Why 119 was taken away...well, as a college athlete...I can probably tell you the truth as to why...for the most part when you get to college you start having another growth spurt if you haven't already...they bumped up every weight class by roughly 7lbs after I believe the 1998-1999 season...a lot of guys that wrestled 103 and 112 loved the 119 class, but bottom line you get to college you tend to get bigger for various reasons, I know a few wrestlers died from cutting the weight and I see guys from various schools now that struggle to make weight classes ...125 is great...if you want to wrestle in college some advice...Don't expect to get a decent offer if you are 103 your senior year and possibly 112...there are some very talented guys that are 119 even that get overlooked due to size...College practices you will lose a lot of weight...I usually see anywhere from 25-40 lbs in a season from once people start working out...it's intense, so the coaches don't want a toothpic coming in for the most part, unless you are in shape from working out so much that you are a toothpic. If you are 112, 103 or whatever and you want to wrestle in college....REDSHIRT and get bigger!!!

just so you guys know, there never was a 119 lbs weight class in college. It was 118 lbs. those weight classes changed after there were 3 deaths in college wrestlers in one year. I wrestled 118 my freshman year in college.

I believe it is more of a problem that there is not at least one more weight class between 197 and 285. I think there are more potential college age athletes that would be in that 88 pound weight differential than college age athletes who are legimately under 119. Young people are bigger in our society today than they were 20 or more years ago and that trend will continue. I think wrestling weight classes in high school and college need to reflect that change. It is incredible that there is not at least one more weight class between 197 and 285. I think we turn a lot of excellent athletes (high school football players) away from wrestling due to these large weight differentials. At least high school has a 215 class but it should probably have a 235 or 240 class too.
I think wrestling's weight classes were set up when the average sizes were smaller and that wrestling is not changing the weight classes fast enough to reflect the increased average height and weight in society. I graduated from high school in 1969 and I was considered big as a 205 pound tackle. I don't even think that a 205 pound kid would be considered to be a big high school back today.
Edited: It should be noted that the National College Wrestling Association (NCWA-the college division for schools without regular wrestling programs) does have a 235 pound division. I think it is time for the NCAA, NAIA and other divisions to include a 235 or 240 division.
