I can't wait! There are a couple of duals coming up amongst our Kansas Junior Colleges!

Friday, November 5th, 7 pm

Sunday, November 7th, 3 pm
Colby faces Labette at Parsons

Let's here some predictions boys!!!
Posted By: mike fairleigh Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/20/04 10:24 PM
I like the chances that Colby has. If they have time to get the weight thing spread out with one of the shippers, prater, and gilliland all at the same weight (141) and if they can get that all worked out so that each of them are at a good, maintainable weight, they should be about impossible to beat, what with Luedke and Dennisthrown into the mix as well. If they don't get some of those guys up or down or whatever, though, they are in a lot of trouble against that duo. I think they will get it sorted out, but I am sure there are fans down southeast way that figure they'll win, too.
Guess we will see. Loks like some of those guys will miss Pheasant season opener!

Who needs pheasant when you can pin a turkey? Who will the turkeys be?
Posted By: NWKCAT Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/22/04 06:21 PM
Colby opening lineup looks to be pretty well set for the beginning of the season. Patton - 125 Lombardi - 133 Prater - 141 Schippers - 149 Schippers - 157 ??? Luedke - 165 Luedke - 174 Dennis - 184 Jaramillo - 197 Mason - Hwt.

I heard last night that Prater beat Gilliland in a couple of matches to earn the spot. Surprised?
Posted By: JordonB_184 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/22/04 09:03 PM
My prediction is CARDINAL VICTORY!
Posted By: mike fairleigh Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/23/04 04:21 AM
I am not surprised in the least-- Gilliland is good but I have known prater since he was 6 and I have NEVER seen anyone put desire and motivation into action like he can. At Pratt, he lost to Kreigbaum a couple of times, then Jones, and when he reached his sr. year he was unbeatable. I think he will be a guy to watch this season, you never see him trash talk anyone or do the tough guy glare, he just quietly comes up to the level of whoever he is wrestling and then step up another notch until he is successful. I think he will do really well in his matches.

Doesn't suprise me either. What works in high school doesn't always work in the college ranks.
Posted By: usawks1 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/23/04 09:27 PM
What's the Cardinal lineup look like?
Posted By: THE MADDOG Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/26/04 08:39 PM
Prater won the first match by 1
Gilliland won the second match by 4
Prater won the third match by 1
should be good battle all year between them both
Posted By: JordonB_184 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/27/04 02:49 AM
Our line up is not for the public to know until we show up to wrestle
Posted By: usawks1 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/27/04 03:31 PM
Coach Renfro, who I have a lot of respect for, has always played his cards close to the vest. What about Neosho's?
Posted By: bird2beaver33 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 10/28/04 08:29 PM
Colby's going to be a tough duel for Labette. But i think Labette has got what it takes to come out on top. They've got some kids in there that can put some points on the board. Wanna say best of luck to the birds out there and TCOB.

that wouldn't be emory would it??? ^

Well you caught me, it sure is. Who might you be?
Posted By: say_what Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/04/04 05:29 PM
Colby will not be a tough dual for labette, as a matter of ffact i think that it will be a cake walk for the trojans because labette has nobody good in any of their weight classes
Posted By: W. Heights AD Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/04/04 05:41 PM
ouch! Little extemem huh? I'll put $1,000 that it's not a cake walk for colby. what's the over/under for it?
Posted By: hokahey Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/04/04 08:26 PM
I have to agree w/Church. When you step in the Cards house, you're in for a battle! Mess w/the Bird, get the Beak! -Parks
Posted By: bird2beaver33 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/05/04 01:45 AM
Geez guy, no faith in labette. I dont think it'll be as easy as you put it. Church, you wouldnt happen to know rabbit would you. I swear i've heard your name around.
Posted By: EYEofTHEtiger_133 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/05/04 03:32 AM
say_what: I was just wondering where you got your information from that Labette doesn't have anyone good at any weight, because I'd have to disagree. Coach Renfro brought in a very talented class this year. I was able to see some of the new guys in action last weekend and would have to say that Colby in no way shape or form will have anything of a cake walk with the Dirty Birds. TCOB.
Posted By: say_what Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/05/04 04:10 AM
So I say something negative about this team and it seems like all you guys jump to defend them but I bet not a one of you still wrestles for labette. We will see on sunday when it is showtime.
Posted By: Bronco Wrestler Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/05/04 04:14 AM
Indeed Colby has a very talented group of kids, serveral names pop out outstanding, but the job that Labette CC has done is outstanding, not only the adminstration there, but the coaches i'm sure are top notch or they wouldn't be competing for national titles year in and year out, Aaron Meister, who is an aquaintance of mine through Chas Thompson, is a product of them, a national champion in fact, to say that they have no one is misleading although they do not have the big name stars i'm sure they aren't a bunch of nobody's, i look to it as being a very close dual, contrary to beliefs. It's not that we are coming to defend them just because you talked bad, we are just stating the facts, perhaps you are correct in your assumption but that's why we wrestle every match, but it's just not everybody that wrestles in college it takes something special, so it out to be closer than you expect.

