If the challenger beats the state champ, does the challenger take the state champ's spot & the state champ is no longer on the junior dual team ?
Posted By: BJobe Re: Junior Dual Team! - 05/05/14 11:52 PM
I have a concern about the petition. It seems that guys that are petitioning, are automatically placed ahead of the state runner-up, 3rd place finisher, etc. Shouldn't they have to challenge their way up the ladder?

The winner of the challenge will be the starter. The state champion is guaranteed a spot on the team, regardless of the result of the challenge.

All challengers are equal. The requirements to challenge are:

1. Petition prior to the state tournament with an approved reason.
2. Placing in the top three at state allows you to petition to challenge the state champion.

I am encouraging all runners-up and third place finishers to turn in their petitions by midnight tonight!

How are there a couple new names added to this, that did not attend state, after Saturday's update - it states the deadline was Friday at midnight

All of the names listed met the deadline. We have timed e-mails or faxes. It was just a matter of updating the post on the forum. A few of our elite athletes missed the deadline and will not wrestle for the team.

There needs to be a system to the challenge process. For example, in freestyle at 126 Christian Bowen will be challenged by DJ Ballard, Sean Deshazer, Doug Newcomb, and anyone else who wants to? He might have to wrestle 6-12 matches at camp just to keep his spot? Guys that petition should be at the bottom of the ladder, and must work their way up. The state champion did his job, and shouldn't have to wrestle anyone and everyone who wants a shot.

I understand that this will not happen at many weights, but criteria must be established.

All challengers should also have to make weight at camp to be allowed the challenge. In my opinion, guys shouldn't be allowed to change weights from what they wrestled at state.

You are not understanding the approved challenge process in place. It's exactly like the World Team challenge tournament. The champion will only wrestle the winner of those that are qualified to enter the challenge tournament. That champion must be beaten two out of three. There will be a 4 pound weight allowance at the challenge tournament.

This process has been clearly posted on this forum and has been approved. (Posted on April 17th)

SUMMARY:
• Friday, May 2, 2014 (by Midnight) – Athletes interested in participating in Cadet or Junior Duals, but cannot make it to the State tournament must have the official petition form filed with the Challenge Board.
• Sunday, May 4, 2014 – State Freestyle and Greco tournaments
• Tuesday, May 6, 2014 – State tournament participants deadline to file to challenge at a different weight class, different age group, second chance, or injury.
• Challenges are 2 out of 3 and will take place at the Duals camps (mini tournament to determine challenger in the event there are 2 or more challengers)
*** In the event the selection process as described above yields NO competitors willing to fill a spot on the team, the deal team staff will then have the opportunity to select ANY eligible wrestler to fill the “spot” on the team.

Yes. As stated above, the challengers are in parentheses. The second team will have a few positional wrestle offs but does not have the same qualifying criteria. I have tried to fill that second roster with the best available wrestlers.

The maximum roster allows for 24 spots on each team. With 15 weights, that gives us 9 weights to be two deep on a team. At some weights we will be two deep on both teams. With three wrestlers, one team will be two deep with the other wrestler taking all the matches for the other team. The criteria will be followed to fill the first team unless a spot is empty or depth is needed. The second team looks very solid and has many Cadets, which will help develop our future teams.

The Junior National Duals are alive and well! There was amazing competition in Oklahoma City and our Kansas Juniors left it all on the mat. While the end result was not as lofty as years past, there were several encouraging stories from this years teams.

I want to thank the coaching staff of Scott Rieck, Curtis Chenoweth, Ryne Cokeley, Chas Thompson and Derek Koehn. These guys are true teachers of the sport. I want to thank Will Cokeley for coaching, reffing at camp, driving the team and for spearheading our new direction for our dual teams. It was a monumental effort on his part. A big thank you to Dan Gentzler for his work in our pre-camp in Wichita. Thanks to Kapaun Mt. Carmel high school for hosting the camp. Thank you to Kathy Juby for her always prompt responses to our registering requirements. Thanks also to Mark Dulgarian for driving the team and for his organizational help. I will never take the Kansas Wrestling community for granted. We have one special family!
