Martin scored two points with only two seconds remaining in the match, giving the gold a three point edge going into the final match. Ms Grater -
Thought Danny did a nice job of staying mentally focused when Keane came out with a lot of physical activity. Looked like Danny was able to weather the storm and use his talent and poise to distance himself and earn the easy win.
One thing I did notice though was the size/stature difference between the two. Keane looked huge compared to Danny, which prompts me to ask where did Danny cut from to get to 149?

Some are guessing it will depend on how tight his practice room bouts with Delk are - if its a dead heat or close to it the arm chair coaches suspect they will burn Delk's final year and let Grater improve even more before he makes his varisty debut. But that is pure speculation - perhaps Mrs. Grater can offer more insight for us. Malloy, Peterson, Gonzales and Stevens wrestled at CMSU, but are all expected to red-shirt.

I think it would be a good idea if they are that close. I know Taplin up at UNO has 3 losses on the year 2 to his teammate and National Champion J.D. Naig of UNO by 1 point. He lost to Paulson of Iowa State by 1 or 2 this past week as well. Taplin will redshirt unless Naig gets injured.

Nordhues still perfect; FHSU wrestlers defeat Central Mo. Jan. 6, 2006
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The No. 13 Fort Hays State University wrestling team won 10 of 12 matches in defeat of No. 16 Central Missouri State University, 29-6, Thursday night at the CMSU Multipurpose Building.
"It was a good win for us," Tiger head coach Cody Bickley said. "Our guys as a whole wrestled really well. It very easily could have been a shutout but getting eight out of 10 is a good start. Going to their place and beating the No. 16 team was the type of statement we were wanting to make."
The Mules started the night with Keaton Baker, No. 5 in the country, winning a 7-3 decision at 133 against Tiger redshirt freshman James Annon. That was followed by 141-pound senior Jeremy Johnson getting a 9-0 major decision against No. 5 Mike Hansen, a senior and returning All-American for the Mules.
"Jeremy just dominated that match," Bickley said. "He wrestled extremely well. He went up 5-0 and kept plugging away. He was never not in control of that match. Just kept putting points on the board. A very convincing win and agaisnt a returning All-American that speaks volumes for him."
At 149-pound junior Mikel Delk got a 7-6 decision and 157-pound Tiger junior David Nordhues, ranked No. 4 in the country, remained perfect on the season picking up his seventh win with a pin at the 5:58 mark.
Freshman Blake Malloy was the Tigers only other loss falling in a 9-6 decision to the Mules' Travis Barabarick.
From there it was all Tigers with decision wins for senior Aaron Meister at 174 pounds, junior Mike Howell, No. 4 at 184, Dustin Trego, 197, senior Andrew Ubben, No. 5 at heavyweight, and senior Dustin Greenemeyer at 125.
Fort Hays is now 2-0 in duals this season and returns to action Jan. 14-15 at the NCAA II National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
"We're excited about it," Bickley said. "We've done what we wanted to do up to this point. It's a matter of fine tuning a few things now but we have plenty of prep time. I want them mentally fresh and I feel like they're there. Just fine tune a few things and take it on up."

