This year could measure up to be the best one ever for Kansas wrestlers in Division One wrestling. We have quite a few guys ranked in the pre-season polls. 8 or 9 all-Americans usally wins titles at the D-1 nationals. I know my opinion is biased and optomistic, but here are my D-1 all-American predictions for 2004-2005.
125:
Austin Devoe, MU
Tanner Gardner, Stanford
133:
Shawn Bunch, Edinboro
Dusty Spaulding, Nebraska
141:
Chris McCormick, MU
Matt Murray, Nebraska (may redshirt)
157:
Joe Johnston, Iowa
165:
Jacob Klein, Nebraska
184:
Justin Dyer, Oklahoma
HWT:
Scott Coleman, Iowa State
Several of these guys could end up going for it all on Saturday night, but here are my big predictions:
Dyer beats Defending champ, Rosholt, twice during the season. Chris McCormick & Joe Johnston win it all, and Devoe and Gardner face off for the title!
Dear Eric:
Mighty wishful thinking for your East Kansas alums. Very likely Rosholt and Dyer will not wrestle this season as Rosholt is projected to be at 197 lbs. this season. In any event, doubtful Dyer would win even one of a possible four matchups (two Bedlam duals, the NWCA National Duals, and possible league championship).
I will agree Johnston and Gardner should attain All-American status, however Devoe is unproven and McCormick's ability at this level is an absolute unknown.
I do give you credit for positive thinking.
If Hoover maintains his focus, I look for him to defeat both Gardner and Devoe. Klein will repeat All-American.
Yep, I always go for the underdogs. I usually don't know who I'm rooting for in football games until it comes down to the 2 minute warning or less.
Dyer had quality wins last year. .pinned Pascoe who was ranked top 3 all year.
Devoe won a University national champiship last spring, and that's no psuedo title . . .that's a tough gig. McCormick was 4th at that.
But you're right. .I'm wishing more than betting. . but none of it would stun me if I was right. It's a wacky wrestling world ya know.
take care.
I watched McCormick drill for 2.5 hours with Joe and Tom Brands while we were in Indianapolis for the OTT. They rotated in and out for the entire time and Mac impressed me with how much he has improved since HS. Brands came over to me half way through and wanted to know who he was and where he wrestled. Maybe not AA, but he will make some noise this year.
Dyer all-americaning to me isnt that far-fetched. He did wrestle a very very close match w/ Josh Lamberect in a wrestle off (something like 3-2) and Lamberect is a 3x All-American and national runner up as well.
Devoe placing top 8 is believeable. He wrestled so many tough and close matches during last season against quality opponents. It sounds like all the summer sweat(Univ. Champ) has given him the edge to be a real all-american contender.
I could be wrong but I think Dyer also had a very close match with Rosholt last year. Kevin Klemm would know the tourney and score, as he always remembers that stuff.
Devoe is steps away from "kicking in the door." He needs a lot of bottom work, but his positioning on the feet and defense is right on.
John, Tom Brands also commented to me, "I'd love the have that McCormick kid on my team. He's a hammer."
Richard - Justin is just about to get Rosholt's number after a 5 year rivalry, good time for Josh to move up and away. He 'got away' w. one last time 14-11.
Devoe - pinned Hazewinkel 18 mos ago in folkstyle and lost to Powell 1-0. Pinned his guy in the finals at Univ. not only beats ya, pins ya.
Bunch - his last loss was OT to Roberson at the OPEN. Beat Fleeger again right before that. Shawn is an 11x All American, 1x national champ.
Chris McCormick - teched NCAA runner up Dylan Long in his last tourney.
Agreed - Hoover is a stud, if he beats Tanner, it will be a revenge match as Tanner nicked his hs idol 3-2 in freestyle at FILAs.
Look at your watch - Joe Johnston is working out. This is hard to debate.
Keep an eye out for those Kansas kids, they're doing things you don't even hear about!
Also, unproven McCormick won 4 college opens last year. Wishful thinking -- we call that visualizing our success. It's like magic.
My vision is Kansas "winning" NCAAs by adding up points of Kansas kids all over.
You have more stats in your brain than Dan Patrick on ESPN!
I do recall that Stewart Bogart is and East Kansas kid. How do you think he will do this year?
I hear from their coaches at Oregon that our little Stewy is thick as a bull at about 163 lbs and still snapping everybody down. Should start at 149, I know we (KS) could use his NCAA points as he matures further.
More "points" for Kansas:
Jeremiah Beltran - one match away last year. The big guy can do it and we did not forget.
Gabe Conaghan - going 157, working HARD after winning 23 matches at 165 last season.
Daniel Peterson - HARD as a ROCK in Terry Brands' unit at UTC.
Tyler McCormick - T-Mac has arrived in D-1 for Missouri at 133, now you know why Collum transferred.
Ian Bork - He passes the elbow and shoots a single, I swear on the Stanford press guide!
Josh Carroll - Talk to me, Joshy. Hey Adam Venegas, talk for him!! GO KANSAS....we might just catch Okie St.. Let's get a program.
