I am looking for possible techniques for wrestlers of short stature that have to wrestle guys that are a foot taller.

Don't get too high when on top. Don't leg ride. Do a lot of shooting, but make sure they shoot really deep and finish their shot. This is a few things I've had to learn over the years. Cuz just about eveybody that I've ever had to wrestle has always been at least 8 inches taller than I. Hope this stuff helps.

Vertically challenged myself. 1) Ride legs, but only 'crab ride'. 2) Arm drag in, particluarly short arm drags to Russian 3) Attack above the elbow. 4) Treat it as a blessing, your hips are naturally lower for most takedowns. When on bottom, opponent is usually too high. When on top, you have greater maneuverability. 5) Absolutely learn how to finish from beneath opponent on takedowns. 6) Throws are fun, and build character for the 'throwee'.

Had a good wrestler a few years ago who was at least a foot shorter than most his good opponents. We worked on: 1. Forcing the taller wrestler to tie-up 2. Duck-unders and high-C's are a natural when you are already down to the guys's arm-pit 3. Japs on taller guys who "loom over" or "bull rush" 4. Short sit-out to Granby's work well because the taller top man gets too high

A couple of other thoughts.
1. Think Ali vs Frazier. Frazier had a HUGE reach disadvantage, so he concentrated on "wading in" and working in close.
2. The sweep single and low-level single in wrestling is the equivalent of a good long jab in boxing. Learn anticipate and counter those outside shots with a good hard sprawl.
3. Underhooks from the tie-up are very effective. Learn to underhook, and sweep the foot up to a single leg.

I disagree about the deep shot. Shoot doubles right above the knees and then cut the corner immediately. This prevents the apponent from reaching over for a waist tie-up or a crotch lift.

When I say shoot deep, I'm not meaning like a low level attack. I'm just saying shoot through the guy so that you don't have those long legs to mess with. But I competley agree with doubles and cuttin the corner imeditaly(sp) 100%.

ok, lets face it, hand control is a big part of wrestling and even bigger for someone that is shorter than their opponent. Get some kind of hand control no matter what position you are in and go through your techniques properly. I was a short wrestlers in high school but I rode the legs and it was because I would control the guys hands and waist. If you control the hands when on bottom it stops alot and allows you to do pretty much whatever you want.

Being roughly 6'3 I actually liked wresting shorter guys, because I felt I could do more with my height advantange since I at times only weighed 190 or less wrestling 215 in high school...I remember a tournament that I was in a pig tail and wound up 2nd....the tournament I was in I had guys well under 5'10 all the way until finals....in all of those matches I pinned my opponents in the fist stanza of the match by locking up...underhooking with my left arm and snapping them toward me, where I'd then lock my left hand up with my right hand while simultaneously doing a heel trip with my right leg causing them to fall into a "casual headlock" Now in the finals, I got my rear handed to me by an ACCHS kid but he was like 6'1...wasn't used to the size and came back to bite me in the butt.
