Now when you say Students...that includes college students right? afterall it is a college dual and it would only make sense in my opinion.

149 Drue Herl, Colby, KS
157 Eric Luedke, Colby, KS
165 Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov, Tashkent, Uzbekistan - returning national champ
174 Zach Luedke, Colby KS
184 C.B. Dolloway, Mt. Gilead, OH - returning national champ
197 Maine Ardery, Engelwood, CO or Ed Jaramillo, Rocky Ford, CO

WOW...looks like the Sponsel v. Dollaway match was a dandy....looks like Sponsel could shine very easy on the Collegiate stage...Dollaway had some big wins last year out in Las Vegas against some university competition, and the fact that he's the defending champ...looks like Sponsel is ready.

Taking nothing away from Sponsel but the match had as much to do with Dolloway looking terrible!! Sponsel did capitalize and from my viewpoint, had Dolloway pinned late in the match.

Mr. Hinderliter:

Perhaps your comment "Taking nothing away from Sponsel but the match had as much to do with Dolloway looking terrible!!" was made in haste as Sponsel defeated the number one ranked wrestler for Ellsworth.

It has been my experience that one wrestler has more to do with making another look "terrible" than the wrestler who looks terrible. No wrestler intentionally looks "terrible"!

Team Neosho Moves To 2-0
November 6, 2003

Baldwin, KS.-- On the campus of Baker University, competing in the Collins Center, the No. 8 Panthers of Neosho County, dominated the No. 3 Panthers of Ellsworth (IA) 29-11. NCCC won seven of ten matches wrestled on the night.

"The big match of the evening, was freshman and Wichita native, John Sponsel pulling the upset over No. 1 ranked Steve Pikar at 174 lbs."

Sponsel has a great season going and is to be commended. He has wrestled well against a couple of pretty tough opponents.

I do however find it interesting that people have forgotten that while Dollaway was not particilarly sharp in the match and definately not in shape, he still managed to lead 7-4 at the end of the first period and 10-4 at the end of the second.

As Coach Lampe put it, in the third period Dollaway got frustrated at his inability to end the match with a fall or tech fall. He made a poor shot and got caught in a five point move that nearly got him pinned.

Take a way that mistake and it would have seemed to be a pretty wide margin of victory for Dollaway on a nite that he was no where near his best.

Just my observation.

Dear Les:

Is that not why wrestling matches are THREE (3) PERIODS?

Unfortunate for Coach Lampe to make excuses for an outstanding wrestler, and I am sure they will both concentrate their efforts on conditioning to ensure this situation does not repeat itself.

I commend you for coming to the defense of one of your hometown college wrestlers.

I know Sponsel personally and can state that my personal opinion is that John has often not been the most talented athlete on the mat, but his heart and determination, along with his tremendous work ethic help him to compensate and take advantage when he has worn down the competition.

Darn those mistakes!

These are early season matches, and only time will tell how these competitors fare in the future!

Salyer -

Lampe was not making excuses for Dollaway at all when he made the remark. In fact he was doing just the opposite. He used the comment to reinforce the fact that you have to remain composed on the mat at all times or your frustration could cost you a match you were capable of winning.

Case in point - Dollaway leading comfortably going into the final period, makes a mental miscue and is lucky the referee did not call the fall.

And for those of you not familar with Lampe's coaching style - shape usually is an issue early in the season as he coaches technique during the early season and focuses on conditioning after the fundamentals are in place. This is especially true in a year when he has 8 freshman in the starting line-up.

My comments were to point out that I merely found it interesting that people on this site and especially in the chat room at themat.com site are already writing Dollaway off based in that performance.

With that in mind I offered two observations - 1). Dollaway was one mistake away from winning very comfortably, but he still won and 2). He did so against an very talented opponent who is going to turn a lot of heads at the juco level.

I think you are selling Sponsel short. He appears to be the real deal to me.

Richard, Sorry a didn't respond earlier but I've been a bit under the weather. I have been fortunate to attend both the Colby / Neosho dual and the Ellsworth / Neosho dual. I stand by my evaluation of Dollaway.

My take on Sponsel. He is an excellent counter wrestler as you stated. His mat wrestling is quite unique. He is the type that will drive a coach crazy. He turns situations around with his "outhouse to the penthouse" style. I am sure Myrick will survive!

Clearly, John has looked excellent in the early season matches!!! I hope he can keep it up!