I'm not sure who you think you are Say what but you can be sure that we are not going to allow any type of cake walk all over us. Our team is working extremely hard this year and We do have a lot of guys in each weight class who can get the job done.

Say what,

1st of who do you think you are? You go talking trash (which is absolutely ignorant)about a dual that has not even been wrestled, and then expect nobody to notice it. Especially Cardinal fans. For colby to earn this so called cake walk the Trojans better blank the Cardinals on the road! Will not happen! We have several key returning wrestlers with a couple of new birds in the nest!

Say what-

Were you even JV?
Posted By: JordonB_184 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/06/04 03:52 AM
Hey Meister I don't think this kid was even good enough top be JV maybe exhibition

Get him guys, let this boy know that birds of a feeather fly together. I heard of this guy though for real, he aint too bad, i think he placed 4th at Coffeyville in highschool, which happens to be a JV tourny, but he worked hard for that medal!

LCC wrestlers aiming high

Right now, Labette Cardinals wrestling coach Joe Renfro knows he has a lot of wrestlers. In a couple of days, he will have a better idea of how much talent he has amassed.

The Cardinal Gym will be abuzz with many of the Midwest's best junior college wrestlers this weekend when the Labette Cardinals host their annual Takedown Tournament on Saturday and take on Colby in a dual Sunday.

Labette has more than enough wrestlers to fill three starting lineups, and they all will be in action in Saturday's Takedown Tournament, which begins at 9 a.m.

"Everybody who's practicing right now will wrestle in the Takedown Tournament," Renfro said. "We've got a couple of guys who are hurt who won't go."

The Takedown Tournament might look a little different to wrestling fans, because it isn't a traditional wrestling tournament. The matches are wrestled entirely from the neutral position, and the results do not count toward a wrestler's win-loss record.

"It's kind of a different little deal," Renfro said. "Instead of your traditional wrestling match, it's all on your feet, a lot of action. This is a time where you can get out there and correct problems early. That's what this kind of tournament is for. It's not an official match, so you don't really win or lose, and you can see what happens and if anything's going wrong and take it from there."

Renfro said the Cards' performance in the tourney is important because it gives them a chance to focus on the most important aspect of college wrestling, dominating one's opponent from the neutral position.

"Especially in college, a lot of matches will be won or lost on your feet," Renfro said. "You'll probably spend about 80 percent of the time on your feet."

The Takedown Tournament will give Renfro a better idea of who is ready to break into the starting lineup before he has to pare down the roster to one starting lineup for Sunday's dual with Colby, starting at 3 p.m.

"The hard thing to figure out right now is who are our better guys," Renfro said. "We've got a few guys at each weight, and we really don't know. Just because this guy can beat that guy doesn't necessarily mean he's the best guy at that weight."

Renfro expects a challenge from Colby, especially with a few wrestlers he expects to be starters down the road out with minor injuries, including returning national champion Earl Jones.

"I think it's going to be kind of a barn-burner," Renfro said. "We've got a couple of our main kids out of the lineup, but Colby's probably the same way. It will be a good test early. They're a good team, I just think we're a little better."

The Cards finished sixth last season at the NJCAA national championships, their best finish ever, and they return a number of wrestlers from that team, leading Renfro to believe this season could be even better.

"We fell a little bit short last year of where we wanted to be," Renfro said. "But I think this year, with the guys we have back who were part of that team last year and the new additions we've made, I think we're going to be pretty tough. I think we'll finish even higher this year. The kids are working hard, and they want to be part of something special."

Last night in Chanute, the Panthers whooped Colby. Colby was in a hole early as Patton forfeited because of illness. And in the battle of the Matt's, on the mat, Matt Duke beat Matt Schippers.

Well, off to a Middle School Tourney. TTFN.
Posted By: bird2beaver33 Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/06/04 03:06 PM
Matt Dukes, didn't he graduate in '02 or am I thining of some one else? I think he might be from Baser-Linwood, again I could be wrong, but I'm trying to figure out who this Matt Dukes person is.
Posted By: kansas kid Re: Upcoming JuCo Duals!! - 11/06/04 03:14 PM
Dukes graduated in 01. He wrestled at Ellsworth for a semester or a year then took a couple off.

