I was wondering about how serious this club is. What I mean is if I wanted to get involved would it be that I had to go all the time? When and where are practices? Who would I contact?

TCarmona, I would suggest contacting Erik Hinckley. Aaron and others have said that he is very involved with helping the club and I would suspect that he could help you or direct you to the right person.

Beau is who you want to get a hold of. He will know when pratices are and what kind of commitment is needed. Capt. Hinkley would be glad to direct you also. I myself plan on trying to utilize these college wrestlers for our kids club in Manhattan. If there is anyone going to K-State that would like to help out e-mail me. We will try to help the guys that help us with the little kids.

I bet they do. Nathan Hartshorne the KU club president actually goes around campus chalking up the sidewalks about practice nights and times. I am going to put something on the High School forum about signing up for the KSU and KU teams.

I tried to email the guy on the wrestling contact for the club and my mail got sent back. Don't know if he's got spam blocker or if that is the guy to talk to.

I hope KU gets to wrestle at the Manhattan meets. If not, someone should change it so they do. If so, you can expect myself and Mill Phanuel to dominate the competition. Just like we did at the Melvin Douglas Invitational of 03.

The Ryan Kaufmann(a.k.a. Kaufmann Brand Open) is the toughest 1 day open in the Nation. I heard that Newman is doing a tournament that day as well and I think UTD was going to do one too.

Lets see.....

Toughest open tournament in the nation or Chenoweth....

I think that's an easy choice. That is, if you want to see GOOD wrestling.

UNO is an extremely long tournament it starts at 9 am and last year the final match ended a little after midnight.

Just heard from the UTD coach that the dual scheduled for the 21st of January is being bailed out on by UTD as they are going to the TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CLASSIC@ Florida Univ on that day!

UTD has a pretty impressive travel schedule!

Aaron, did you get on their website? It is pretty impressive. It appears they are fairly organized with a booster club behind the effort. They also seem to be well set up to collect donations to the club. Look into the information section, especially the parent info to see how they are setting themselves up to receive funding.

Vince, I have visited their web site and have gotten to know Coach Wilson over the years from his association with the Texas Stars (A Kids club in Texas,) and his association with the Team Texas Cadet Dual Team. He is a classy guy and a good coach. I also think he is a pretty good friend of Eric Akin.

This e-mail was sent yesterday to a group of people who have form a group promoting the addition of NCAA Division I wrestling to a Kansas college or university. The sender Erik Hinckley at end of it asked to pass it on to all interested in supporting the Kansas State wrestling program.

"K-State Wrestling Supporters,

Greetings!! The K-State team is building steam for this season. They've been conditioning training and will hit the mats starting on 3 October. They'll practice in the K-State REC center at 7:00 P.M. Monday thru Friday.

Their Schedule is currently as follows:

Oct 10-13 K-State Intramural Tournament (This is a really impressive event made up of only K-State students!! Many State Champs participate)
Oct 29 Lindenwood Open St Louis, MO
Nov 5 Labette Takedown Tourney Parsons, KS
Nov 19 NCWA Kickoff Tourney Texas (or Ryan Kaufman Open in Omaha)
Dec 3 Fort Hays State Open Hays, KS
Jan 14 Glen Brand Open Omaha, NE
Jan 28 Great Plains Open Lincoln, NE
Feb 24-25 SW Conference Tournament TBA (K-State is returning Champs)
Mar 9-11 NCWA National Championships TBA (K-State finished 10th last year)

Team Background (provided by Drew Welchert, Team President)

The Kansas State University Wrestling team was founded in 1999. The team competes against over 100 others in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA), a growing body supporting the growth of collegiate level wrestling. In the team's six year history it has produced 18 NCWA All-Americans, 25 Southwestern Conference Champions, four Southwestern Conference Team Championships, and four Top 10 National finishes. Through Hard work and determination Kansas State has emerged as a power in the NCWA and become the most dominant team in the Southwestern Conference.

The state of Kansas is home to one of the best high school wrestling programs in the nation.... Kansas State Wrestling hopes to give these wrestlers an opportunity to compete and be recognized at the collegiate level. Recently, Seth Lytle, of Abilene, Kansas, used Kansas State Wrestling as a springboard to a scholarship and starting spot on the NCAA Division II Fort Hays State Wrestling team. All this came after placing 2nd at the NCWA National Championships in 2001. Lytle went on to become an All-American at Fort Hays State University.

The Wildcat Wrestling Team grows larger and more popular every year and hopes to contain over 25 members during the 2005-06 season. These wrestlers will have the opportunity to compete against other collegiate level wrestlers from all over the country. With hard work and determination, Kansas State University will have a chance to be 2006 NCWA National Champions.

Boosters

The K-State Wrestling Boosters had our first Meeting on 11 September 05. We met at Porters' West Bar & Grill in Manhattan, KS and watched the Kansas City Chiefs first regular season game. Then we moved next door to talk Wrestling.

Here's a synopsis of the meeting:

The team is in good posture to advance in the national rankings. Five additional team points last year would have moved them from 10th to 6th place. This year, they have some quality new recruits, a growing group of supporters that are getting organized, a better organized internal structure, and a small purse to get started with. We all would like to see the team progress into a Division I NCAA team, but all agree that the best way to do that is build up the solid NCWA team and keep moving in that direction. Currently, most of the teams support comes from Manhattan, but we need to expand the base.

People

We are building the booster club and have the following volunteer positions filled:
President: Erik Hinckley
Alumni Rep: Aaron Sweazy
Fund Raising: Ron Tacha
Transprotation: Dave Donnert
Moover & Shaker: Mark Miller (this is not an official title, because he just wanted to move mountains behind the sceens)

We'll need to fill the following positions and more to keep things moving like they are:
Lawyer, Faculty Rep, Member Development, Team Doctor, Scheduler, Marketing, Fort Riley Rep, Treasurer

Money

Until now, the K-State team has been supported financially by The University, The Optomist Club of Manhattan, The Army, and some generous doners. The Boosters have committed to assisting the team with fundraising.

Ron Tacha has begun leading the charge for money. He has a great quote "If we can not fund the club team, then we have no chance of getting a DI team." That very accurately captures the sentiments of everyone that I've talked to about getting it going here. Ron says that you can send checks to:

K-State Foundation
2323 Anderson Ave
Suite 500
Manhattan, KS 66502

You must earmark your donation for the wrestling team only. I encourage you to e-mail the club President (Drew Welchert) at acwss25@yahoo.com so he knows to expect your money in the account.

Priorities

After Money, the other immediate team and club priorities are as follows:

1. Get Photos taken and get them out in the public with schedules. (Dave Donnert will assist with that)
2. Get a website (Mark Miller will work it)
3. Solid Practice schedule: (Coach Beau Tillman is working on that).
Bob Gonzalez is Manhattan HS new coach and is working with on that as well.

Next Meeting

We'll meet again next at Porters' West Bar & Grill in Manhattan, KS on Sunday 16 October for the Redskins Game.

After the game we'll head next door to my office for the meeting at 3003 Anderson Ave, Suite 1001B (next to the DMV).

Please pass this along to anyone who might be interested in supporting Kansas State University's Wrestling Program.

Thanks for your support!!

Erik

I also would like to add that if there are any and all KSU alumni wrestlers that read these post please contact me with your name… years attend KSU and brief bio. I would like to dedicate a Web page to these gladiators of the past.