So when are you and all these guys moving to Lawrence? Or will it be K State?
The question is: What is preventing or discouraging these schools from adding a wrestling program? Title IX??? Then add women's wrestling too. Why won't that work? Use the same coaching staff for both teams and save money.
There is a possible way for this to happen, but I don't know if there is a will.
I have not talk to josh in some time but I asure you that he is doing well and will be at the nccas and i would look for him to be on the awards stand when it is said and done as for me I am still chasing the football dream as we play colorado this weekend
if any one is looking for a heavyweight let me know I miss it like hell it's still number one in my heart
my brother ben carlson told me to let you all know that his wrestling background is serving him well in his army ranger batallion. he's told me stories of their hand to hand combate stuff and sounds like he's still got a little bit of wrestling left in him
Adam go to UCO for a look I know they have 2 guys at heavyweight but the one is focusing too much on eating and I don't know if he'll ever make weight again. Or go to Newman I'm sure a heavyweight would be beneficial there too as it's a new program.
Bens name brought back alot of memories about a great kid and family. Tell him to stay healthy.
Adam why don't you come here to LCC
This is Best, Grant thinks you should come here also
Hey mr. Bogart, how is stew doing these days?
Stew has been lifting hard and getting ready for the official opening of practice which is this Sunday, i believe. However... it is you guys that are working really hard for all of us.
Good luck and stay safe.
Rob
Well Tell him I send my regards and I hope he has a great season, I sure he will do great along with all the other wrestlers from kansas who are now in the college spotlight.
Ben
This is great. Ben Carlson is gonna be a Ranger; Always had a great shot, work ethic and attitude. Wouldn't want a Ranger without all of the above.
Andy, every time I see you, I think about how similar you and Ben are and how older brothers pass on their knowledge and the youngest is often toughest. A great family for certain...keep up the great work Ben and tell your folks hello.
In the Bogart family however, Stewart started in 1st grade and sophomore Justin and 7th grader Curtis jumped in soon after. Never seen that before or since. Stew's first question in the rasslin room, "whenz r fust fite". "i'll get you a fight, little man.", I said.
After 4 years, I called him and Travis Allen Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova they wrestled (fought) so many times.
Adam - glad you saw that buddy, good luck on the gridiron. yer boy Basulto adjusted right away, hasn't lost the stupid war whoop yet though. I too think Josh challenges for hardware soon. cuz, when hasn't he?
KU or K-State, either one, K something please!
Venegas, I am sure 100% sure that Coach Lampe would probably hook you up with a scholarship here at Colby. Colby is a great place to wrestle with one of the greatest junior college coaches ever. Just look up his number on the colby website and give him a call. Anyhow, I am glad to hear that one of Kansas's great heavywieghts is getting back into wrestling and wish you luck.
-Eric Luedke
Hey good to hear from you Ben, Hope things are going well. Yea, you ain't lying about that brother thing Kevin but I think they all got it from the old man. Great Parents producing great offspring. I have always enjoyed working with all the Carlson's, class act and have made not just Olathe and East Kansas, but all of Kansas Proud.
Coach Peterman
I should be in town around mid January, I hope I can catch a couple tournaments. It is hard to stand on the side of the mat instead of out there wrestling, but it will be interesting to see who the top dogs are in the area.
Ill have to agree with Mr. klemm when you say the youngest is the toughest. Andy has hit the gym pretty hard and is weighing almost 130. I hope he doesn't do what his dumb brother did and cut a lot of weight. I know he is ready for the season to start.
hey eric thanks for the reply yes im looking around and weighing out my options what heayweights r there and how r u doing I thought I saw u as a all american last year?
adam hows the season going so far i talked to your sister the other day while see was at jakes and olivers game. yes i am working hard practice starts monday i will be red-shirting this year and will be wrestling 184 from now on. I agree that kansas needs a program it would be very tough.
look no further than Fort Hays State University. FHSU finished in the top 10 last year with three All-Americans and 5 national qualifiers, 3 of the NQ's are returning. All three of these NQ's have 2 years of eligibility left.
Our program is growing stronger every day!
It would be nice to have a D-1 program though.
I very much agree and would support a KS D1 Program, KSU or KU would get a top 10 program very quick. Eric and Kevin, you are both right on. The state has an excellent stable of coaches and athletes to get this done. Kevin, those stats might just be amunition in support of this. Its amazing to think how great of program there could be.
Adam, I told coach Lampe about you and he is going to call your old highschool coach so that he can get some information on you. We have only one heavywieght this year and he is good enough that he would make you a good workout partner. Very quick for a heavywieght. I am doing good and getting excited about hopefully signing early with a division one school.
-Eric Luedke
Luedke,
Who is the HWT currently at Colby that is back?
He is a freshman from NC, James Mason. He got 2nd in HS state
Adam we have three guys your size and two of them have plenty of speed for you to get a good work out You should consider checking out LCC and the come work out with up to see how you like it.
Has venegas decided yet ?
Venegas is looking for a team whose colors are pink and pink, remember his freestyle singlet, it was his favorite!
