I don't see Joe competing for Labette next year. He will take an Olympic redshirt. After he makes the Olympic team look for him in Beijing 2008! Go get em Joe... bring home the Gold! He will also fall in love with Chinese gymnast and expatriate to the Shandong province. Where he will master the Nija Arts. Just my prediction!

C. Transfers from a Four-Year College or from a Non-NJCAA Member College.
Student-athletes transferring from a four-year college or a non-NJCAA member college are either immediately eligible upon transfer or must serve a probationary period of 16 calendar weeks. The following rules determine the student-athlete's eligibility status.
1. Immediate Eligibility – To be immediately eligible, with no probation required, student-athletes must satisfy the provisions of Section 4.D or 4.E. (Use the rule which is applicable to the transfer student-athlete).
NOTE: Before a student-athlete can participate in a second season of an NJCAA certified sport, the provisions of Section 4.F must be satisfied.
2. Probation of Sixteen Calendar Weeks – A probationary period of 16 calendar weeks and the completion of one academic term with twelve passing credits and a 2.00 GPA or higher is required of student-athletes who did not satisfy the academic provisions of Section 4. Student-athletes serving this 16-week probation period may be added to the eligibility roster at any time after satisfying the provision of the probation period.

NOTE: Before a student-athlete can participate in a second season of a NJCAA certified sport, the provisions of Section 4.F must be satisfied.

Section 4. REQUIREMENTS FOR ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY
The following rules shall be used to determine a student-athlete's eligibility for athletic competition in any one of the certified sports of the NJCAA. THIS ENTIRE SECTION MUST BE READ BEFORE A STUDENT-ATHLETE'S ELIGIBILITY STATUS CAN BE DETERMINED.
A. Student-athletes must be making satisfactory progress within an approved college program or course as listed in the college catalog.
B. Student-athletes must be in regular full-time attendance within fifteen (15) calendar days from the beginning of classes of the term in which the student-athletes choose to participate.
MINI-SESSIONS:
1. This fifteen (15) day rule can apply to the starting date of a mini-session within a regular session and shall be a published date in the college catalog or schedule of classes for that term.
2. A student-athlete enrolling in a mini-session must have enrolled within fifteen (15) calendar days of the beginning of the term in which that mini-session is offered.
3. The mini-session must begin prior to the date of the first contest and end prior to or concurrently with the regular term.
4. Student-athletes that do not conform to this rule are ineligible throughout the remainder of the term.
C. Student-athletes must maintain enrollment in twelve (12) or more credit hours of college work as listed in the college catalog during each term of athletic participation. Student-athletes that drop below twelve (12) credit hours become immediately ineligible for athletic participation.
QUARTER ELIGIBILITY
D. Prior to the last official date to register for the second full-time quarter, as published in the college catalog, a student-athlete must have passed twelve (12) quarter hours with a 1.75 GPA or higher.

If the student-athlete has been enrolled in two (2) quarter terms or less, the second season requirement becomes 28 quarter hours with a 2.00 GPA or higher.

In the 165# bout Morgan had Sprang in a front headlock down on the mat. After a brief struggle, Sprang went limp and was out for a few seconds. Morgan was penalized for an illegal hold.

Sprang regained his senses and wanted to continue but the referee sought the advice of a physician. After the consultation Sprang was declared the winner.

LCC does it again

By Mack McClure
Sports Editor

CHANUTE - No. 9 seems to be the catchword for the powerhouse Labette Community College wrestling program.

For the third straight season, Labette is taking nine wrestlers to the NJCAA national meet, which is set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24, at Rochester, Minn.

With six wrestlers capturing first-place finishes Saturday, the Cardinals captured the NJCAA West Central Zone team championship at the NCCC Gymnasium in Chanute, totaling 98.5 points. Northwest Wyoming was a distant second with 66.5 points and Western Wyoming finished third with 63.5 points.

"We had nine two years ago, nine last year and we'll definitely have nine this year," Labette head coach Joe Renfro said. "It has been consistent. We've been pretty good this year and we've been very successful and we're keeping it rolling.

"We're starting to peak a little bit, which is what you want."

The Cardinals, who won the NJCAA national championship two years ago, took home third place last season, with six LCC competitors establishing themselves as All-Americans.

This year's nine national qualifiers include Tim Elliott (125 pounds), Josh Baldridge (133), Marcus Bowman (141), Willy Pendleton (149), Mikey Morgan (165), Tommy McCarty (174), Eric Irvin (184), Elijah Martinez (197) and Willie Weber (Heavyweight).

Elliott, Baldridge, Pendleton, Morgan, McCarty and Martinez captured regional championships, while Weber took second, Bowman was third and Irvin finished fourth.

Holdovers from last year's LCC team that established themselves as All-Americans include Elliott, Baldridge, McCarty and Weber.

Martinez returns after not placing in the top 10 last year at nationals.

"We always think that we're going to win it," Renfro said of the national meet. "No matter what our duel record and no matter guys we have along, we think we're going to win a national title, and we're going to do whatever we have to do to do that."

Elliott says he had a bitter taste after taking fifth place at last year's national meet.

"I think I should have won it last year," Elliott said. "I'm kind of glad now that I didn't because I worked a lot harder this year to get where I am now."

Elliott wins national title

Elliott wins national title

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Tim Elliott, a rambuncious sort, had an unorthodox way of celebrating his 125-pound NJCAA national tournament wrestling championship victory Saturday night at the UCR Regional Sports Center

Labette Community's College Elliott, who pinned Ray Stephens of Chicago's Waubonsee College, greeted Cardinals head coach Joe Renfro with a left-right combination to the face.

That's right. Elliott punched his head coach in the face, and Renfro didn't mind.

"When he reached out to shake my hand, he got a left hook to the jaw," Elliott said. "I jumped up in the air and we hugged each other and I ran off the mat.

Elliott said Renfro made the comment before that the only time any of his wrestlers could punch him in the face without him getting upset is if they won a national title.

Elliott seized the opportunity.

"We talked about it all year," Renfro said. "It started out as a joke and he said, 'Coach, if I win it, can I punch you?' and I said, 'Yea, sure, whatever, you just go ahead and worry about winning.'

"By golly, he wasn't joking. He got some shots in. I can slip a mean dodge. I've unfortunately had quite a few get thrown my way over the years.

"It was kind of the heat of the moment and just an awesome thing. Then I gave him a hug and he broke a tear there. Tim did the best that he possibly could have done."

Besides winning the national crown, Elliott was also named as the recipient of the National Wrestling Coaches Association Juco Outstanding Wrestler Award at the national meet and received a plaque.

"Renfro knew I was going to get it before I did," Elliott said.

Back to Elliott's reaction after he triumphed.

"it was a pretty emotional deal. I had to get away from everybody because I was on the verge of crying. I held back my tears and shook everybody's hand.

Then Elliott was greeted by his dad, Jonathan Elliott, in the tunnel and the tears began to flow.

"My dad hugged me and he started crying and so I started crying," Tim Elliott said. "Any success that I have ever had with anything or school or staying out of trouble is because of my dad.

"If it weren't for my dad, I'd probably be in jail or not even alive. My dad's the reason why I'm a national champion today."
