If the top 10 Team Standings (up to medal rounds) refer to the underclassman only, the breakdown of entries are:

NY-222
OH-150
NJ-135
PA-130
CA-52
UT-37
DE-31
MO-17
KS-8

Wait...why is it "illegal" Not under the elbow? I was going to say the official is out of place is what I see wrong with the photo...he should be on his belly counting shoulder points.

What a day! The action from the first day of the Senior division of this tourney is winding down. I can report that we have a few surprises on both sides of the ledger.

First, a listing of a few states and their number of entries. NY - 51, CA - 50, NJ - 44, NC - 41, OH - 41, PA - 34, KS - 31, MI - 31, MN - 30, VA - 29. A few others to note, MO - 16, OK - 11, NE - 3, CO - 19, IA - 12.

Today's format was all front side matches! Still alive and advancing are KC Turner's, Paulie Hansen at 119-pounds. He had a dramatic comeback victory and was 1-0 on the day.

At 135-pounds, Marysville's Jamie Hosfelt had a great day, going 2-0 for the day.

Clay Center phenom, Kyle Allen, is on the front side. Kyle's record for the day was 2-0.

Our last front sider is Jud Schroeder of Andale. His second match of the day was an overtime victory. He was 2-0.

We had our share of heart-breakers too! Tyler Williamson made a great comeback but lost in overtime.

Brett Bahe looked to have his second win in the bag. We was ahead with 0.06 seconds left and was taken down by his opponent.

Aaron Ely was tied at 8, late in his second round match and lost with a late takedown.

With a late flurry, Jason Pyle tied has match, sending it to overtime. In the 6th period he gave up a takedown.

Winning one match and losing one were John Hagan, Josh Hinman, Joe Schridde, Brett Swoyer, and Brady Esterl.

Losing their first match of the day, were Ryan Canale, Tyler Williamson, Dustin Dooley, Bryant Petty, Matt Migchelbrink, Wyatt Bechtel, Adam Almaguer, Patrick Mosley, Aaron Hynick, Mark Millstead, Jordan Gienger, Aaron Berscheidt, Jared Brown, Michael Baker, Ben Evans, Michael Malay, Jed Mamie, Jacup Richey, and Brennon Wilger.

At these National level tournaments you see a very high caliber of wrestlers. Sometimes, we might have what we feel is a real stud but that stud gets humbled! But at this point, EVERYONE is still alive!

Randy,

Thanks for the update. Tell the boys to lace the shoes up tight. I see some could have 8 or 9 matches on the backside.

Here is the link to the Senior brackets. With team scores.

Kansas is trailing several neighboring states who have substantially less entries. Of course I'm planning on the boys making hay on the back side!

Tonight was the medal rounds for the Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Divisions of the NHSCA National Wrestling Tourney.

The bad news is, we didn't win a match. The good news is, we crowned 5 All-Americans!!

Tyler Stokes from Gardner-Edgerton HS, in the sophomore silver medalist.

Aldon Isenberg the junior from Gardner-Edgerton also was awarded the silver.

Romero Cotton, lost his match in much the same way we lost two days ago. This time it was on an illegal slam. Perhaps the slam call was questionable but it came within a few seconds of Romero being warned for using the same arm series that dq'd win the other day. Romero Cotton, the junior from Hutchinson takes 4th place.

Scott Elliott, a junior from Andale, lost his match, I believe it was 12-13. Scott takes the silver.

Finally, it was Atticus Disney of Andover Central losing his match to Elijah Madison in the sudden victory round of overtime. The score was 2-3. Atticus wins the silver.

I will give you a few of my thoughts on this tourney.

This is my first visit to Virginia Beach and any NHSCA event. A lot of credit must go the the Elvin's and to Gary Ulmer. The Elvin's have been the organizer of the Senior event for several years. That level of commitment, their organizational skills, and their experience truly adds to the TEAM feeling amongst those on this trip.

This is the first year for the underclassmen in this tourney. From my perspective, except for a few administrative issues, it has worked.

This tournament should be toward the top of your list if you are a competitive wrestler who wants to challenge themselves. Perhaps there will be a few underclassman who don't belong here but they are few and far between. The quality of wrestling is top notch for folk-stylers!

Getting ready for another day of wrestling ... what could be finer? Actually honoring a few All-Americans would be nice!

I'll have a report later.
