Kansas Wrestling Coaches and KWCA Members:

In a continuing effort to improve the state of our sport, I would like to ask you to please take the time to consider the rules we currently follow and how they affect high school wrestling in the state of Kansas.

In the past, KWCA has appointed regional representatives who would take down ideas for rules recommendations and then forward those on to the KWCA board. At the state tournaments, coaches would then vote on which rule change proposals they supported and which ones they disagreed with.

We are attempting to simplify this process and make it more effective. Throughout the season, if you have any ideas or recommendations, there are several outlets through which you can voice your opinions:
• Email me at bovairob@usd437.net
• Post on the KWCA High School Coaches forum (available through our website or the http://www.usawks.com)
• Voice your concern at tournament seeding meetings

We will discuss these proposals throughout the season and take a final vote at each regional seeding meeting. These numbers will be forwarded on to the KCA for our recommendations to the KSHSAA. This will ensure that all coaches will vote on each issue.

You can also send your ideas to me through email at bovairob@usd437.net. Thank you for your time and consideration!

As always, I would be in favor of a 6 match limit instead of 5, or do not consider forfeits as matches. It would be one thing if a wrestler starts a match and gets hurt and cannot finish the match. That would be an injury default. But the next scheduled match involving that wrestler, who never reports to the mat, is a forfeit. No actual match is wrestled and therefore should not be counted as one of the 5 matches allowed in a day.

6 matches would be great...we could then run a 16 man bracket on a Saturday instead of Fri/Sat and save 1 point.

Kansas still follows the 5 match rule. I agree with Coach Naasz, 6 matches in a day could save a point with just a Sat. Tourn. Kids Club wrestlers can wrestle more than 5 and not be affected. Why not High School as well?

One thing to think about, is that many times in a 2 day tournament a kid may only wrestle 3 matches if they get a bye, unfortunately there are 4 points taken from them. I would like to see this changed as it punishes a kid and doesn't seem to fall within the intent of the rule. Of course if wrestling 4 or more matches in those 2 days I understand the need for the 4 points.

The biggest change in my opinion is the need for another weight class between 215 and 285. That is a 70 pounds gap. The should put a 235 or 240 weight class in there somewhere.

I would like to see a push out rule to keep guys more centered in the middle...push outs like fs/greco must have the pushed out opponent on feet to garner the point. I think it would help more in the motion department and keep matches going.

i dont really see a need for a weight class between 215 and 285. i know thats a big gap, but i've seen plenty of very successful heavyweights who only weigh around 240.

the push out rule would be ok. but isnt that something that would have to be done on a national level?

I've seen alot of good small heavyweights get thrown around just because they are smaller. If you have 2 or 3 guys at 285 that could be state placers it is unfair to them if one weighs 275, another weight 240. That is 35 pounds that big guy has to loose to get down to 215 to make varsity. How can you put the weight so close together for the lil guys but so far apart for the bigger guys. If they are goign to keep the weight at 285 they need to make another weight class

You are using an example of 240 vs. 275, but where it is really even more significant is a 220 vs. a 260 plus wrestler. My son has been in that situation several times this year and it is pretty tough for him. He has had success but when he meets up with a skilled athletic wrestler that size like Zlatnick and Hybsha it gets very rugged. I think there should be a couple of more weight classes for kids over 171. We would get more football players participating. I saw where it was stated that they increased 275 to 285 to get more participation from heavier wrestlers. Adding this 235 class would be more effective in increasing participation of heavier wrestlers than increasing 275 to 285.