FHSU wrestlers open with Nebraska-Omaha in National Duals By NABIL SHAHEEN Hays Daily News
As they came back from lunch Wednesday to see the release of the pairings for the NWCA Division II National Duals, the Fort Hays State University wrestling team was met with a little surprise in head coach Cody Bickley's office.
The team's first-round opponent would be the University of Nebraska-Omaha - No. 1 team in the country and two-time defending national champion.
But senior David Nordhues and everybody else that was in Bickley's office at the time had the same thought.
"There's times when you see something like that and it takes the wind out of you," Bickley said. "But not this group. There's no doubt about it, it's going to be a dogfight. We've got nothing to lose. They're the two-time defending national champs and we get the first shot at them in a dual situation."
The No. 10 Tigers will hook up with the No. 1 Mavericks at 9 a.m. Saturday on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. UNO is also the defending champion at the national duals.
Bad news for UNO - they did not get the typical 1 vs. 16 matchup. Good news for FHSU - it's a head-to-head dual they long since wanted to have with the best team in the country.
"We've got stuff to prove," said 174-pound senior Aaron Meister. "We've got nowhere to look but up. When you're on top it's hard to stay motivated, you've nowhere to go but down and you've got people on your back. We plan on going there and giving them a dogfight."
Meister, 10-3 on the season, will be challenged by J.D. Naig, the reigning national champion at 165 pounds who just moved up to 174 this semester. "In my opinion he's a 65-pounder," Meister said. "You're coming into my weight class and I don't like that. I'm going to make him realize that he needs to be down a weight class."
"You talk about some grudge matches, there is definitely some big time matches in the first round and we're excited about it," Bickley said. Other intriguing matchups for Fort Hays include:
- the 157-pound match which pits No. 4 Nordhues (7-0) against No. 1 Patrick Allibone, the defending national champion.
- the 184-pound match between FHSU junior Mike Howell (14-2), No. 4, and No. 5 Nate Oviatt.
- the heavyweight match between FHSU senior Andrew Ubben (10-2), who is No. 4 in the country, and three-time defending national champion Les Sigman. Ubben was runner up to Sigman after an injury default in the 2004 national championship match.
"It's huge," Howell said. "Everybody is just so pumped. We've been all business this week. They're No. 1 in the nation. We've got nothing to lose so bring 'em on. They're the ones that have something to prove."
The winner of the match between UNO and Fort Hays will get the winner of No. 16 Gannon vs. No. 8 Augustana (South Dakota).
Teams work in a double-elimination style tournament until a champion is crowned though it is unique in that the best any first or second round loser can do is fifth while the semifinal losers battle for third.
"The whole team thing with bonus points is huge," Howell said. "It's not just about a win anymore, it's about your team. That one or two points could mean going home. Your team is counting on you and that puts pressure on you."
Fort Hays is 2-0 in duals this season coming off a big victory at then-No. 16 Central Missouri State University, 32-15.
"It just gives us confidence and momentum going into this," Meister said. "We pretty much dominated them and should have had 10 out of 10. I like this. This is the best feeling I've had since I've been here and I think we're improving daily. I really couldn't ask to be in a better spot right now."
The Tigers departed 5 a.m. this morning for the eight-hour drive to Cedar Falls, Iowa. Sunday's championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. Preparation continued Thursday afternoon, though. The big show is not until March, but no doubt the Tigers have been waiting for this one for a while and for that, intense practices were taken to an even higher level.
"When you look at a big tournament coming up you want to take that extra shot at the edge of the mat, you want to push that little bit more you've got, you want to fight a little bit harder," Howell said. "It's just that little stuff that seems like it comes out in the big tournaments."

The UNO v. Hays dual had multiple Kansas matchups (3 that I see). I swore Garcia beat Greenemeyer 14-7 though.

