The Kansas Schoolboy Duels Team has finished their camp and are now preparing to depart for Indy at 10:00 this morning. Two Fort Hays State wrestlers, Mikel Delk and Tyler Gonzales, along with Mike Pursel, have supervised and coached the team during the camp. I would say it was an intense, grueling 3 or 4 days and that Mikel and Tyler are outstanding coaches and young men and we should be grateful to get coaches of their caliber. All the boys are real close to weight and anxiously await the tournament. Go Team Kansas!

Great Job Gentlemen!
Coach Peterman
I still need a 84 pounder for the Cadet team. Anyone have any ideas. Jermiah Breen just too big this year, so if you can think of any one else email me at Raslion1@sbcglobal.net
Thanks

Richard,
Is it okay to say we put a four alternates in against Idaho? We did... Might have taken them too lightly. I guess our 215 was pinning his opponent at the end of the first minute and the table workers either didn't know or forgot the continuation rule in Greco. They stopped the match and our guy was subquently pinned. Bad break.

Ouch. Pennsylvania was trying to do us a favor and beat Idaho. The match ended in a 39-39 tie with Idaho winning by criteria.
If we can win our last two and NJ beats Idaho, there will be a three way tie at 3-2.

That's it for tonight. Tomorrow morning, a tough Washington team awaits.
Nice day Schoolboy's!
Kansas loses to Washington this morning 49-36. It was a close dual with a few that could have changed the outcome. Dylan Penka won the 1st period 6-2 and was the victim of his own best move in the 2nd. At 205, Willis had the Washington kid on his back and the match was stopped for the WA kid crying. That could have also been a 7 point swing.
Kansas vs. Illinois is just starting for the last GR dual in the Pool round.

Greco wrapup from Indy:
Lost by 9 to Indiana for 7th place to finish 8th. Our goal was to place, but an exciting and wild finish by almost coming from behind to win the duel. We were 4 points behind going into the heavyweight match and had to pin to win outright. Not really fair for Jessie Austin from Baldwin, but he went out like a stallion against a HW his own size and did what he could, knowing we needed the fall to win the duel. Jessie got us in the medal round by winning the deciding match by fall against NJ, but this time he came up short, slipping out of a headlock and getting pinned. Heartbroken but elated to place, the kids all showed guts and class. We had people congratulate us on the way we handled adversity- Bo Pursel had Indiana's 85 on his back for maybe 30 seconds with all 3 refs signalling a fall, but the "head official" overruled the fall saying the signalling was not simultaneous. That would have put us in the lead going into the HW match, needing only a decision to win. The way Mike Pursel and Charlie Knox handled that was a lesson to the kids. Now on to freestyle with NJ first- another tough test. Tired but ready to roll- Go Team Kansas!

Kansas should win the next two, but they will be headed to the consolation bracket either way. Should be some great experience though, with a chance to win the bracket and place 9th in Freestyle. If we make the finals, that would put us top 10 in both GR and FS!
These Schoolboy's have shown amazing heart. Some of our wrestlers will have wrestled 18 matches by the end of the tournament!

It was a great and exhausting trip. We had a wonderful group of kids that wrestled their guts out. We did lose the weight cutting contest with several other teams having kids cut 15% of their body weight. I simply don't believe in that for kids this age. (kids cutting from 92 to 80 and from 99 to 85 is just stupid).
We placed 8th in Greco and 11/12 for Freestyle. Our freestyle pool was incredibly tough, but that is the way it is. A special thanks to Tom Williams, Tom Baughman, Tyler Gonzales, Michael Delk, Charlie Knox, Will Cokeley, the parents, and everyone who was so much help for these young men. Great job Kansas Schoolboys!

This is one contest I believe we are happy to lose!

Not only a special thanks to the athletes, parents and coaches but also to Mike Pursel for his leadership.
I could not have asked for more from the kids or coaches or parents. I could have asked for a few different calls from the refs, and I could have skipped spending Friday night in the hospital with Kidney stones! Ouch!.
Look forward to next year.

Postscript from Indy:
What a week! Thanks to Mike Pursel for all he did. You guys who have been there know what I mean about the volume of work that needs to be done for a tournament like this. He went over and above and plus had a kidney stone issue and spent a night in the hospital that had to be horrible for him. Also to Charlie Knox, a special guy and fabulous coach, for all he did. He carries our banner well, with dignity and class. And to Tyler Gonzales and Mikel Delk, our college wrestlers who coached and chaperoned, and did a great job. The "Peanut Gallery" (I say that with reverence, and was there myself last year with Perez, Tannenbaum, Moeder and the rest), led by Baughman, Woofter and Habluetzel, did a great job and helped out whenever we needed something. It was great to meet and spend time with Patty Ochs, John Mason, the Seatons, and all the rest. Most of all thanks to the parents of the kids who let their kids go for a week in the summer and trusted us with them, I know what that means. Last to the boys for wrestling and working like champions, you deserve your medals- wear them with honor. Still proud in Kansas.
