!
Posted By: Mike Furches Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/21/06 09:08 PM
Thanks Lancer. I have an issue with holding a child accountable for the actions that many may take, like parents who know their children, even actions that are within the rules.

There are numerous great kids that are 16 years old and wrestling as freshman. I am perfectly fine with that, and believe that as long as the child is within the rules of the system, this is a mute argument or debate. People talking about 16-year-old freshman may not realize it, but every underhanded negative comments often speak out against some great kids, some like Nate, that had no say in their being in the age and grade they are in. If having an issue with this, take it up with the parent of the child, face to face. If unwillling to do that, then be quite on the issue. Next thing you know, some people will be talking about the months that a kid is born in, then again, they already have that debate going. Sportsfan02 had a great comment here, what do we do with leap year babies? Nathan has always wrestled up a weight or age when possible. We were just notified for example today that he was named the Division 5 Oklahoma Series Wrestler of the year at 110 pounds. Did you see that 110 pounds. Nathan right now is having no trouble making 103 and if he don’t grow much will wrestle that again next year. He is a small 103, but he wrestled up in this division to face tougher comp in Oklahoma. If you have the chance to watch him this weekend, notice again, that he will be one of the small 103-pound wrestlers. Nathan is not afraid of getting beat; he goes where he can to wrestle the best, despite age. I will assure you that the 16-year-old freshman that are doing well, are doing well not because they are 16-years-old, but because they work their butts off and wrestle the best competition they can. I could mention many names here but won’t, but rest assured, most of the great wrestlers that are 16-year-old Freshman have been great wrestlers long before now

To Mike Furches: Thanks for the happy face and answering the question as a proud father should, with pride and dignity. I look forward to meeting you this weekend, trust I will find you in the Derby section.

Also, any thoughts to Mary Jane singing the Nat'l Anthem, she has a beautiful voice and would be a nice introduction to the first match of the day...

Before I forget...back to the topic!
Posted By: Mike Furches Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/21/06 11:26 PM
Bracket Man, I'll be working the pass gate both mornings and then will be in the Derby Section or working the floor. As to her singing the Anthem, I'm sure they already have that worked out with someone else. She kind of got onto a little wrestler for Derby at 103 that volunteered her for regionals.

Regarding freshman, there are many great Freshman out there, and many more in the lower weights that have had a tough year because of being light. Kids like Jeff Vesta, Sharky Slyter and others that just haven't grown yet. We look at wins and losses but these are great kids on and off the mat. There are many others, many that have been mentioned. I think we also forget about great Freshman who had to wrestle JV because they wrestled behind someone. At Derby there was Alex Fieldcamp and others. I know that these kids often get left out of the discussion and it is a shame. There are the obvious choices for me, Tyler Caldwell may be the best 112 pound wrestler in the country, bar none, at any age or class, there are others out there. Who are the best? Who deserves the credit? Let's see how they finish their career, not just their season, then I can tell you more.
Posted By: Bracket-man Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/21/06 11:41 PM
Mike Furches: That kid of yours is okay in my book, knows wrestling AND a talented voice. See you soon...

That is a great comment about 103lbers, as well. I can remember Nathan McCormick (BVN) as a freshman, would have needed steel-toed boots and a shot put in his singlet to weigh 103. It is very difficult to project what 4 years of high school athletics can do to these smaller (weights) wrestlers. Some will be wrestling at 135+ when they are Seniors. Someone can correct me here, but Stewart Bogart wrestled 103 as a Freshman and wrestled 140? as a Senior. So you never know...
Posted By: rhkswrestling Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/22/06 11:39 PM
Brian Noller from Russell is doing pretty well for a freshman. He may not be undefeated like all the other ones out there, but for him only wrestling since 7th grade and now a state qualifier this year, I would have to say that is pretty good.
Posted By: JD Darnell Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/23/06 02:32 AM
Dan Weigel from Plainville has had a solid year. Dan's record is 29-3 at 103lbs. He looks to be a very tough competetor at state.
Posted By: Husker Fan Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/25/06 01:25 PM
I don't believe anyone ever mentioned Colby Crank of Hutchinson in this thread. Colby Crank is a 135 pound freshman who I know has won a couple of Kids State titles and he was 29-14 going into the 6A tournament. Yesterday he had a great day at State and he will be in the finals tonight. Great job, Colby Crank! That is quite an accomplishment for a freshman.

Mitchell Means came in 4th and that is an excellent performance for a freshman at 140 at 6A State. Congratulations to all four of you freshmen winners and placers from Goddard.

Two wins, a 4th and a 6th place from their freshmen class is an incredible showing for Goddard. Looks like they are going to be the team to beat in 6A for the next three years.

How about freshman Zac Bainter of Norton losing by 1 (15-16) to Nash Burton in the finals at 3-2-1A.?!?! Bainter takes down in the second and gives up nine (9!) points on cheap tilts and is behind, if I remember correctly, 12-3 to start the third period. (Won't even get into whether the second of the three tilts met near fall criteria). Five more seconds in the third and Bainter wins.
Posted By: NurseKs Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/26/06 04:26 PM
Has anybody heard of Zach Bainter of Norton...He placed 2nd at 3-2-1A State...and he wrestled a senior in the finals..and only lost by one..and the way he came back from i think a 7-2 deficit was just amazing..what does everyone else think of this kid??

I knew this match was gunna be a tough one for him...he came out in the 1st period a lil tenative but then he settled down and go in the groove...i think Bainter was the better wrestler but good job to Burton in winning and great job to Bainter for having a really good season and ending his last match of the season strong

tyler calwell went to nm 4 a year and repeated the 8 th grade so i wouldt say he is a good freshman more like a badass 10th grader. but im not saying he wouldt have been a good freshman last year.....
Posted By: cward Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 02/26/06 11:41 PM
There were quite a few good freshman, one i would have to say would be Ryan Wuthnow of Abilene, this year he qualified for state at 130, he started off the season at 125 and switched with Dawson. One great match from regionals is when he wrestled Ray Olson (who went on to get 4th at state). Ryan took olson into overtime for sure once possibly a couple times. He will be something to look for in the next year or 2!

I've been very impressed with Mitchell Means of Goddard, there are great things in the future for him.
Posted By: ltrain Re: Any Freshman doin well this year? - 03/05/06 01:38 PM
Mike , sorry it took so long to get back. I wasn't attempting to sound critical of Nathan. Quite the contrary, I was asking about (hence the ?) his age, not making a statement of conviction. Just wondering out loud, in the future I would encourage you or anyone to defend all personal attacks made on this forum, see the way that people have portrayed Beard and Caldwell who both happen to be in the same situation.
ya thats too bad Nathan wasnt growing more, i would have loved to see him and Hansen from Turner wrestle but like you said he isnt growing much and is a small 103 pounder, and is already going up in weight as it is.
