I spoke with Kirk Siminoff today about the coverage of the wrestling season. I had asked him if they were doing more preseason coverage of other teams and why the preseason rankings were not in todays paper. Kirk told me that the coverage that was in todays eagle was all that they would have for preseason. As fo the rankings, Kirk said that they would only post the rankings if all classes were available to post. With that said he stated that none would be posted in the paper until they recieve 5A,4A, 321A. I think it is time to start emailing the Eagle and putting in emphasis that we need just as much coverage as do the basket ball teams. I believe there was a total of 4-5 articles posted today. Good Luck to all wrestlers this season and hopefully the Eagle will start recognizing our sport.

"Kirk told me that the coverage that was in todays eagle was all that they would have for preseason."
If that was all then that is extremely WEAK.

Jim, You are right and I was told the same thing, I was also told by the other editors that there was going to be more, in addition they were also going to put more than what they did. Rankings were suppose to be in there today.

I sent them an email. I know it won't do much good but at least I got to vent a little. It's the same excuses every year. The problem is not just wrestling but every GWAL and local area sport other than football and basketball (where the coverage is at least average).

Does anyone know any of the email addresses for the papers outside wichita. I would be more than happy to send them the 6A rankings.

This topic came up last year and it became apperant that the eagle didnt give a great effort on the pre-season coverage but also the coaches didnt share alot of info. But to be fair early in the season its hard to tell whos going to be at what wieght and some coaches can be a little tight lipped for some reason. But also to be fair to the eagle thier coverage thru most of the season was pretty good and the coverage of state and reginals I thought was really good.

Why is so much of the responsibility on the coaches for getting info to the Eagle. Do the basketball coaches do all the work for the basketball preview? I doubt it. The Eagle doesn't make much of an effort to get any info from the wrestling coaches. I believe reporters are supposed to do research for articles too, I can't think of to many instances where all the information just falls in their laps and they just have to type it up.

When i was coaching high school it literally took me faxing all area papers for a couple hours after each meet, i also tried to get some interesting human interest stories and often wrote press releases to get coverage. It was necessary to get the coverage. You would think though that Wichita, Topeka and KC could provide some decent coverage though

Bob Phillips (webmaster for the KWCA forum) has a newspaper email list that he sends current rankings to every two weeks (he includes all classes). If you have an email address that you'd like to include in Bob's updates, send them to him at bphillips@holtonks.net.

Curtis, How many sports reporters do you think any newspaper has? Yes, coaches, including basketball, need to promote their sport!
I'm not sure of the individual problems that the Wichita paper has but in many locales, newspapers do not have the manpower to do a lot of research on their own. And when they do, they are going to primarily report on sports that sell ink. Or they cover sports that make it easy for them. Too often they rely on someone to provide them with info.
My local paper does a great job publishing the stories I write!
Are you making a POSITIVE difference in the life of kids?

My local paper does a great job publishing the stories I write! I can understand that. And our local paper actually does a great job of doing articles on the wrestling teams in the area. Now the Eagle is a completely different story. They do stories on basketball players and teams all season long. I don't know of to many stories like this done for wrestling though. And for instance the Eagle does an all city team for basketball players from Wichita and the surrounding areas. Why can't they do anything like this for wrestling though? That's what bothers me the most. It just seems to me like they don't really try to do much coverage for wrestling.

The Kansas City Kansan does an ALL KANSAN team for KCK high schools. They do a First Team, Second Team, and Honorable Mention for sports such as Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Track and maybe others...
Dont take this personal but I strongly disagree with anyone who say "well we have STATE to determine who is the best". So why do ranking and newspaper articles, wrestling magazines, and websites????
I think this attitude is maybe a large problem with the Kansas Wrestling community. We have to be more willing to do what ever it take to get more people exposed to the sport. Maybe some one picks up the daily newspaper expecting the read a bball story and instood they are talkin about area wrestlers and their accomplishments. Yes, the avg wrestling fan will know who the good wrestlers are, and yes state will determine who is the best. However, in order to expand our sport we cant live in a bubble.
Polls, Rankings, Newspaper articles, websites and the media in general are all very important to exposing our great sport to others.
If a tree falls in a forest and noone is around... do it make a sound???
Maybe if people knew Kansas had the second largest wrestling population her capita, we would have a D1 wrestling program. Maybe the media publishing the names us great kansas wrestlers who go on to great post high school careers more people would wonder why do Kansas wrestlers have to travel so far from home to compete one the highest college level.
Excuse the typos...
Its not over yet...

I agree with sportsfan02 on a lot of topics but in this case I agree with Curtis and Travius. In my opinion, the Eagle does a very mediocre job on all sports other than football and basketball. I don't buy the limited resources excuse, if they wanted to do more, they could and would.

The rankings are done prior to the state tournament and even at that are for the fun of the fans. They have no particular value or purpose other than that. If you will read what I wrote, I didn't mention any other type of press or exposure. Rather that a all city team is decided at the tournament, unlike other sports.

Not the type of team I'm talking about. True there is a city league tourney, but I mean all the areas surrounding Wichita. I think for football they call it an all metro team. Would include areas like Campus, Andover, Maize, Valley Center etc etc.

Do they do those type of "all metro" teams with track or cross country?