Could someone please post the results of the Colby & Neosso dual.

Thanks

Actually Dukes graduated in 02. Yeah Emery... you're thinking of the same guy.

Come on now, posting the team score without individual results is like kissing you sister!

Unfortunately, I had to give the family an afternoon, and was unable to attend. Give a guy a break and post individual scores. Please!!

Where is Neosho's Lockett from? I was surprised that Dennis could be beaten that badly, looks like the step up to JC wrestling is a tought one for him. Prater and the Luedke's appear to me on track, though.

Where was the cake walk on Sunday? Did I miss it? Good job Labette and keep working hard. Good luck with Newman on Tuesday.

I guess they stopped the music before they got the chance to start this " cake walk"

Lockett is from Ponca City! He is a returning National qualifier for the Panthers.

Strong start for Cardinals

Welcome to college wrestling, Alex Saunders.

And what an introduction it was.

Saunders, a freshman from Newcastle, Okla., was one of three Labette Cardinals who won individual titles at Saturday's Cameron Bradshaw Takedown Tournament, and he sealed the Cards' dual victory against Colby Community College with a 4-1 decision over Bobby Dennis in his first official collegiate match on Sunday at the Cardinal Gym.

When Saunders took the mat against Dennis, Colby had claimed its first lead of the dual, going ahead 17-15 on Zack Luedke's 7-3 decision over Blake Hohensee. With the Cards set to receive six forfeit points in the afternoon's final match because Colby's Ed Jaramillo didn't make weight at 197 pounds, Saunders only needed to avoid being pinned or beaten by 15 points to guarantee a Labette victory. He did better than that.

"I like to start it off or finish it, so I like that feeling of having it all on the line," Saunders said. "It's my first time to be on a good team, and I love it."

After neither wrestler scored in the first period, Saunders was able to ride Dennis for the entire second period. He then escaped four seconds into the third for a 1-0 lead and scored a takedown with 12 seconds left to ensure victory, for himself and the Cards.

"He did a good job," Labette coach Joe Renfro said. "Across the board, I could say every one of them did a good job. Except for a couple of mistakes, they did good. We had five freshmen in the lineup that have never wrestled a college match, and that's quite a bit of pressure on a guy."

Heavyweight Shane Grant set the tone for the dual, beating Colby's James Mason 9-3 in the opening match. After Grant took a 1-0 lead on a penalty point for stalling in the first period, Mason elected to begin the second period in the neutral position, thinking he could take advantage of his quickness to score a takedown.

"I wasn't surprised he chose neutral," Grant said. "He was faster than me, and he probably thought he could get his shot."

Grant turned the tables, though, getting a nice takedown on the edge of the mat with 1:11 left in the second, and he scored two more takedowns in the third period to win easily.

As a heavyweight, Grant is accustomed to ending the dual, rather than starting it, but his card came up, and he took care of business.

"I don't like to go first," Grant said. "I get pretty nervous."

Grant's win gave the Cards the early momentum, and Joey Heersche received a forfeit at 125 pounds to give Labette an early 9-0 lead.

David Parker's 9-4 decision of Daniel Prater at 141 pounds and Alvin Metcalf's 8-5 decision of Jeff Klinglesmith at 157 pounds kept the Cards in the lead, but brothers Eric Luedke and Zack Luedke got Colby back into it.

Eric Luedke won by technical fall over Donnie McMillin, getting Colby within 15-14, and Zack Luedke's win gave Colby its first lead, albeit a short-lived advantage.

"This is a good start for us," Renfro said. "There some positive things that we can build off of and grow quite a bit."

On Saturday, Saunders (190 pounds), David Hagerman (162) and Jared Shelton (205) won individual titles in the Takedown Tournament, and 16 other Labette wrestlers placed in the top four in their weight classes.

"We had quite a few placers, and the guys wrestled hard," Renfro said. "That's all I expect."

Heersche (125), Parker (142), Cody Lambotte (148), Luke Elmore (155), Metcalf (162) and Chad Smith (235) took second.

Brian Womble (131), Cory Allison (155), Adam Ingram (162), Dustin Martin (190) and Grant (Unlimited) took third.

Kevin Gray (125), Thomas Kelley (162), McMillin (170), Nathan Spain (205) and William Webster (235) took fourth.
