Where are these guys coming up with 35 plus wins in a season? Either they’re heading out the back door the hard way for third or somebody wrestling allot of duel tourneys. How are these Coaches maximizing their competition points? It’s beyond me! They sure aren’t wrestling each other.
Lots of tourneys, few duals
for example:
Tim Durkin 189
SFT Dual - 1-0 - 1 point
ACCHS Tournament - 5-0 - 3 points
Eudora Tournament - 6-1 - 4 points
Emporia Tournament - 4-1 - 3 points
G-E Dual - 0-1 - 1 point
Bonner Springs Tournament - 3-1 - 3 points
Basehor-Linwood Tournament - 2-3 - 4 points
Paola Tournament - 2-2 - 3 points
Concordia Tournament - 5-1 - 4 points
Baldwin Dual - 1-0 - 1 point
Frontier League - 3-1 - 3 points
Regionals - 3-0 - 0 points
Record: 35-11 Competition Points: 30
I've looked at brackets in other states and kids have 55-70 matches in TX and MO. I used to feel more strongly that KSHSAA was hurting KS wrestling by limiting the number of matches. But, in looking at the number of matches college guys wrestle it looks like 45 is a good number. A coach who wrestles his team in a lot of tournaments rather than duals can get 45 matches for his kids. If you went undefeated you would be about 45-0, no back door matches. 45 is good in 3.5 months. Over a year, not a season, a serious wrestler needs 100 matches...I recall a conversation I had with Cael Sanderson's dad. He said Cael had had 1000 matches before he got to college. He thought that had something to do with Cael's success. So, Cael's avg was about 100 matches per year. If you wrestle Greco and Freestlye and you can get 8-10 matches in one tournament!
