Colby College Sports Information
November 2, 2007
After losing just one sophomore from last year’s squad, the Colby Community College wrestling team and head coach Steve Lampe have good reason to be optimistic. Adding to the optimism are several talented newcomers to who are expected
to contribute.
“I’m very optimistic just judging by an impressive positive attitude the team has shown in preseason,” Lampe said. “Their work ethic also appears to be outstanding, and I think this will be a great bunch to work with.”
Colby’s first meet began this morning at the Northwest Wyoming Open in Powell, Wyo.
At the 125-pound weight class is Akmal Adilov, who qualified for nationals last season, but did not place.
He will be challenged by former Colby High School standout Danny Manius, who Lampe describes as a big, strong kid who is very tough. At 133 pounds is Timur Abdurakmonov, who is the brother of Muzaffar, a two-time national champion for CCC.
The real battle early for a spot appears to be at 141 pounds. Tyler Baker moves up from 133 pounds last year when he qualified for nationals. Also at 141 pounds is returning sophomore Lyubomir Kumbarov. At 149 pounds is incoming freshman T.J. Hepburn, who holds the best record in Connecticut history at 197-3. Lampe said fans should come watch this athlete, because “this guy is for real.”
Cole Garcia is expected to occupy the 157 pound weight class, Delanno Palmore will wrestle at 165, and Chris Sutton-Kearn will move down to 174 pounds. Kearn, Concordia sophomore, is a returning All-American who has the talent to win it all.
As I understand it, the following are the results from the Regional tournament:
Adilov - inj. dfltd to 4th and received wildcard
Mainus - 3rd place
Kumbarov - 2nd place
Hepburn - 1st place
Garcia - 2nd place
Palmore - 2nd place?
Miller - 3rd place
Sutton-Kearn - 1st place
I beleive Colby was 2nd in the team standing, with Labette winning the tournament.