First Loss for Tiger in Win First loss for Tiger in win By NABIL SHAHEEN Hays Daily News Before the lights were dimmed, the music turned up and the wrestlers out of their warmups, the Fort Hays State University wrestling team had 24 points on Western State (Colo.) College. With four open weights, the Mountaineers, ranked 14th in NCAA Division II, proved to be no match for the No. 9 Tigers on Saturday night in Gross Memorial Coliseum as FHSU rolled to a 40-6 win. The win kept the Tigers a perfect 3-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals and moved them to 6-1-1 on the year. "The score looks good but then again they were plagued with sickness," senior heavyweight Andrew Ubben said. "This is a good team. They're a tough team and they'll be a tough team to contend with for the RMAC championships in a couple of weeks." The Mountaineers (8-2 overall, 2-2 RMAC) host the RMAC/ West Regional on Feb. 23 but on Saturday, it was all Fort Hays, winning eight of 10 matches. The biggest loss came at 157 pounds where senior David Nordhues (12-1), four days after he received the No. 1 ranking in his weight class, suffered his first defeat to No. 7 Zach Lee (14-4). The two went into the third period with Lee up 2-1 after a takedown in the second. For a match in which Nordhues was almost in complete control, Lee picked up an escape with less than 30 seconds left to take a 3-1 decision. "Dave is a tough competitor," Ubben said. "He feeds off of ranked guys. He's beaten the best and, hey, everyone has their faults. He's a tough kid and he'll feed off of it and come back better than ever next week." The win for Lee avenged a loss to Nordhues the last time the two met in the All-American round at last year's NCAA II national meet. At 141 pounds, senior Jeremy Johnson (11-6) led 8-0 midway through the third period and finished with a 10-3 win. "Jeremy Johnson did a great job," Fort Hays coach Cody Bickley said. "That was big for him and he's wrestling well." Following Johnson at 149 pounds was the only pin of the night and that belonged to Tiger junior Mikel Delk (9-6) who, up 6-0 in the first period, got the pin at 2:55. "He looks good, that was a great match," Bickley said. "I had to open up and it felt good," said Delk, who sat out last year. "It's just been a slow starting season. I didn't hold anything back, I just have to get some of that rust off from last year." Ubben (14-4) had the longest match of the night, going into overtime to defeat senior Kip Cullin (15-6) by a 2-1 decision. "That kid is good," Ubben said. "It's always like that every match he wrestles, it's always like one point." Other results for the Tigers included: Junior Kory Lira (5-2) with a forfeit win at 125. Junior Derek Patterson (8-4) with a forfeit win at 133. Sophomore Phil Hart (11-6) with a forfeit win at 165. Senior Aaron Meister (14-5) with a forfeit win at 174. Junior Dustin Trego (10-8) with 3-1 loss at 197. Western junior Cody Mumma (17-8) had tied the match with Trego at 1-1 in the third period and got a two-point takedown with 10 seconds left. On Friday night, Fort Hays took care of Colorado School of Mines, 34-3, getting big wins from Nordhues, who won a 20-7 major decision, 197-pound senior Aaron Meister, 11-2 major decision, 184-pound junior Mike Howell, 21-6 technical fall and Ubben with a pin in 1:20. The Tigers return to action Thursday at No. 11 Adams State (2-3, 1-1). "I think we're getting better," Bickley said. "That's what I want to see. Every once in a while we'll have a few individual heartbreaks. But as a team, as long as we keep progressing and putting up points on the board, that means we're progressing and getting better." Tigers Send Eight to National Meet! Tigers send eight wrestlers to national meet By The Hays Daily News GUNNISON, Colo. - Fort Hays State University has never in its long and storied history had anywhere near eight wrestlers qualify for the national tournament. But the No. 10 Tigers proved to be peaking at the right time Saturday, advancing eight of its 10 wrestlers out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference / NCAA II West Regional. Fort Hays scored 114 points to take third place behind Adams State (Colo.) College, 1141/2, and champion University of Nebraska-Kearney's 133 as the Lopers won their fifth straight title. "I've been around some great tournaments," Tiger coach Cody Bickley said. "But that semifinal round where we punched six through was probably the funnest tournament that I've been in." It started at 125 pounds for the Tigers as junior Kory Lira got a 5-2 decision over Chadron State's Devlon Webb to take third place. Junior Mikel Delk, who picked up his first NCAA II national ranking last week at No. 8, advanced by a 6-5 decision over Western State's Camille DuPont, the No. 1 wrestler. "Mikel's win got us all jacked up and we just rolled from there," Bickley said. Delk was one of three champions including 157-pound senior David Nordhues and 174-pound senior Aaron Meister. "The guys were really relaxed and obviously that's the best we've wrestled as a team all year long," Bickley said. "To do that at the regional championships is just great. That semifinal round was just amazing." Junior Andrew Ubben took runner up at heavyweight as did junior Mike Howell at 184 pounds and sophomore Phil Hart at 165. "The biggest thing that sticks out to me is Phil Hart," Bickley said. "He was down in that match, had to get an escape in the final seconds and not only gets the escape but reversed him on his back. It was a lot of fun." The other qualifier for the Tigers was 197-pound junior Dustin Martin, who finished fourth. Junior Derek Patterson was one match and two points away from advancing as he dropped his fourth-place match 5-3 at 133 pounds and bounced back with a win to take fifth in the tournament. "Taking eight guys makes it more fun for them," Bickley said. "It gives us a better chance. We've put ourselves in a position to be in the thick of things and that's what's exciting." Brackets for the NCAA II Championships, March 10-11 in Findlay, Ohio, were to be released this afternoon. "Right now we're just getting ready to go," Bickley said. "That was an emotionally and physically hard tournament so nothing intense following a regional tournament like that. The biggest thing right now is just keeping guys where we're at - healthy and ready to go."
